Objective: to understand the repercussions of the fetus malformation diagnosis in the life of pregnant women, under the light of Betty Neuman’s theory. Methods: qualitative study, based on Betty Neuman’s theory. The semistructured interview included ten women pregnant with malformed fetuses hospitalized in a maternity hospital specialized in fetal risk. The thematic analysis technique was used, respecting all ethical aspects. Results: the way in which the malformation is communicated, the lack of empathy from professionals, the lack of information, being alone, fearing judgment, and feeling guilty led to emotional alterations and changes in the projects of the pregnant women. The family, specialized care, and religiosity contributed for the balance of the participants. Conclusion: Neuman’s theory allowed us to recognize stressing factors that shook the lines of defense of the pregnant women, leading to fragilities which are overcome by specialized care and by a support network.

Objective: to understand the use of time by nurse managers in psychiatry and mental health units, as they carry out their daily tasks. Methods: cross-sectional study, carried out by 48 managers from public psychiatric units and from the social sector. Data collection was made through an online questionnaire that is part of the Scale of Perception of Nurse Manager Work, including 43 items separated in five functional domains of nurse managers. The responses were in a Likert scale: does not take time, takes little time, takes some time, takes much time. Results: the activities inherent to ethical and legal professional practices and to the management of care and of human resources required more time from the manager when compared to policy interventions, and consulting and professional development. Conclusion: the managers recognize that managing time implies organization, planning work, and establishing priorities in the tasks to be developed.

In late 2019, the first cases of a disease, which would come to be known as COVID-19, emerged in a Chinese city, known for being the home to a market where wild animals were relatively common and to a virology laboratory of the highest security level. Coincidence or not, the debate about the origin of the disease involves these two places, and a lot of political interest. On the other hand, the tragedy that became one of the deadliest pandemics ever recorded has several other elements that are more or less important, depending on the moment and context.

Objective: to build a nursing care instrument for patients with short-term central venous catheters in an Intensive Care Unit. Methods: a multi-method study in three stages: structuring of the instrument; pre-testing of the instrument; agreement analyses among nurses and final composition of the instrument. Results: the instrument, in its first version, presented three domains related to the moment of insertion (five items), maintenance (15 items) and catheter removal (ten items). Most of the 30 items were assessed as relevant (23/77%) and presented a satisfactory Content Validity Index (28/93%). Ten items were reformulated, 32 new items were included, and three items were deleted. Conclusion: the instrument was constructed, which presented response validity for the care of nurses to patients with central venous catheters in Intensive Care Units, consisting of three domains and 59 items evaluated by nurses and considered appropriate for the moments of insertion, maintenance and removal of the catheter.

Objective: to describe the experiences of pregnant women at advanced maternal age assisted in a private hospital. Methods: a qualitative study, carried out with 17 women, by means of semi-structured interviews via telephone. The data was submitted to Thematic Content Analysis. Results: the participants were between 35 and 40 years old. Two categories emerged: Experiencing pregnancy as a couple and family: the preparation of the couple for pregnancy and childbirth (Pregnancy after 35 years old as an element of potentiality; Change in the family routine for the baby’s arrival) and Experiencing pregnancy and its changes: perceiving pregnancy as a healthy and calm experience (Change in emotional patterns related to the pregnancy process). Conclusion: experiencing pregnancy late in life was not a concern for women. Maturity and favorable socioeconomic conditions may have a protective influence on the course of healthy pregnancies in women attending the private health service.

Objective: to assess therapeutic itinerary of patients with chronic low-back pain. Methods: qualitative study involving the use of an in-depth semi structured interviews were used to collect data on therapeutic itinerary among ten patients with chronic low-back pain who from physiotherapy clinic of a tertiary hospital. Data was analysed using thematic content analysis. Results: emerging themes were as follows: onset of low-back pain, symptoms that initiated the journey for care, steps taken to find pain relief, respondent’s perception on care received, interference of chronic low-back pain with normal life, family and relations, multiple practices in which chronic low-back pain patients are involved, perception of effectiveness of the multiple practices, and hurdles to seeking care. Conclusion: patients with chronic low-back pain take different routes in search of care. Chronic low-back pain markedly altered patients’ life and made them prone to practicing medical pluralism.

Objective: to understand Family Health Strategy nurses’ perceptions on counseling and rapid testing for sexually transmitted infections. Methods: this is a qualitative study, with data triangulation. Data collection was conducted through a semi-structured interview with seven nurses from Family Health Strategy. For systematization and data processing, content analysis was adopted in the thematic modality. Results: after analysis, four categories emerged: Rapid test training; Counseling conduction; Ease in rapid testing offer; and Challenges offering rapid testing. Conclusion: nurses’ perceptions were related to difficulties in the face of pre and posttest counseling, requiring improvement, permanent education and training for professional preparation, and the logistics of inputs and materials, in addition to changes in the physical structure of the units.

Objective: to assess the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: a cross-sectional study carried out in the chemotherapy sector with 51 patients able to answer the data collection instruments. For the analyses, we adopted the variance analysis and Student’s t. Results: the health score indicated moderate quality of life and the symptoms nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and dyspnea were the most present. The scores of the global health scale showed differences between age groups and presence of metastasis; diarrhea and financial difficulties showed differences with respect to gender; pain was more cited by those who did not undergo surgery; insomnia and nausea and vomiting were related to the time of treatment. Conclusion: participants had moderate overall health scores and the main functional levels affected by the treatment were social and emotional.

Objective: to understand the access to the care network for children and adolescents with special needs from the perspective of professionals. Methods: qualitative study carried out in an Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children. The semi-structured interview was used, with representation through the cloud of words. Participated in the research 11 professionals who work in health care and special education. Results: from the professionals’ perspective, the access to the network of care for children and adolescents comes from the special care and education offered by the Association. The participants highlighted the difficulties of access of children and adolescents to health services and the diversity of activities used so that they can socialize, interact, and form bonds. Conclusion: the access of children and adolescents to the attention network occurs through the services of the Association, represented by the clinic for health care and the school for development and social inclusion.

Objective: to compare physical activity and sedentary behavior in university students and secondary students. Methods: the cross-sectional study involved 202 selected secondary students and 171 university students. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was administered to the respondents. Percentages, chi-square test, Mann Whitney U test and linear regression were used for data analysis. Results: about 63% and 32% of secondary and university students, respectively, reported high levels of physical activity, while 84.7% and 71.9% of secondary and undergraduate students, respectively, met guidelines for sedentary behavior. The secondary students had significantly higher scores than the university students in vigorous (p=0.004), moderate (p<0.001), and total physical activity (p<0.001). The observed difference was more prominent among females. Conclusion: secondary students had higher scores of physical activity and spent less time in sedentary behavior.
