MENTAL HEALTH STATUS AND THIRD PLACES USE AMONG RURAL WORKING-AGE ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES. 美国农村劳动年龄成年人的心理健康状况和第三位用药情况。

There is increasing urgency to address mental health needs, particularly through social determinants of health and modifiable lifestyle factors. Although third place use, going to public places outside of work or home, is a lifestyle behaviour that influences social health and feelings of belonging, little is known about if third place use is associated with mental health, particularly among rural working-aged adults who face increased risk for poor mental health outcomes, including suicide. This article presents data analysed from a representative sample of 1,135 rural adults ages 18 to 64 to determine whether mental health was associated with various levels of third place use. Results suggest that both going to third places and engaging with others are associated with better mental health among rural working-aged adults. Findings inform the growing body of literature on third places as social determinants of health and third place use as a modifiable lifestyle factor.

ABSTRACTResearch on criminal justice in rural areas is historically infrequent in the United States, and even though it has become more frequent recently, there has been even less work focused on rural juvenile justice. The purpose of this article is to compare juvenile probation practices in rural counties to those in suburban and/or urban counties. Overall, the implementation of programmes and policies is primarily based on the needs of larger counties. This article presents findings from 16 in-depth interviews with juvenile probation officers throughout Pennsylvania. Various struggles were identified by probation officers in smaller counties, such as travel time to facilities and limited resources. In contrast, many probation officers in larger counties discussed the additional resources they have been able to offer to juveniles. ABSTRACTThis research focuses on the socio-ecological context of small farmers in the Mediterranean dryland region of south-central Chile or Secano Interior. This area has been characterised by a long history of natural resource exploitation, especially soil and native vegetation, and the arrival and rapid expansion of monoculture forest plantations resulting in serious environmental degradation issues. Using a mixed methods approach including social network surveys, semi-structured interviews, and geospatial data, this article compares social capital indicators and socio-ecological interactions for rural households with different levels of encroachment due to forest plantations. The research objective is to contrast diverse socio-environmental scenarios with different levels of dispersion and proximity to forest plantations.
