ABSTRACTAbout 60 million Americans live in rural areas of the United States. These Americans have a lower life expectancy than their urban counterparts. There are many factors contributing to poorer health outcomes in rural America and one significant factor is limited access to healthcare. Telehealth is increasingly recognized as a solution for supporting rural access to healthcare. While many studies explore effective telehealth strategies, there are fewer studies that focus on telehealth application strategies and telehealth provider competencies specifically needed to support rural patients. This article aims to begin filling these gaps, examining best practices in rural telehealth application and provider competencies that are critical for effective rural patient care. Findings hold implications for faculty, medical professionals, and patients. Finally, the article identifies and consolidates five ideal telehealth application strategies and five telehealth provider competencies to support effective telehealth care in rural settings.KEYWORDS: Telemedicinehealthcareinequalityrural healthtechnology Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).

ABSTRACT Water-energy-food nexus insecurity emanates from inadequate access to natural and productive resources to promote the security and resilience of rural households. The goal of achieving WEF nexus security has thus far focused on individual sectors, with few positive results, especially for rural communities. WEF nexus theory integrates resource use and management and promotes understanding how these interact, including at the household level. This can promote household security and resilience as a result of coping with, and adapting to, perceived ongoing challenges. Using case study methodology and qualitative methods, this article focuses on the WEF nexus security and coping strategies used in rural households in Africa. Challenges to WEF nexus security are presented. It is argued the coping strategies of rural households can be directly linked to interactions among WEF resources. The article concludes the WEF nexus theory is ideal for forming an understanding household security and resilience related to food, energy, and water.

ABSTRACT Language Tourism Villages have the potential to be developed in areas of cultural diversity, ecotourism activities, and the creative economy. Local wisdom and cultural events can enhance the creativity of a community and give economic value to rural communities. This research aims to describe how the synergy between ecotourism and the creative economy improves social quality. The data collection techniques used are interviews, observation, and focus group discussions. Data analysis uses an interactive model which includes the stages of data reduction, presentation, and conclusions. Results show that in the process of empowerment of a poor (powerless) community to become an independent community, based on ecotourism and the creative economy, the community becomes highly strategic in finding social quality when its activities start to move from those of a powerless community to an independent community.

ABSTRACT The online press is a platform that helps to communicate the advantages of rural schools and to highlight the needs and grievances of the educational community. The aim of this article is to analyse the treatment of information about rural schools in 100 articles (2020–2021) published in the online Spanish press. A mixed methodology was employed to combine qualitative documentary analysis (source, approach, topic and the emotions and/or feelings expressed) and quantitative statistical analysis. Predominantly, the articles give a voice to the educational community, revealing the image of rural schools presented is positive. The Spanish press highlights rural schools’ advantages, as well as demand more support for the institutional representatives in order to guarantee the existence of rural schools. Overall, findings contribute to global research investigating the role of the online press related to rural schools and education.

ABSTRACT Within cultural tourism, creative tourism is gaining popularity in international and domestic tourism. Primary research in creative tourism, however, especially from the point of view of consumers, is still in its infancy. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore a niche market in creative tourism. Specifically, the demand for handicraft, and creative motivation, is researched using a quantitative consumer behaviour survey of 252 respondents carried out in Hungary in April and May, 2021. The survey examined the awareness and image of handicraft activities and workshops, as well as consumer behaviour related to these activities. Results contribute to deepening the knowledge of the market segment of creative tourism and, through this, new aspects are added to further studying and understanding rural development.

ABSTRACT Using qualitative research methods, this article assesses stakeholders’ perspectives and views on implementing sustainability and development in a municipality in the Philippines. Specifically focusing on Cultural Heritage Conservation and Tourism, the research conducted a virtual focus group discussion with primary and secondary stakeholders, guided by semi-structured aide-memoires and content analysis of documents. Prioritising multi-stakeholder collaboration and coordination in conceptualising, implementing, and monitoring programmes and projects for tourism development and heritage conservation, findings show that in developing projects and programmes, the community's heritage significance is a useful framework and put forth a conceptual model, a San Nicoleño Sustainable Cultural and Heritage Tourism Development Framework, using the municipality as a case study.

ABSTRACT This article investigates what predicts forest-clearing behaviour in Nigeria. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire among 320 randomly selected crop farmers in Afijio, Oyo state, in southwestern Nigeria. Stepwise, multiple linear regression was used to identify the predictors of forest-clearing behaviour. Six variables, derived from a health belief model, determined the prediction of forest-clearing. Results indicate that “perceived barriers’ was the best predictor. “Cues to action”, “perceived benefit” and “perceived severity” were also good predictors of forest-clearing behaviour. The four constructs correlated with behaviour and explained 20.2% of the variance. Robust perception of barriers to conserving forests and perceived benefit derivable from such conservation aggravates forest degradation. In contrast, the intensity of cues that stimulate forest conservation and the severity of peoples’ perception regarding the severity of forest clearing, alleviates forest-clearing. Thus, pursuing forest conservation while invoking these variables is promising for reducing forest-clearing in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT This article explores why volunteers are motivated to make significant social contributions, either informally through personal interactions, or formally within rural healthcare organisations. Volunteerism is a form of civic engagement includes a variety of service, collective action, political involvement, and social change efforts by citizens to improve conditions for others or work towards shaping the civic sphere. The latest Federal Government Indicators show a 2% decline in formal volunteering rates. Thus, the implications for rural communities are problematic. Using the Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI), we surveyed volunteers at a rural voluntary organisation and found trends for volunteer types, based on demographic factors and volunteer motivations. A key finding was that altruistic motivations were the strongest motivator for these rural Wide Bay–Burnett Queensland volunteers.

A key finding was that altruistic motivations were the strongest motivator for these rural Wide Bay–Burnett Queensland volunteers.","PeriodicalId":45685,"journal":{"name":"Rural Society","volume":"32 1","pages":"1 - 14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46196628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ABSTRACT Drawing on results from online surveys of the mobility of people who grew up in Missouri (2021) and Nebraska (2019), this article situates itself among emerging research on immobile rural populations. By using an immobility prospective, this research draws attention to the most influential factors in an individual’s active, intended, and deliberate decision to stay in two of the most rural regions of the United States: the Missouri Ozarks and the Nebraska Sandhills. The findings of both the Missouri and Nebraska Roots Migration Surveys suggest that deep familial roots and a sense of rurality among those who grow up in rural America bond individuals with their home places and influence their residential decision-making.
