Sustainable communal septic tank systems in informal settlements: The case of Lebak Siliwangi, Indonesia 非正式住区的可持续公共化粪池系统:印度尼西亚Lebak Siliwangi的案例

This study focused on realizing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 for inclusive clean water and sanitation; in particular Target 6.3, which aims to reduce untreated wastewater by 2030 while promoting circular wastewater reuse and recycling globally. The main objective was to assess the adequacy and efficiency of communal septic tank systems in informal settlements while helping local planners and authorities in their decision-making regarding Target 6.3. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed with secondary data from previous researchers, and primary data were collected from field surveys, observations, and interviews with members of the local community. The research was delimited to two village administrative divisions known as Rukun Warga (Village Administrative Division, RW): RW 7 and RW 8 of Lebak Siliwangi Kampung in Coblong District, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The findings were also compared with situations in other informal settlements in Brazil, Bangladesh, and Nairobi. The results indicated the inadequacy of communal septic tanks in informal settlements due to factors such as substandard system design, limited support and communication between authorities and residents, and the gap between septic tank availability and capacity vis-a-vis demand. Other limiting factors included limited land availability and irregular geomorphology, the latter of which affected the siting and operation of septic tanks due a lack of room for upgrades or expansion in response to continuous population growth. These findings illustrate the need to complement communal septic systems with flexible centralized or decentralized systems to achieve Target 6.3 of SDG 6.

Design of a sustainable development path in Chenzhou based on a knowledge graph 基于知识图谱的郴州市可持续发展路径设计

Sustainable urban development involves many fields with complex data types and rich semantic relationships, such as the economic, societal, and ecological fields. Knowledge graphs provide a new means for sustainable urban development research by leveraging their strengths in the construction of knowledge networks and display of knowledge associations. Focusing on Chenzhou, a resource-based city serving as a China’s Innovation Demonstration Zone for Sustainable Development Agenda, this study adopted a top-down approach, applying the “seven-step” and “skeleton” methods to construct an ontology for sustainable urban development through manual editing. A knowledge graph was constructed for Chenzhou’s sustainable development, comprising 515 nodes, 3 209 relations, and 28 157 attributes. Sustainable measures and pathways were proposed based on this knowledge graph. The results showed that Chenzhou’s future sustainable development should focus on innovation, growth, emissions reduction, centering around high-quality and sustainable development. Promoting the transfer and transformation of scientific and technological achievements, accelerating the optimization and upgrading of industrial structures, and enhancing talent cultivation and recruitment will foster new quality productive forces, providing strong momentum and support for the high-quality and sustainable development of Chenzhou. To accelerate the green economy transition, Chenzhou should improve the market-oriented allocation system for resources and environmental factors, explore the “gross ecosystem product + eco-environment-oriented development” project implementation model, encourage enterprises to adopt environmental, social, and governance principles, and foster synergies between supply and demand. Furthermore, coordinating Chenzhou’s low-carbon city pilot projects and constructing carbon sequestration pathways that leverage nature-based solutions will help implement the “dual carbon” actions and enhance the city’s ability to respond to climate change.

Spatial network characteristics and drivers of carbon emission reduction capability in urban agglomerations: A case study of Shandong Province 城市群碳减排能力空间网络特征及驱动因素——以山东省为例

Synergistic carbon emission reduction at the urban scale is an inherent requirement for China to realize its carbon emission reduction commitments and promote sustainable and regional synergistic development. Using 16 prefectural cities in Shandong Province as an example, this study defines and quantifies the regional carbon emission reduction capacity (CERC) based on the synergistic development of carbon emission reduction, environmental protection, and economic growth objectives. The spatial network characteristics of the (CERC) and its drivers were analyzed using social network analysis and quadratic assignment procedure regression methods. The results revealed that the spatial correlation of the CERC among prefectural cities has been increasing over the years. Jinan-Zibo-Qingdao is the center of the network, while the spatial linkage strength in the southwest and northeast of Shandong Province is weak. Geospatial distance and scientific development differences have a significant negative effect on the intensity of spatial association, while differences in economic and informatization developments have a considerable positive impact. Environmental regulatory differences and transportation differences are not significant. This study offers a methodological reference for similar studies in other countries or regions. At the same time, the findings provide a scientific basis for the government to rationally allocate urban resources and promote regional synergistic carbon emission reduction.

Digital intelligence and synergy of pollution reduction and carbon reduction: “Dividend” or “gap”? 数字智能与减污减碳协同:“红利”还是“缺口”?

At the intersection of the “dual carbon” goal and the era of digital intelligence (DI), exploring the synergy between pollution and carbon reduction (SPCR) within the context of DI is important for promoting a comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development. This study, based on urban panel data from 281 prefecture-level cities in Mainland China from 2010 to 2020, developed a DI indicator system for these cities and employed a double machine learning algorithm for the first time to investigate the intrinsic mechanisms and incentivizing effects of DI on SPCR. The results showed that: ① DI significantly promotes SPCR. ② Mechanism tests demonstrated that DI can indirectly enhance SPCR by optimizing resource allocation and reinforcing government interventions. ③ Further analysis showed that the impact of DI on SPCR was more substantial in regions with lower levels of economic and environmental competition. Moreover, the SPCR driven by DI exhibited heterogeneity, characterized by stronger effects in “resource-based cities > non-resource-based cities” and “non-capital economic zones > capital economic zones”. The conclusions of this study hold significant implications for fully harnessing the synergy between digitization and intelligence to empower SPCR. In addition, the findings are valuable for the government’s integrated promotion of the “dual carbon” goal and the “digital China” strategy.

Is there a peer effect on corporate ESG performance? Evidence from China’s capital market 企业ESG绩效是否存在同侪效应?来自中国资本市场的证据

Corporate ESG performance is an important way for stakeholders to understand the corporate environment, social responsibility, and governance behavior. Under China’s implementation of the “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” dual carbon strategic background, ESG has become an important tool to promote the achievement of the “dual carbon” goals and high-quality development. How enterprises can reasonably and effectively improve their ESG performance and promote their green and sustainable development has become a major practical problem that urgently needs to be solved. Based on social learning and dynamic competition theories, this study takes Shanghai-Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2021 as research samples, empirically tests whether there is a peer effect in the ESG performance of listed companies in China, and examines the generation mechanism and influencing factors of the peer effect in the ESG performance of enterprises. The results show that: (i) There is an industry and regional peer effect on the ESG performance of enterprises, where the average ESG performance of other enterprises in the same industry and region, except for the focus enterprise, significantly affects the ESG performance of the focus enterprise.This core conclusion still holds true after robustness tests such as instrumental variable method, propensity score matching method, and first-order difference method to eliminate endogeneity issues, replace key measurement indicators, and control for macro factors. (ii) The mechanism analysis results show that the “information learning” and “competitive pressure” mechanisms promote the peer effect of ESG performance. (iii) Further research has found that institutional investors’ attention and government environmental regulations positively and significantly impact the peer effect of corporate ESG performance. (iv) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the ESG performance peer effect is more significant for large-scale, eastern, and state-owned enterprises than for small-scale, central, western, and non-state-owned enterprises. This study expands the boundaries of current ESG theory and empirical research, and the conclusions provide important policy implications for governments and enterprises.

Under China’s implementation of the “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” dual carbon strategic background, ESG has become an important tool to promote the achievement of the “dual carbon” goals and high-quality development. How enterprises can reasonably and effectively improve their ESG performance and promote their green and sustainable development has become a major practical problem that urgently needs to be solved. Based on social learning and dynamic competition theories, this study takes Shanghai-Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2021 as research samples, empirically tests whether there is a peer effect in the ESG performance of listed companies in China, and examines the generation mechanism and influencing factors of the peer effect in the ESG performance of enterprises. The results show that: (i) There is an industry and regional peer effect on the ESG performance of enterprises, where the average ESG performance of other enterprises in the same industry and region, except for the focus enterprise, significantly affects the ESG performance of the focus enterprise.This core conclusion still holds true after robustness tests such as instrumental variable method, propensity score matching method, and first-order difference method to eliminate endogeneity issues, replace key measurement indicators, and control for macro factors. (ii) The mechanism analysis results show that the “information learning” and “competitive pressure” mechanisms promote the peer effect of ESG performance. (iii) Further research has found that institutional investors’ attention and government environmental regulations positively and significantly impact the peer effect of corporate ESG performance. (iv) Heterogeneity analysis shows that the ESG performance peer effect is more significant for large-scale, eastern, and state-owned enterprises than for small-scale, central, western, and non-state-owned enterprises. The increasing demand for green spaces in cities underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions to reduce the ecological impact of urban areas. This research focuses on converting unused rooftops into extensive green roofs in Nador, Morocco, offering an innovative approach to enhancing outdoor thermal comfort in this region. Several advanced techniques were used, including photogrammetric restitution (for creating land use maps), integration of light detection and ranging data (for three-dimensional urban modeling), and meteorological data collection (for modeling urban climate conditions). The urban-multiscale-environmental-predictor solar and longwave environmental irradiance geometry (UMEP-SOLWEIG) model was crucial for precisely evaluating the thermal performance of green roofs and their influence on urban microclimates. This model considers considered various parameters, such as the sky view factor, wall height and aspect, and shading conditions, for accurate, comprehensive analysis. Additionally, for accurate, comprehensive analysis, a comparative evaluation was performed between the UMEP-SOLWEIG and ENVI-met models to assess the UMEP-SOLWEIG results. The findings were notable, demonstrating a substantial reduction (averaging over 3 °C) in the mean radiant temperature on 60% of rooftops, covering 55% of the total surface area. This highlighted the effectiveness of green roofs in improving outdoor thermal comfort. Furthermore, green roofs were closely associated with reductions in air-conditioning energy consumption, with considerable reductions ranging from 17.53% to 43.82%. These savings translated to estimated financial benefits ranging from USD 1.63–4.07 million. These figures clearly verified the notable economic impact of green roofs despite their initially high costs (approximately USD 84.44 million). These potential long-term savings indicated that these investments are financially viable in the long run. The collected data were used to create thermal maps of the area using geographic-information-system tools. A thermal cadaster specific to green roofs was also developed, accessible online through Web mapping. Overall, this approach facilitates decision-making in urban planning by providing visual information on thermal variations, thereby aiding in the precise planning of measures against urban heat and promoting the use of green roofs to reduce environmental impact.

Understanding carbon footprint: An evaluation criterion for achieving sustainable development 了解碳足迹:实现可持续发展的评价标准

Excessive greenhouse gas emissions lead to global warming, which poses a critical challenge for human society. Worldwide consensus that carbon emissions must be reduced to achieve sustainable development has raised research interest on the topic of carbon footprint, an assessment standard for measuring greenhouse gas emissions. To shed light on this important topic, we introduce carbon footprint-related international standards and domestic policies, and conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of the current carbon footprint literature. Specifically, through a bibliometric analysis of 13 203 carbon footprint publications circulated over the past decade, we quantify the publication volume, influence, and collaboration networks of countries/regions, institutions, and journals. The results show that publications on carbon footprint have been increasing since 2013, and more so after 2017. Regarding domain influence, China and its academic institutions show a strong influence. In addition, a cluster analysis of the keywords of all publications shows seven categories, encompassing carbon footprint accounting methods and research priorities. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis of the research methods and subjects related to carbon footprint reveals the need to increase communication and collaboration among different disciplines and countries/regions to strengthen the construction of carbon footprint systems. Accordingly, this study identifies popular topics and development trends in the carbon footprint literature to provide research direction for promoting green and low-carbon transformation of the social economy to achieve sustainable development.

National dietary guidelines serve as a strategic tool to facilitate dietary adjustments, improve human nutrition, and reduce environmental strain by guiding individuals toward healthier dietary choices. This study examines the evolution of Chinese Dietary Guidelines (CDG) and compares them with Chinese residents’ current dietary structure. The effects of the CDG on nutrition, the environment, and cost were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the gap between Chinese residents’ dietary structure and the CDG predominantly manifests as a severe deficiency in dairy consumption. The nutrients currently recommended in the CDG cannot meet the needs of the human body and have significant environmental impacts. In terms of cost, rural residents’ incomes may not be sufficient to fully adhere to CDG recommendations. We propose that future updates to the CDG should address issues related to inadequate nutrition and significant environmental impacts. Simultaneously, the government should prioritize facilitating access to the nutritionally adequate food recommended in the CDG for low-income groups.

Social Network Theory and methods have emerged as pivotal tools for dissecting intricate interdisciplinary issues in rural communities. This study aims to systematically delineate the application characteristics and trends of Social Network Analysis (SNA) in rural community research. Using a twofold approach, we integrate a traditional literature review and CiteSpace bibliometric analysis to assess the application status and evolutionary trends of SNA methods in this context. The key findings include the following: ① Chinese research trends: scholars predominantly concentrate on the “three rural” issues (related to agriculture, rural areas, and small-scale farmers) and social support mechanisms for vulnerable rural populations. With policy shifts, rural revitalization, tourism, governance, social trust, and multi-dimensional poverty are poised to emerge as hot topics for the future. For further refinement, we suggest that the application of SNA in rural community research could benefit from content expansion, long-term studies, and innovative modelling techniques. ② Research by international scholars has been primarily directed toward the physical and mental health of rural residents, as well as socioeconomic issues. Despite these studies covering a range of typical cases across various nations, a conspicuous lack of thorough, systematic, and prolonged efforts focused on rural community development in specific regions remains. Additionally, health issues affecting rural residents are expected to sustain long-standing and focused international academic attention. This study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the current applications and potential future directions of SNA in rural community studies, both in China and internationally.

As China continues to develop its ecological civilization, it is crucial to quantitatively assess the ecological value to understand its potential impact on regional sustainable development. While previous studies have highlighted the importance of ecological value, they have not fully reflected the value of ecological restoration work or considered social costs and benefits, lacking a people-centered approach. Hence, this study analyzes the essence of ecological value from the perspective of sustainable development. By studying emblematic ecological restoration areas such as the Saihanba Mechanized Forest Farm in Chengde City, it aims to identify the significance of ecological restoration efforts in enhancing regional sustainable development capacity. The results underscore the necessity of comprehensively considering the value chain from ecological construction to ecological output, highlighting the value of ecological restoration in the ecological construction process as well as the well-being of people in the ecological output process. This approach assigns more economic and humanistic attributes to ecological value, thereby better serving the development of ecological restoration areas.
