Finally, he looks (in chapter 6) at how Pico interprets the influence of the sun and the moon over the earth and argues that this is a development of the concerns already expressed before in the Heptaplus and the Expositiones, which seek resolution within the framework of natural philosophy. The book’s last section is devoted to the pro and contra reception of the Disputationes among Pico’s contemporaries. A study of the works of Savonarola (chapter 7) and Gianfrancesco Pico (chapter 8) allows Akopyan to establish that they have substantive differences with Pico’s position and that there is also evidence that they were influenced by theDisputationes, not vice versa. On the other hand, an analysis of the works of Lucio Bellanti, Giovani Pontano, and Francesco Zorzi (chapters 10, 11, and 12) serves to contrast Pico’s ideas and to broaden our view of the debate over astrology at the time, but also to identify in detail the context in which the arguments that question the authorship of the Disputationes arise. Debating the Stars undoubtedly opens a new horizon to understanding Pico’s Disputationes as a part of his greater intellectual enterprise. It opens further questions on how his ideas evolved and his philosophical relation to Savonarola and Gianfrancesco. As Akopyan suggests, Pico was a leading philosopher, not a mere follower of Savonarola’s ideas.

As for Arminian views on predestination, in chapter 5 Raamsdonk argues that for Milton, the story of Samson, an elected individual who appears to lose and regain divine grace, provided a problematic case for Calvinism and therefore an opportunity to express, in Samson Agonistes, his “agreement with three Arminian points (that grace is universal, grace is resistible, and free will is necessary for salvation)” (139). Marvell’s tract Remarks Upon a Late Disingenuous Discourse, meanwhile, suggests to Raamsdonk that he was receptive to Arminian views on predestination, though not willing to profess them. Overall, Raamsdonk’s study lends support to the traditional portrayals of Marvell as a proponent of moderation and diplomacy and Milton as a promoter of revolution and debate. Their differences become most evident when Raamsdonk concludes, in chapter 6, that Samson Agonistes endorses acts of violence carried out by those faithfully interpreting God’s will, a position untenable to Marvell, the author of numerous pacifistic texts. Still, the historical record suggests that the two men were friends. As for England and the Dutch Republic, Raamsdonk depicts the two states as too similar in their situations and aspirations to remain on friendly terms for long. Her book should prove most valuable to scholars of Milton and Marvell who are looking for fresh approaches to comparative readings of literature and culture.

This book examines the ways Lutherans and Catholics maintained a peaceful coexistence in the towns of the Lusatian League in Upper Lusatia in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. By studying how reform occurred in these small and medium-sized towns, Christ shows how biconfessionalism lasted for over a century in a region less studied than the imperial cities and areas such as Saxony. The author argues that this religious coexistence led to a syncretism, or combination, of Catholic and Lutheran belief systems, practices, and religious spaces. The Reformation in Upper Lusatia was neither fully Catholic nor fully Lutheran, but a syncretistic combination of confessional elements that both groups could accept. These settlements were negotiated by town councils, clergy, and artisans, and not imposed from above by the king or his administrators.
