The ekphrasis of Herakles’ shield in Pseudo-Hesiod’s Aspis comprises an immersive experiment in the poetics of sound. As complement to the standard modes of visualization that are crucial to effective ekphrasis, this poem’s rich soundscape invites the audience to ‘auralize’ the sounds described by the internal observer. From the monstrous noises emitted from the shield’s iconographic world to the overdetermined correspondence of sonic features within and between narrative levels, the acoustic techniques of this poem actively destabilize traditional archaic modes of constructing and shattering ekphrastic illusion. As sound effects undermine the notion that materiality must serve as an index of iconographic fixity, and as lexical and semantic recursions echo across representational planes, the poem’s unruly acoustics ultimately problematize the relationship between the world of the shield and the world of its wielder.

This article makes the following case: according to Artemidorus of Daldis’ Oneirocriticon one main task of the dream interpreter is to identify, through knowledge of the dreamer, which components of a dream are internal in order to assess—as far as possible—the external components of a dream. I argue that very similar hermeneutic issues were being extensively theorised in Artemidorus’ period by Jewish and Christian writers who were concerned with the problem of prophetic interpolation: in particular, cases in the Bible in which prophecies do not come true. In making this comparison, I hope to clarify a number of features of Artemidorus’ hermeneutic, including the relationship between the origin and structure of dreams and the exegetical practice of the dream-interpreter.

This article aims to examine three textual problems in Statius’ Thebaid, book 5 (Hypsipyle’s narration of the massacre in Lemnos). These textual issues have been previously approached by different scholars without taking into account each other’s work. This paper conveys an overview and shows that some of these problems had already been clarified by ancient exegesis.
