ABSTRACT Across the world, natural resources play a critical role in shaping livelihoods among the ethnic and indigenous communities. This article highlights the struggles Garifuna in northern Honduras face regarding land ownership, despite being constitutionally recognized yet ignored by the government. For them, land struggles are also their racial struggles. Contested land ownerships are the outcomes of historical discriminations, leaving Garifuna vulnerable to violence. This article addresses the multidimensional aspects of land-based struggles that have resulted in social, cultural, and environmental damage, creating insurmountable pressures on local Garifuna livelihoods.

Pandemic-Amplified Material Hardship and Community-Led Support among Marshallese Diasporic Communities in the United States.
IF 0.9 Q3 SOCIAL WORK Pub Date : 2023-01-01 Epub Date: 2022-03-17 DOI: 10.1080/10875549.2022.2053924

This article explores the experiences of Marshallese diasporic migrants in the United States (U.S.) during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to material hardship and community-led relief efforts. Focus groups with 53 Marshallese migrants in three states revealed that material hardship, including food and housing insecurity, inadequate healthcare, and difficulty paying bills, intensified among their communities during the pandemic. In response, Marshallese community-based groups provided relief to their fellow community members, including food, cash assistance, and personal protective equipment. The findings fit a pattern of intensified hardship and community-led relief among marginalized communities in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Time to Change the Usual Response to College Students’ Food Insecurity

The pandemic exposed economic vulnerabilities in society. As businesses and college campuses shut down, lines at food pantries and other community food giveaways stretched for miles. College students had to figure out how to obtain food and negotiate other financial obligations. This study examines the food security of college students before and after the initial months of the pandemic, and how strengthening the social safety net stabilized food security. Our recommendations illustrate that the strengthened safety net has a food justice orientation and could be made permanent if there was the political and moral will to do so.

Food Insecurity and Economic Hardship of College Students: Before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought overwhelming concerns regarding food insecurity and economic impacts for young adults. This study examined food insecurity and economic hardship before and during the pandemic, using data from a cross-sectional survey with college students (N = 375). We employed two analytic approaches, a Latent Class Analysis and a cumulative risk approach. The findings suggest that food insecurity and economic hardship increased during the pandemic and, more importantly, the patterns of economic hardship differ in nature before and during the pandemic. Economic hardship significantly explained food insecurity, and the pandemic intensified the association.
