Musto reconstructs from Marx’s correspondence the 72 days he spent unsuccessfully seeking relief from ill-health in Algiers. The death of Marx’s eldest daughter Jenny in January 1883 (at the age of 39) is the cruellest blow, followed shortly afterwards by Marx’s own demise. Despite the heartbreaking tale, Musto ends the chapter on an inspirational note of which Marx himself would surely have approved, speaking of the message ‘that radiates incessantly from the whole of his work: organize the struggle to end the bourgeois mode of production and to achieve the emancipation of the workers of the world from the domination of capital’ (p. 125). Making very good use of Marx’s extensive late notebooks, Musto’s important volume constitutes an excellent addition to the literature: it will provide insight and inspiration to all students of Marx and his work.

and the impacts of extra phase of production for further capital accumulation may be irreversible. Each additional increase in the temperature makes certain parts of the world inhabitable and will have massive repercussions. Thus, the most important takeaway point of the book is that the author proposes an eco-socialist system where the environment is protected, and capitalism does not survive under any circumstances. The author finally analyzes the dynamics of the global capitalist system in the Russia– Ukraine war. He elucidates that the Russian war is the outcome of the crisis of the global capitalist system, which will make things much worse because the war may prevail over the state legitimacy and overaccumulation of capital issues and allows the system to renew itself once again. This concise, lucid, and not very technical work illustrates how far global capitalism has gone under capital accumulation, value and financial appropriation, and digitalization. It is a well-written book to see how capitalism restructures itself into new forms but protects its essence for the last centuries and to comprehend the need for a new economic system.

The basic structure is the same (employer/employee; owner/labourer; master/ slave, etc.): one group gets resources from another’s labour; one group has extraordinary powers of organized coercion while the other does not; and one small group is considered superior, the other larger group inferior. Austerity is just one mechanism (of many others) that reinforce these power dynamics. While the book leaves questions open about situations of genuine debt crisis in non-capitalist economies, sound finance, proper monetary policy, and otherwise, it certainly proves its thesis and forcefully demonstrates the exploitative, class dimension of austerity.
