Diaspora Memory Conflicts: Struggles over Genocide Commemoration, Recognition and Denial

Abstract This contribution analyses conflicts around genocide memory in the diaspora. It shows how Assyrian/Syriac initiatives to create memorials to the 1915 genocide has triggered reactions by Turkish diaspora groups and the Turkish government. The Rwandan government, in contrast, has mobilized its diaspora to fight denial of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, while other diaspora activists draw attention to—and create commemorative practices around—other, silenced, mass-atrocities. The text discusses the opportunities for victimhood recognition and memorialization offered in the diaspora, and how genocide memory conflicts intertwine with foreign policy matters and national and local politics in the country of settlement.

Autonomising Conflict: Conflict Transportation in Online Activity among Kurdish and Turkish Diasporas in Denmark

Abstract Within diasporas and conflict studies, little research has so far looked at the content and dynamics of online conflict transportation. Addressing this gap, this study investigates how the Turkish-Kurdish conflict is reflected in the online mobilisation of Kurdish and Turkish diasporas in Denmark. Through an online ethnography of associations on Facebook, the study finds that while conflict transportation occurs in online spaces, it is shaped and influenced by the country of residence, transnational networks and other diasporic communities and actors. This suggests a plurality of consciousness rather than the duality of ‘homeland’-‘host-country’ attachments often attributed to diasporas.

A In this study, perceptions of security and civic services were measured among the Israeli-Arab minority youth. Three hundred participants completed a questionnaire assessing their propensity to enrol in security and civic services. Both types of national service were correlated with life satisfaction in Israel and three temporal attraction and repulsion factors that occurred in 2020–2021: the IDF assisting local municipalities during the COVID-19 pandemic, hostilities between Jews and Arabs in May 2021, and crime in Arab communities. A strong positive correlation was found between life satisfaction and willingness to engage in security and national service. The temporal factors did not mediate this correlation. Finally, the possibility of recruiting Arab minorities to security organizations is discussed. [ FROM AUTHOR]
