Territorial and ethno-territorial institutions are used as tools of institutional engineering in divided societies. However, they also face major risks, as they might deepen and perpetuate societal divisions, deprive group members living dispersed from group representation, and prepare the grounds for new conflicts. Our comment embeds the four proposals put forward by Ivan Pepić in the debate, with a comparative perspective.

Cypriot Youth Views Matter: Comparison of Diaspora and Islander Youth’s Views on Peace

ABSTRACT This contribution compares the perception of peace of Cypriot youth, who live on the island and in the United Kingdom, and is based on interviews with them. Even though Cyprus has a large diaspora community compared to its population, diaspora studies have been unable to garner attention to the role of the Cypriot diaspora in peacebuilding in their homeland. Ignorance of young people both on the island and in the diaspora has prevented the inclusion of Cypriot youth in politics and peace processes. However, the role and perceptions of young people either in diaspora or on the island are quite important to reach sustainable peace. Youth’s readiness for peace and willingness to co-exist would affect the outcome of a process. Accordingly, this contribution of the collection offers a two-part contribution to the literature: first, focusing on the neglected youth dimension in peace and conflict studies, and second, providing a comparative analysis of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot diaspora youth in the diaspora studies.

Conflicted Identities: Negotiating Belonging among Young People from the Lebanese Diasporas in Montreal
IF 0.8 Q3 ETHNIC STUDIES Pub Date : 2023-04-26 DOI: 10.1080/17449057.2023.2199610

To elucidate the reproduction of antagonist relationships between diasporic populations, conflict transportation theories tend to focus on societal and transnational contexts. This approach often neglects the complexity of people’s lived experiences and risks essentializing diasporic identities. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among young people of the Lebanese diasporas in Montreal, this contribution reconsiders the interplay between diasporas and conflict by pondering the shifting nature of existence. It argues that everyday encounters and life trajectories play a critical role in how the diasporic youth relate to identity categories, inspiring them to continuously renegotiate and transform what being Lebanese means in their existence.

Sri Lankan Diasporas between Participation and Conflict: Intergroup Dynamics in Italy

Anna Quattrone
Abstract By analysing participation and conflict in different spatialities and temporalities, this paper explores how Sinhalese and Tamil diasporas in Italy perceive themselves and forge their relationship with the contentious politics in their homeland. It investigates whether the features that characterised conflictual dynamics in Sri Lanka (homeland) have been transported to Italy (host country) and how they have been configured here (reproduction versus autonomisation), and it explores whether new asymmetries of power have arisen in Italy. The aim is to overcome a static approach to diasporas by exploring how identity and forms of participation are shaped, even through conflict. Building on interviews and an extensive analysis of secondary sources, the paper shows that both conflict autonomisation and conflict neutralisation are present in Italy, while new forms and purposes of political mobilisation have emerged, depending on the diasporic generation and the peculiarities of the new context.

Pathways to Conflict Transportation and Autonomisation: The Armenian Diaspora and the Conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh
IF 0.8 Q3 ETHNIC STUDIES Pub Date : 2023-04-18 DOI: 10.1080/17449057.2023.2199601

ABSTRACT Since its inception the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has generated multiple narratives in the region itself, in Armenia and Azerbaijan, and in the concerned diasporas. The war that occurred in 2020 engendered high levels of diasporic mobilisation, but interestingly the discourses of Armenian diaspora activists largely differed from those of Armenia or Nagorno-Karabakh. Drawing from theories of conflict transportation and autonomisation in diaspora settings, this contribution explores Armenian diaspora mobilisation in the USA, France and Russia, and argues that diverging narratives and positionalities in diasporic spaces, as compared to home countries, explain the (re)shaping of homeland conflict dynamics in diaspora settings.
