The fi rst museum studies curricula, developed in the 1960s, mapped out the core functions of collections management, conservation, curatorship, exhibition planning, and interpretation. Mastery of these areas, often in addition to a disciplinary specialization, distinguished early museum professionals. Such widely used texts as Museums in Motion: An Introduction to the History and Functions of Museums (E.P. Alexander, 1978, revised most recently in 2017) o ff ered a baseline of knowledge and skills for the museum practitioner. Over time, additional core functions including management, computer usage and digitization, public programming, and marketing, and such key principles as social responsibility, inclusivity, diversity and community engagement rounded out curricula, creating challenges for covering all areas in appropriate depth, and generating a wealth of new more specialized reference texts. Not surprisingly, programs that focused on single core areas such as curatorship or exhibition design emerged. Today there are over 110 masters programs in museum studies worldwide 1 along with many other academic and professional development programs that grant undergraduate, diploma or doctoral cre-dentials in general and specialized areas of practice.

Foundling museums: exhibition design and the intersection of the vital materiality of foundling tokens and affective visitor experience

ABSTRACT Exhibition design matters. It determines the way objects are presented, the stories they tell and the way visitors experience them. Using theories of vital materiality and affect as entry points into understanding visitor experience better, this paper explores and compares our affective responses as visitor-researchers to the exhibition designs of foundling tokens at the Foundling Museum in London and the Museum of the Ospedale degli Innocenti in Florence. The paper asks how sensitive and thoughtful exhibition design impacts our experience. The paper concludes that different design choices create subtly different affective flows and with them, uniquely personalised opportunities for engagement.

Tourism marketing in a metaverse context: the new reality of European museums on meta

ABSTRACT The ‘contactless’ culture established after COVID-19 and the development of metaverse technologies, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, blockchain and artificial intelligence, serve as vectors of change in museum tourism. Contactless behaviours have forced European museums to reconfigure and strengthen their digital communication and marketing strategies, mainly through social media and audiovisual content, to connect with their audience by virtual means only. This experience has laid the foundations for hybrid communication (physical and virtual) by museums and acted as a pilot experience for their activities in the metaverse of the future. The aim of this research is to analyse the online tourism communication strategies implemented by 20 European museums through Facebook (Meta) in times of COVID-19. The results show the effect of lockdown on patterns of consumption and interaction, and the impact of message content and format on user engagement and participation.
