ABSTRACT The ‘contactless’ culture established after COVID-19 and the development of metaverse technologies, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, blockchain and artificial intelligence, serve as vectors of change in museum tourism. Contactless behaviours have forced European museums to reconfigure and strengthen their digital communication and marketing strategies, mainly through social media and audiovisual content, to connect with their audience by virtual means only. This experience has laid the foundations for hybrid communication (physical and virtual) by museums and acted as a pilot experience for their activities in the metaverse of the future. The aim of this research is to analyse the online tourism communication strategies implemented by 20 European museums through Facebook (Meta) in times of COVID-19. The results show the effect of lockdown on patterns of consumption and interaction, and the impact of message content and format on user engagement and participation.

ABSTRACT An exploration of conservation and curatorial practices surrounding Indigenous American heritage in European museums began with an American Academy in Rome Prize fellowship which served to reconnect three of the co-authors. The stunning discovery of seven Yup’ik masks from western Alaska at the Vatican Museums led two of the co-authors to connect with Chuna McIntyre, a Yup’ik artist and performer. In an effort to pilot a collaborative process where conservators and curators might have their technical and cultural understanding of these masks enhanced, a three-hour virtual meeting was arranged after the masks were documented and the images and information shared. The successes and challenges are presented here from various viewpoints.

ABSTRACT To pique the interest of local audiences in learning the pre-WWII history of National Taiwan University (NTU) and facilitate the dialogue between different ideologists on protecting colonial heritage, the History Gallery of NTU conceived an April Fool’s prank revolving around the sculpted representations of Japanese colonial figures in Taiwan. The main plotline is based on an actual historical event of a bust-unveiling ceremony for president Shidehara, the first president of the antecedent of NTU—Taihoku Imperial University. The prank began with systemic dissemination of the news regarding the finding of a head sculpture of Viscount Kodama Gentarō, culminated in an announcement of a serendipitous discovery of the bust for president Shidehara on April Fool’s Day, and ended by recounting the stories of rescuing the busts for Dr Hidetaka and Dr Tomoe. Despite drawing some criticism, the Gallery was acclaimed by many for its originality, responsiveness, and thoroughness in the campaign.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of cultural management tools in the field of public heritage management (using museums as an example), before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study draws on the results of a survey conducted in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan. Content from social media pages and websites for public heritage sites in these countries were used as well. Despite the disparities between the research objects, their comparative analysis allowed the identification of common trends in the studied sector. It was proved that public heritage sites are gradually shifting away from repetitive activities and becoming more self-sufficient. They have also started to serve as testing grounds for various projects. The influence of COVID-19 on this sector, regional differences in public heritage management in the studied countries have been identified, and recommendations have been developed.
