Abstract It is widely acknowledged that the furniture industry has a significant environmental impact and is one of the vital sectors for improving sustainability. However, there is a lack of comprehensive, scientifically-based, furniture-specific knowledge and know-how, including a theoretical framework, approaches, methods and tools, to guide the furniture industry toward greater sustainability. A growing international scientific community is working to fill the gap. This PhD research is framed into this research area focusing on Life Cycle Design (LCD) and Sustainable Product-Service System Design (S.PSSD). The LeNS network 1 , which includes nearly 150 design Universities distributed worldwide, is the primary scientific community for reference. The research aims to develop furniture-specific knowledge and know-how to support the Sustainable Furniture System Design (SFSD).

Abstract Design demands achieving a balance between creative and routine activities. This balance is vital to ensure the survival and prosperity of design entrepreneurs’ businesses. This paper examines how design entrepreneurs enact individual ambidexterity to carry out both creative (exploration) and routine (exploitation) activities in their own businesses. Empirically, it draws on interviews with 23 designers who founded micro businesses, where they carry out design, production, marketing, and sales activities. Our findings show that individual ambidexterity was smoothly enacted to handle design and production tasks in an intertwined fashion, thus reaching a compromise between exploration and exploitation, while it was hindered by the contradiction between ‘the sales mindset’ and ‘the creative mindset’ designers encountered when faced with marketing activities. On the other hand, ‘the business mindset’, which primarily belongs to the non-creatives’ world, was considered as valuable and essential for a creative professional choosing an entrepreneurial career path.

Abstract Selçuk Artut’s works, which take their reference from geometric patterns, have often had influence, sparking many new ideas and generating innovative thinking. His recent exhibition, entitled as Geomart-ut7, in the Beyoğlu Culture Route programme, located at Atatürk Cultural Centre in Istanbul, creates a multi-layered venue for contemplation. The geometric patterns which move, float, diverge and converge by the means of computer coding on tall digital screens, and most of these take their inspiration from the marvels of geometrical artworks that are observed throughout history. However when we carefully observe these animated geometrical patterns, we see that the artist’s works are not merely the replicas of traditional patterns; through animation, the geometrical patterns, which are animated by coding techniques, change their angles and directions, yielding intermediary figures. The current creation process, which was defined by the artist himself as Dialectical Creativity, emerges because of mutual interactions between the artist and the computer, which he uses to communicate through the code language. The fundamentals of this artistic production cover the themes of repetition, meditative effect and infinity; thus, it is very appropriate to consider Artut’s artworks in the contemporary age. Here we see the attempt of the artist to derive ideas from his deeply-rooted heritage, and make the meaningful connections with the past, even while emerging onto the contemporary art scene.

Abstract In the early stages of the design and innovation processes, stakeholders often develop a design brief. As a document gathering all design requirements, it is adopted as an agreement and a roadmap to facilitate communication throughout the project. This study expands the current literature about design brief tools by delving into the briefing process within design interventions conducted by design promotion organisations. We investigated the strategies and practices of Centro Brasil Design to nurture design among Brazilian enterprises. Particularly, we focused on its Design Export program, which aims to insert design in export-oriented businesses. Supported by the Design Quality Criteria framework, our study probed the program’s development and its design briefs, as well as the designers involved in the projects. The findings revealed how a design brief could lever the design advisory service. We further identified a new approach to briefing procedures and a design brief model for design interventions.

Absence is one important performance appraisal. Absences made by each worker can affect the net monthly salary PT Bringin Karya Sejahtera is a service provider engaged in the business sector or providing services for building cleaning workers, building and building technicians. But there are some problems in his absence in the field of cleaning ATMs. Employees must come to the ATM and take selfies to take attendance. The purpose of this study is to map locations where ATM officers are located so that employees can take attendance at BRI branch offices using GPS technology, and barcodes on Android by calculating the distance to the location using the Haversine Formula method. This study also discusses absence from work due to leave, permission, sickness and overtime calculation. The development method used in designing android-based attendance applications is Rapid Application Development (RAD). The system design uses the Unified Modeling Language (UML). System coding is done using Java, PHP and MYSQL. The results of this study are the design of an android-based attendance application for employees to attend attendance at BRI branch offices.

Abstract Family firms (FFs) represent approximately two thirds of all firms with huge impact on global economy. Subsequently, innovation is also considered to be the key to competitive advantage, and long-term survival. Thus, research on innovation in FFs has been rising. However, there is a gap in the literature to understand how FFs’ capabilities are shaped by a constantly changing environment and how they survive in it. Since design-intensive industries reveal dynamic innovation capabilities (DICs) in emerging markets that are mostly underrepresented in the literature, they form the research context of this study. The outcomes of this paper are expected to reveal the heterogeneity of FFs’ capabilities as well as the strategies of FFs. Secondly, the findings would reveal the roles of design contributing to these capabilities in FFs, which highlight the interaction between design and innovation practices of manufacturing FFs in an emerging market.

PT. Pena Berkah Ilmu is a medium-sized company engaged in Food & Beverage, social and humanitarian institutions, event organizers, travel and merchandise sales where this company still implements attendance methods such as signatures for employees. The attendance of each employee is recorded through the existing attendance system. However, in its implementation, sometimes there are some persons who do not attend or forget to attend. This results in the employee being considered absent. This desire arose because this company experienced difficulties in processing attendance information data, resulting in more and more hardcopy archives and making it difficult when the company's management intended to recap and re-collect data and employee attendance lists. This study uses the waterfall method which describes a systematic and sequential approach to software, starting with the specification of employee requirements, design, modeling, construction, delivery of the system to employees and complete software support that is produced. With this attendance application, it will be easier for employees to carry out attendance attendance even though they are outside the office and attendance data will later be stored in the database so that it will make it easier for the personnel department to be able to recapitulate employee data.
PT.

The purpose of this research is to create an expert system using Forward Chaining to diagnose the level of learning stress in high school students using Sugeno's Fuzzy Inference System method. Data Flow Diagrams (DFD) are used to describe a data logic model or process created by the system while prototype is a development method that is used as a stage in developing applications and testing. Based on the results of research and testing of expert system design to diagnose learning stress levels in high school students using the Website-based Forward Chaining method that has been carried out by the author, several conclusions can be drawn, namely; This research succeeded in making an expert system design to diagnose the level of learning stress in high school students using the Forward Chaining method, and this study succeeded in carrying out an analysis of the results of IF THEN ELSE calculations using Forward Chaining.
