ABSTRACTThree decades have passed since India implemented market-oriented economic reforms. While levels of and trends in consumption and income inequality have been studied extensively, wealth inequality has not received the same level of attention. In this paper, we use nationally representative household surveys to show that the period of economic reforms has witnessed a sharp rise in interpersonal wealth inequality. A decomposition of this rising wealth inequality shows that wealth is increasingly concentrated in urban areas, among a few privileged social groups, and in the top decile of the Indian population.RÉSUMÉTrente ans ont passé depuis que l’Inde a implémenté ses réformes économiques axées sur le marché. ABSTRACTConsumer debt continues to challenge local government financial sustainability. There is a debate in the literature on whether developing countries should consider commercialising local service delivery. Using data from South African metropolitan municipalities, this study examines the impact of commercialising service delivery on consumer debt. Fixed effects modelling is adopted, and results show that commercialising sanitation increased consumer debt by 22.5 per cent, commercialising solid waste collection reduced consumer debt by 11.9 per cent, while commercialising electricity had no significant impact on consumer debt. These results imply that policymakers should consider the type and nature of public service when deciding its commercialisation.RÉSUMÉLa dette des consommateurs reste un défi pour la viabilité financière des gouvernements locaux. Ces résultats suggèrent que les décideurs politiques devraient considérer le type et la nature des services publics lorsqu’ils prennent des décisions quant à leur commercialisation.KEYWORDS: Commercialisationdeveloping countrieslocal government debtmunicipal consumer debtmunicipalisation Data availability statementThe authors undertake to provide the data used in this study if requested to do so.Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Notes1 As of 27 March 2022, US$1 = R14.58.2 South African municipalities are categorised into metropolitan (A), district (C) and local (B) municipalities. ABSTRACTThis study focuses on the impact of Urban Development-Induced Rural Displacement and Resettlement (UDIRDR) projects on the livelihood of the affected people through a literature review. Identifying various focus/objectives of previous studies on UDIRDR and eight dimensions of livelihood assets, it tries to build a link with the sustainable livelihood framework proposed by the Department for International Development (DFID), especially for rural communities. Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the authors.Additional informationNotes on contributorsIshkiran SinghIshkiran Singh is a Ph.D. scholar in the Department of Planning and Architecture at the National Institute of Technology Rourkela, Odisha, India, under the supervision of Dr. Soumi Muhuri. The UK is a global leader in Aid for Trade (AFT). Aid for Trade discourse frames it as a solution to development challenges and key to building trade relationships. This article examines the rhetorical value of this framing in pursuit of myriad interests amidst Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and changes to the UK's aid budget and administration. It is informed by data from government documents and interviews with AFT and aid experts. This study finds that AFT discourse is used to justify the UK's merging of diplomatic and development agendas and its new 'Global Britain' identity.
