Charting the Course: Human Factors Research for Shipping Energy-Efficient Operations 航路规划:船舶节能运营的人为因素研究

To achieve climate objectives, it is essential to close "energy efficiency gaps"—the discrepancies between potential and actual energy savings. While much research in the maritime sector has focused on policy and onshore influences, it is unclear to what extent research is overlooking the potential of onboard human factors to mitigate climate impact. This study addresses this gap through a systematic literature review of the results sections of 17 journal articles on maritime human factors. Using Thematic Analysis, we generate 12 themes, with the most prominent being stakeholders, knowledge, and technical implementation. These themes provide insights into onshore influences, seafarers' expertise, as well as examples of the usage and limitations of implemented systems. Conversely, underrepresented themes such as learning, system properties, and safety referring to how seafarers acquire knowledge, specific design guidelines for onboard technology, or how to overcome the goal conflict of energy efficiency and safety. Our findings underline that key areas in this field have been studied disparately, and that a complete picture is necessary to close the energy efficiency gap here and in other sectors.

Design Process with Generative AI and Thinking Methods: Divergence of Ideas Using the Fishbone Diagram Method 生成式人工智能的设计过程与思维方法:鱼骨图方法的思想分歧

In 2022, high-performance generative AI — such as Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT — were reported upon and released amid increasing momentum for the utilization of such generative AI. In the field of architecture, generative AI is expected to not only be used for task automation, but as a means of diverging ideas as well, especially in the planning stage of architectural design. However, effective application methods have not yet been reported.Therefore, this study proposes a concept-making method that combines generative AI and ways to diverge ideas in architectural design and proposes a tuning method for ChatGPT to enable more effective dialogue. In the proposed method, ChatGPT is involved as a member in group work settings that aims to create concepts and initial designs using the fishbone diagram, one of the ways to list and categorize factors and ideas to achieve goals. In addition, ChatGPT is tuned to obtain more effective factors and ideas, particularly those related to spatial composition and shapes by inputting text regarding architectural design and specific architects.The proposed method was tested via case studies that created concepts and initial designs for an actual architectural competition. The results show that external ideas obtained from generative AI inspire the fishbone diagram process. The concepts and designs created seem imaginative and appropriate for competition.

Small UXS-Squad Teaming: Military Operational Use Cases 小型uxs小队团队:军事操作用例

The proliferation of small unmanned systems (i.e., drones) being deployed at the squad or small unit level for military applications continues to increase (e.g., the use of both commercial and bespoke custom drones in the conflict in Ukraine has been a headlining story since the start of the conflict). The reliability and capabilities these low-cost platforms offer pose numerous potential benefits for squad level operations, particularly for Special Operations Forces (SOF). This paper and associated poster present a summary of current operational use cases for commercially available small unmanned systems based on feedback from a cohort of representative military end users. The purpose of this summary is to provide designers and developers of unmanned systems, payloads, autonomy, and other related capabilities with an operationally grounded set of use cases to better inform their efforts from the perspective of the users who must make the decision to rely on these technologies, noting that this population is typically one that is challenging to access.

Evaluation of unpleasant green environment based on biological reaction and contingent valuation 基于生物反应和条件评价的不良绿色环境评价

Green environment such as parks and woods have been maintained as having healing and relaxing effects. These effects have been evaluated by biological reactions and contingent valuation method. Most previous studies are focusing on green environments where maintenance is done. On the other hand, there are many unmaintained green environments such as abandoned detached houses and woods. There is a possibility that people feel uncomfortable with these problems, such as increasing anxiety about crime prevention and disasters and deteriorating the local image. However, to the best of our knowledge, no research has been conducted that focuses on the discomfort of unmaintained green environment. Therefore, in this study, we investigate subjects' biological reactions (cerebral blood flow and heart rate) and willingness to pay (WTP) for the improvement, presenting images of abandoned detached houses and woods as unmaintained green environment, and analyze the relationship between biological reactions and WTP.59 subjects joined this experiment. After a 60-second rest period, each subject sees the 4 unmaintained greenery image and 4 maintained greenery images, 5 seconds each. In order to consider the order effect, the order of unmaintained and maintained greenery images was alternated by half for each subject. In addition, data showing large fluctuations or trends during breaks were excluded from the analysis.As a result, 1) in case of abandoned detached house, the heart rate tended to increase when they see the "unmaintained greenery", and in case of abandoned woods, the heart rate tended to decrease when they see the "maintained greenery". 2) The heart rate variation differ by gender and presentation order of images. Females showed greater variation. Interestingly, there was a contrasting change in whether the maintained images were viewed first or later in both abandoned detached house and woods. 3) We cannot find the difference in cerebral blood flow. 4) There was no relationship between the presence or absence of changes in biological reactions and WTP. Though we need further investigation, we show the possibility of biological reactions to evaluate unpleasant green environment.

Behavior-based Understanding of Elderly People with Dementia: A Hierarchical Classification of Daily Object Use 基于行为的老年痴呆患者认知:日常物品使用的分层分类

Providing individualized daily living care is quintessentially important to ensure the quality of life for elderly individuals, especially in nursing homes. Such care involves facilitating independent living, supporting social participation within nursing home settings, and preventing unintentional injuries such as falls. To effectively implement this, caregivers need to thoroughly understand the daily living activities of elderly people and to improve their living environments. The purpose of this study is to develop a system that can assist in planning residents' daily living care through automatically summarizing the daily activities in their rooms using depth cameras that respect privacy. The developed system consists of a function for extracting how elderly individuals use daily objects and another function for classifying behaviors based on the object use activities through hierarchical clustering. This system allows caregivers to understand the daily routines of the residents without predefining behaviors to be identified. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the authors applied the method to analyzing 9 days’ worth of activities of an 87-year-old female resident in a nursing home. The experimental results demonstrate that the system was able to detect abnormal behaviors such as the repeated, unnatural use of drawers, without any predefined criteria for abnormal behaviors. The caregivers confirmed the utility of the system in summarizing daily behavior patterns and automatically detecting abnormal behaviors typically seen in elderly individuals with dementia.

Community walking system design from a co-creation perspective: The example of Hongqiao Airport New Village 共同创造视角下的社区步行系统设计——以虹桥机场新村为例

In the realm of urban development, human-scaled community walking systems are continually devoured in large-scale urban renewals. Pressing issues such as fragmentation and segmentation of pedestrian paths, poor walkway quality, and outdated walking facilities demand resolution. On the personal and societal levels, walking, being the most fundamental mode of transportation, has unmet demands, with decreasing neighborly interactions exacerbating societal isolation and loneliness.The paper introduces the co-creation concept and related theories to dissect the components and human-centric developmental trends of the community walking system. It focuses on Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport Village's current walking system, employing participatory research, in-depth interviews, and co-creation workshops. This bottom-up approach encapsulates the residents' walking needs, exploring strategies to design a community walking system from a co-creation perspective.The paper proposes four strategies: the construction of human-centric physical infrastructure, the development of multifunctional spaces, fostering of inclusive social interactions, and promoting sustainable development through community involvement. These strategies are aimed at enhancing urban community livability and fostering human connections.

Pressing issues such as fragmentation and segmentation of pedestrian paths, poor walkway quality, and outdated walking facilities demand resolution. On the personal and societal levels, walking, being the most fundamental mode of transportation, has unmet demands, with decreasing neighborly interactions exacerbating societal isolation and loneliness.The paper introduces the co-creation concept and related theories to dissect the components and human-centric developmental trends of the community walking system. It focuses on Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport Village's current walking system, employing participatory research, in-depth interviews, and co-creation workshops. This bottom-up approach encapsulates the residents' walking needs, exploring strategies to design a community walking system from a co-creation perspective.The paper proposes four strategies: the construction of human-centric physical infrastructure, the development of multifunctional spaces, fostering of inclusive social interactions, and promoting sustainable development through community involvement. Effects of reflective writing for students in the design project 反思性写作对学生设计专题的影响

In the field of design, experts employ flexible design methods and resources to solve problems, which would be the learning goal that learners might be able to accomplish step by step by reflection. Efficient learning requires more than just accumulating knowledge. It necessitates proper organization, internalization, and reflection. In this study, we integrated the adjusted empathy maps as reflection tools into the "Archaeology and Design" course to assess the students‘ reflective states in the design process. This course involves a design project centered around indigenous culture, guided by the four stages of the Double Diamond design model (2003). The research focused on the students' thinking process and their reflective abilities. With the aims mentioned above, this study used qualitative data based on the empathy maps on students' reflections on the design process and their own reflection status on the four design stages from the Double Diamond design model (2003). We instructed students to journal down the circumstances they encountered and the feelings they experienced. They had to do the reflection by answering the questions on the empathy map at every stage of the design process. Aside from that, we also did the reflection questionnaires having been designed by Kember et al.(2000) and Sobral( 2001), which could demonstrate the change before and after the 4 stages of reflection. For the analysis, the reflective texts were analyzed based on the model created by Terry Borton (1970), which consisted of three key questions: what, so what, and now what. And, the results of the questionnaires would be analyzed with Wilcoxon signed rank test by using SPSS 19.After the analysis, we not only observed an increase in the amount of reflective content, but also identified three main points that appeared in the texts of the reflective writings. These points included the integration of information, fostering more creative thinking, and developing a heightened awareness of student designers themselves and their peers. Based on these ascertainments, we concluded that through this form of reflective writing, students are able to retrospect the past and contemplate their next steps. By engaging in reflective practices, students not only enhance their design and reflective abilities, but also develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others throughout the design project, which are significant in the process of becoming an expert. Additionally, the study aims to promote design reflection and extend the impact of this research by sharing its results.

Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Programs for Overweight and Obese Patients: A Cross-sectional Survey 超重和肥胖患者的安全病人处理和活动方案:一项横断面调查

Healthcare providers face numerous challenges in lifting and mobilizing overweight and obese patients, which often lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). To address this, hospitals implement safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) programs, including mechanical lift equipment, policies, and training. This study surveyed 134 healthcare workers in five Veterans Administration Medical Centers who regularly used SPHM programs. According to findings, handling bariatric patients frequently correlated with higher chronic back pain risk. Injuries occurred when not using powered equipment. Improvements like sufficient time with equipment and clear policies reduced injury likelihood. Equipment was crucial in preventing musculoskeletal injuries and pain. Findings emphasize using powered equipment and updating SPHM programs based on worker feedback for better patient handling practices.

Bridging the Gap: Investigating the Role of Physiological Indicators in Capturing Cognitive State Changes among Naval Personnel 弥合差距:调查生理指标在捕获海军人员认知状态变化中的作用

This study supplements findings from traditional cognitive assessments using physiological markers—Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR)—in conjunction with self-report psychological measures to better understand changes in cognitive state. Forty-nine sailors and marines completed pre-experiment surveys, including the Stanford Sleepiness Scale, the Short Stress State Questionnaire (SSSQ), and a Cognitive State Survey. These assessed various psychological parameters, including arousal, distress, engagement, and sleep quality. Resting GSR and HRV data were collected using Gazepoint Biometric sensors before and after participants completed a set of cognitive tasks. BIOPAC and Kubios software analyses revealed significant changes in several psychophysiological parameters from baseline to post-task, including average skin conductance level (SCL), minimum SCL, and maximum heart rate. Notably, a strong correlation emerged between the low-frequency power feature of HRV and the task-oriented thought score from the SSSQ and between the maximum heart rate and the distress score from the SSSQ. Despite data quality challenges that reduced the sample size, the study uncovers valuable insights into the use of physiological markers in detecting cognitive state changes. These findings highlight the potential of such an approach and underscore the need for further research.

Understanding Challenges and Facilitating Knowledge Transfer for Service Innovation: Insights from a Survey of German Service Companies and a Use Case 理解挑战和促进服务创新的知识转移:来自德国服务公司的调查和一个用例的见解

Innovation is one of the key elements for entrepreneurial success. Small and medium-sized service companies in particular continually innovate their offerings to remain competitive. To do this, they must constantly keep abreast of trends, the latest technological developments, and scientific methodologies. Due to a shortage of resources, they are often dependent on external support from information service providers. However, this knowledge transfer is subject to hurdles that are specific to small and medium-sized enterprises. This paper examines the knowledge transfer challenges faced by such service organizations. To this end, it first presents the results of a company survey and derives recommendations for information provision. The paper concludes with a practical example of a company using the latest technologies to innovate its service offering and how such information is made available to other companies.
