The interaction between Christianity and Confucianism has been marked by both conflict and accommodation. In the 19th century, the discovery of the works of Mozi, a pre-Qin Chinese philosopher who was critical of Confucianism, led to a change in the approach of some missionaries. This commentary examines how 19th century missionaries strategically utilized Mohist philosophy to undermine Confucianism and promote Christianity. The implications of this commentary for religious research are significant in terms of providing context and guiding future investigations as this commentary offers new insights into the complex relationship between Christianity and Confucianism in China by highlighting the strategic use of Mohist philosophy as a tool for evangelism and the implications it had for the larger discourse on Christianity and Confucianism in the region.

This analysis investigates favorable racial attitudes toward blacks. Blacks and educated politically progressive whites tend to have such favorable attitudes. Due to cultural polarization, the rejection of conservative Christians may be tied to favorable racial attitudes among educated progressive whites. This study examines the possibility that political identity and religious outgrouping are connected to favorable racial attitudes of educated progressive whites. The dataset is drawn from the 2020 American National Elections Survey, a nationally representative survey in the United States that asks about a range of political issues and attitudes ( n = 8,178). The key construct of interest is racial attitudes, specifically favorable attitudes toward black Americans. This is measured as an index of five questions regarding survey respondent views of black hiring preferences, special favors, slavery difficulties, deservingness, and trying hard. Attitudes of warmth toward conservative Christians are inversely related to supporting favorable racial attitudes among educated white progressives. However, warmth toward conservative Christians are not related to favorable racial attitudes among black Americans. Favorable racial attitudes can result from outgrouping needs of perceived politically and religiously abhorrent social identities. Polarization may result in educated political progressives supporting blacks.

Audience Considerations: Ten Tips, Crafting a Hook, and the Writing Process

This editorial focuses on writing academic articles that appeal to researcher audiences. I offer 10 tips for audience considerations in writing research articles. One tip is to develop a hook. What is a hook and how does one craft it? I help to answer these questions by encouraging authors to move beyond the over-utilized claim that “very little research exists on this topic.” That is a challenging claim to substantiate after decades and centuries of existing studies on most topics, and it is unnecessary. More than likely in this contemporary year, there are many studies relevant to the topics of any article. Their lack is probably more a reflection of the author not thoroughly looking than whether they exist. But why make such a challenging claim? There are many other interesting reasons to pay attention to a topic than lack of attention. Be more creative than only “filling a gap.” The editorial concludes with attention to the writing process and an affirmation of the inverted triangle for organizing the structure of each section in an article.

Parental Influence and Religious Context: A Cross-Level Perspective on Volunteering during Adolescence and Early Adulthood

Different religions may have different cultural values toward volunteering in the wider community. Although prior research has examined how individual religious characteristics may influence volunteering, comparatively less is known about how different religious contexts in which one is embedded may bring about variations in volunteering. To fill in this gap, this study applied multilevel analyses to merged data from the National Study of Youth and Religion (NSYR), the U.S. Census, and the Religious Congregations and Membership Study (RCMS). Results suggest that a county’s Catholic population share was positively associated with the frequency of youth volunteering even after controlling for a wide range of individual and county-level variables. Surprisingly, an increasing county-level Catholic population share may even strengthen the positive effect of parental volunteering influence on youth volunteering. In contrast, the county-level evangelical Protestant population share bear a negative relationship with youth volunteering frequency, which was mediated by county-level socioeconomic controls.
