‘You have to ask the right questions': a spatial analysis of the sense of belonging within higher education computer science “你必须提出正确的问题”:高等教育计算机科学中归属感的空间分析

ABSTRACT There is a call for more students to continue into computer science (CS), but as many leave their studies before completing, there is a potential in retaining students rather than focusing on recruitment alone. The retention literature proposes ‘sense of belonging’ as a key concept. This paper contributes with nuancing how sense of belonging is shaped differently within different spaces at the same CS study-programme, by drawing on narrative interviews and ethnographic fieldwork with BA-students, analysed through a spatial analytic lens. By applying the metaphors of a solar system and force fields, we investigate how sense of belonging was constructed within relational spaces and students’ identity-negotiations within them. Three spaces are found: The study-lounge (the epicenter of the solar system), the pulsating planet, and the distant isolated planet. Conclusions show how the epicenter are enforced by teaching and learning activities, and how broadening what counts hold potential to retain students.

ABSTRACT Laboratories have long been integral to science and engineering education. They encompass diverse formats, repeatedly engaging students in technical programs. These various forms entail distinct pedagogical approaches, expectations, and technical requirements. Scholarly discourse on laboratory education exhibits both historical context and recurrent debates. Despite the laboratory's potential, the focus often centers on knowledge and skill development rather than forward-looking competencies. This paper categorizes these discussions, providing an overview of laboratories' contributions to learning. It delves into the potential role of laboratories in modern education, covering hands-on and Cross Reality (XR) labs, instructional methods, objectives, and research-based learning. The paper aims to illuminate laboratories' capabilities in enhancing the learning process, and it explores the role of research-based learning in conjunction with the laboratory.

Over the last few decades, a wide range of works have featured studies documenting successful pedagogic collaborations in the form of university-industry partnerships in engineering education. In light of this, we conducted a systematic literature review of these studies centred around fi ve key research questions: (a) purposes of university-industry collaborations, (b) theories used to guide such work, (c) types of methods employed, (d) evidence-based best practices identi fi ed and (e) areas of future work to be explored. Publications were selected for inclusion by screening and appraising results obtained from databases and keywords re fi ned through a scoping study. We conclude from our fi ndings that future studies would bene fi t from better alignment with literature or theoretical frameworks and speci fi c robust methods. Additionally, early and middle years of undergraduate engineering programs o ff er underutilised opportunities for partnership, in line with designing a more futures-focused educational curriculum.

ABSTRACT Presented here is a novel engineering degree initiative established at Charles Sturt University (CSU), Australia. This program embodies emerging trends and prospects in engineering education, aspiring to nurture adept engineers well-prepared for practical application. Furthermore, this paper delves into the application of this program for training the next generation of water engineers, equipping them with indispensable skills to confront novel challenges. The CSU Engineering program incorporates several attributes commonly found in progressive engineering curricula. It places significance on work-based learning and encompasses an extensive 6000-hour industrial work placement. This emphasizes student self-reflection, engineering design, robust academic leadership, the integration of educational innovation and novel tools for scholastic exploration, and comprehensive student assessment. Gaining robust industry support, the CSU Engineering program garners recognition as an exemplar for future education. The adaptability, professionalism, responsibility, and leadership exhibited by CSU cadets are highly regarded by their industrial partners. Feedback highlights the consistent advancement of cadets' soft skills, spanning teamwork, communication, leadership, community engagement, and interpersonal relations. Notably, CSU cadets receive substantial remuneration from their industrial engagements. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions, the CSU Engineering program continues to operate seamlessly with minimal disruption.
