Representation through affective Correspondence:The force of feelings and their consequences for representative democracy

This article introduces conceptual tools to understand the affective dimensions of representation, presenting ‘affective correspondence’ as an evaluative measure. The way a representative is affected by and affects others, in ways similar to those they represent, is critical to the possibility for descriptive/symbolic representation to achieve substantive representation. When this ‘affective alignment’ cannot be achieved, ‘affective receptivity’—that is an openness to being moved and affected by one's constituents—can enhance responsiveness to underrepresented groups. I argue that representatives belonging to dominant groups—in Australia white, middle-class, cis men—are less likely to achieve affective receptivity when compared with representatives who are positioned within intersecting structures of discrimination and disadvantage. The article hence underscores the necessity of a political class that reflects the broader population it serves (by gender, race, class, (dis)ability, sexuality and so on), and highlights the dangers of overrepresentation by privileged minorities.

COVID-19 has deeply affected mass gatherings and travel and, in the process, has transformed festivals, festival landscapes, and people's sense of place in relation to such events. In this article we argue that it is important to better understand how people's memories of festival landscapes are affected by these larger shifts. We worked from the premise that information-rich cases could provide some initial insights in this respect. To that end, we interviewed seven individuals who are regular and longstanding in their engagement with festivals in one place, lutruwita/Tasmania, the island state of Australia. Key findings suggest that pandemic experiences mediate the range of meanings participants give to festival landscapes and their interpretations of such landscapes can be described as attachments and detachments, encounters, and reorientations. We conclude by proposing that participants' efforts to draw on memories, reflect on emotional geographies, and recast autobiographies help them adjust to crises, rethink their ways of moving to and from festival sites, and reframe their sense of place in relation to significant cultural events. Such insights have application beyond both the island state and the participants involved.

Atmospheres of the other: Building and feeling Stockholm's orthodox synagogue

In this article, I use the concept of atmosphere to analyse disparate sources related to the process of sacralisation of the orthodox synagogue Adass Jisroel in modern Stockholm. Using the synagogue as an entry point, I explore the affective landscapes related to its unofficially sacred places in firstly a Pietist orphanage and secondly a cinema, and how they shaped inner-communal relations. The material components of Adass Jisroel's sites elicited different emotions from different visiting bodies: its orthodox members aimed to create a space of religious continuity and communal integrity, reformed guests othered the members, while poorer orthodox Jews felt alienated. By analysing these multiple affective experiences linked to material changes of set architectural designs, I outline, for the first time, the orthodox minority's unstable position between fragility and stability in Sweden's capital from 1870 until the 1940s. On a greater scale, through this case study, I propose that the concept of atmosphere provides the field of emotional geography with conceptual muscle to both excavate silenced minority voices, and explore the role of the built environment in eliciting emotions that shape, cement, contest and transform the inner-communal hierarchal landscape that unofficially sacred places are irrevocably situated in.

Psychosocial effects of gentrification on elderly people in Barcelona from the perspective of bereavement

This study explores the effects of gentrification processes on non-displaced seniors. To this end, we conducted a qualitative study, using a cross-sectional phenomenological design. Through 29 semi-structured interviews we analysed the narratives of elderly people with regard to the changes experienced in the Barceloneta neighbourhood of the city of Barcelona, Spain, during the last decades. We interpreted the results from the perspective of grief using as a reference the dual process model of coping with bereavement. Those interviewed reported experiencing losses related to the commercial fabric, community spaces, perceptions of safety and the family or neighbourhood fabric. These losses generate negative effects on health and also weaken the sources of social support that could once have protected against the effects of them. Most of the narratives collected include observations similar to those that occur in bereavement processes that are focused on loss. The results provide further arguments on the need to design urban policies from the perspective of community health, and suggest professional actions aimed at preventing risks to health and social cohesion caused by gentrification processes.
