I confess at the outset that despite wide reading and writing about mixed methods, I have never been clear on what is meant by mixed data and mixed analysis. I have been inclined to define mixed data as naturally co-occurring qualitative and quantitative data like you might see in a list of passengers who died when the Titanic sank where the gender, age, and location of their accommodations revealed the powerful role of gender and social class in who was lost at sea.

In the editorial published in the October 2021 issue of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (Fetters & Molina-Azorin, 2021), we noted several indicators of how the mixed methods field is growing and maturing. This previous editorial focused especially on guidance for using mixed methods from diverse international organizations. In the present editorial we focus on another indicator of the maturity of the field: the books published about mixed methods and books that include substantive content on this methodological approach. While most journal articles focus on research, books play a key role in academia by informing and guiding research as well as facilitating diffusion of knowledge and training about foundational concepts to design, implement, interpret, and disseminate mixed methods studies. Books help promote capacity building for researchers at all stages in their careers from junior to senior scholars. Regarding the number of books specifically about mixed methods research, a previous assessment can be traced to Onwuegbuzie (2012). He identified 31 books written about mixed methods that had been published through 2012. He identified two handbooks (Tashakkori & Teddlie, 2003, 2010) and 29 authored or edited books, e.g., Andrew and Halcomb (2009), Creswell and Plano Clark (2011), Greene, (2007), Mertens (2004), Tashakkori and Teddlie (1998), Teddlie and Tashakkori (2009). Moreover, some books included mixed methods as a part of the book along with quantitative and qualitative approaches (Creswell, 2008; Johnson & Christensen, 2010). In this editorial, we emphasize the growth in number of books published that examine mixed methods research and portray the diversity of these books relative to the types of books by the authors’ roles, the academic and research emphases, the multidisciplinary versus disciplinaryspecific focus, the characterization of mixed methods as one of multiple methodologies or as a combined methodology, and the focus on a specific aspect of mixed methods research. Our intent is not to identify exhaustively all the books published that have a focus, or a substantive part of the content focused on mixed methods research. The calendar turns as humankind begins the year 2022. Until the identification of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, it seemed some semblance of order in the world had begun emerging. The COVID-19 virus continues to mutate and wreak terror across the globe. The world continues to be socially distanced and politically divided along many lines. But within this context, mixed methods researchers continue to innovate procedures for conducting mixed methods research in the quest to address social challenges. This issue of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (JMMR) features multiple breakthroughs for mixed methods research methodology. This issue includes an editorial, three methodological/theoretical articles, four empirical mixed methods methodological articles, and an erratum. In the accompanying editorial, we (Molina-Azorin & Fetters, 2022) provide an estimate of the number of books published that focus on mixed methods research. We note dramatic growth in the sheer number of books in the past three decades as well as the diversity of the books featuring mixed methods research.We identified more than 300 book titles and more than 80% of these were published since 2010. This milestone extends discussion in our last editorial signifying evidence for maturation of the field of mixed methods research in which we examined guidance for using mixed methods research by major public and private organizations globally (Fetters & MolinaAzorin, 2021a). Photograph analysis poses a novel methodological challenge for mixed methods researchers. In this paper, we argue that photographs are a valid data source that are not outside of the quantitative–qualitative binary and, hence, can be analyzed and used for integration, applying mixed methods principles. We summarize photograph analysis methods from different scientific fields and contribute to the field of mixed methods by proposing a mixed methods framework for analyzing visual data that allows the flexible application and integration of different quantitative and qualitative photograph analysis methods by focusing on data transformation. We use an illustrative example from consumer research.

Mixed methods studies in social sciences are predominantly employed to explore broad, complex, and multifaceted issues and to evaluate policies and interventions. The integration of qualitative and quantitative methods in social sciences most often follows the Peircean pragmatic approach—abductive hypothesis formation followed by deductive and inductive testing/confirmation—with limited theorizing properties. This paper contributes to the field of mixed methods research in social sciences by explicating a two-way interaction process between mixed methods data and [social] theory in a pluralistic inferencing approach espoused by critical realism—retroductive theorizing. The paper further illustrates how through retroductive theorizing, critical realism offers a more epistemologically and ontologically grounded alternative for integrating qualitative and quantitative methods compared to pragmatism.

While many advances have been made mixing other methodologies with mixed methods research (MMR), there are few examples of narrative MMR or detailed procedures for integrating the narrative approach into mixed methods studies. This article contributes to the MMR field an example of integrating narratives in MMR by applying a methodological approach that is shaped by stories. The example integrated findings from cancer narratives with survey data to explore emotional support and quality of life of older people living with cancer. Integration was achieved by, firstly, following a thread through the research phases, and secondly, by using joint displays to align findings. The narrative MMR methodology presented is a tool for putting stories at the center of the research process.

Conducting a review of systematic reviews can be challenging, especially when combining systematic quantitative, qualitative and mixed studies reviews. In this methodological discussion paper, we propose (a) a typology for categorizing various types of review of reviews and (b) an exploration of criteria pertaining to three existing critical appraisal tools (ROBIS, AMSTAR 2, and MMSR) to identify those that could be adapted for qualitative and mixed studies reviews. Further work has to be done to develop methodological guidance in conducting, interpreting, and reporting reviews of reviews that combine qualitative and quantitative data.

Content This commentary is in response to Whatley and Stich ’ s (2021) article in which they present an integration of network analyses methods and qualitatively coded data. The lead author of that study participated both in the 2019 American Educational Research Association (AERA) ex-tended professional development workshop where I offered this framework and in the applied seminar on statistical and social network analysis where I developed this framework and began offering it in 2013. In addition to offering this seminar annually for 8 years now and the AERA workshops annually since 2019, I also offered workshops at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2016 and 2017. At least 750 people have participated in these seminars and workshops; additionally, the published manuscript containing this integrative framework (Gonz´alez Canch´e, 2019) has been downloaded over 1300 times. Importantly, the apparent reach of this integrative framework, the positive feedback offered by seminar and workshop participants throughout the years, and the cost-free programming code software used to implement this mixed method research framework (The R Project), the vast majority of workshop attendees have been unable to apply “ Network Analysis of Qualitative Data ” (NAQD) in their own research. These procedures are statistically and computer programming code heavy and require advanced data management and matrix manipulation skills, both of which represent truly dif fi cult barriers for NAQD ’ s mainstream application to qualitative and mixed methods research. Indeed, though all statistical code has been consistently provided to students and workshop attendees throughout the years, only a handful of participants have been able to surpass these remarkable hurdles. We show in this methodological article how formative joint displays can be used to integrate multiple data facets. Joint displays in the published literature are intended to be polished research products that illustrate the connections between quantitative and qualitative inferences. However, we contend using joint displays formatively during analysis can yield more comprehensive metainferences. Accordingly, we introduce a process called joint display coding to formalize the process toward these metainferences. Our approach draws upon the “text-in-context” coding approach and intersects it with a crossover analysis. We showcase an example of joint display coding using a descriptive study of U.S. institutional webpages in higher education. Integrated themes were developed by blending the structural and textual facets of webpage data.
