Business process management and digitalization – a reciprocal relationship 业务流程管理与数字化--一种互惠关系

<h3>Purpose</h3><p>This study investigated the interplay between business process management (BPM) and digitalization in organizations and developed principles for designing their interaction.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>This study was explorative and used a questionnaire-based survey that involved experts in BPM and digitalization who were actively engaged in these two domains in their organizations to come up with the design principles. The survey and the design principles were based on Rosemann and vom Brocke's (2010) six core elements of BPM.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Findings</h3><p>Digitalization was seen as influencing how BPM is practiced in organizations by strengthening organizations’ focus on BPM, and conversely, BPM was perceived as beneficial for digitalization and digitalization outcomes. In addition, based on Rosemann and vom Brocke’s six core elements of BPM, we proposed six principles for designing the interplay of BPM and digitalization in organizations.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Research limitations/implications</h3><p>Our empirical investigation was situated in a Norwegian context and included 104 respondents. While we have no reason to believe that our findings should not be valid and useful in other regions, this is a limitation in generalizing our findings, and a natural follow-up would be to investigate our research questions in other geographical areas. We are also aware of the potential response bias in our sample. Moreover, to outline the principles for designing the interactions of BPM and digitalization, we applied the six core elements of BPM by Rosemann and vom Brocke (2010) as our theoretical lens. We acknowledge that there are more issues related to the interplay of BPM and digitalization than we have dealt with in this study.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Practical implications</h3><p>This study has several implications for organizations. First, managers may use our proposed design principles to decide how to integrate BPM and digitalization. Second, although this study showed that each discipline nurtures its own culture, building an organizational culture that combines values from each discipline can enable a process-oriented organization to innovate its operations and services with digital technology. Third, managers should align the responsibilities and tasks of process owners with the demands for the digitalization of business processes. Purpose

This study aims to determine whether knowledge creation processes (KCPs) – knowledge exchange and knowledge integration affect digital innovation (DI), including information technology (IT)-enabled capabilities (ITECs) as a mediator and absorptive capacity (AC) as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

With a survey data set of 390 employees from Pakistani software small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the current study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using Smart Partial Least Squares to estimate the structural relationships in the conceptual model.

Findings

The results confirm that KCPs – knowledge exchange and knowledge integration positively enhance software SME's DI; ITECs play a partial mediating role in the linkage between KCPs and DI; AC positively moderates the relationship between knowledge integration and ITECs, and ITECs and DI, while AC doesn’t moderate the relationship between knowledge exchange and ITECs. The AC positively moderates the mediating role of ITECs amongst KCPs (knowledge exchange and knowledge integration) and DI, respectively.

Originality/value

This research uniquely integrates the knowledge-based view and dynamic capability theory to present a comprehensive framework that explains the interdependencies between knowledge process, ITECs and AC in driving DI. This approach advances the understanding of how software SMEs can strengthen internal knowledge and IT resources to achieve superior innovation outcomes.

Revisiting the ability of research and development activities to improve value relevance 重新审视研发活动提高价值相关性的能力

Purpose

This article aims to evaluate the informativeness of accruals on stock prices. Investors may misinterpret the information contained in accruals and produce accrual anomalies. Accruals accounting improves the quality of financial statements by providing useful information, although it also contains judgments and is less objective than operating cash-flows.

Design/methodology/approach

We employ data panel regression analysis to investigate the value relevance of financial information. Our study takes the object of companies listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange (NASDAQ) as the representative of the prominent stock exchange for technology-driven enterprises and entrepreneurs. Expanding the findings, we also use Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) data.

Findings

Our research finds that accruals are still relevant. However, firms with R&D expenditures reduce the ability of accruals to explain stock prices for non-technology firms and firms without intangible assets. After analyzing only tech firms (and firms with intangible assets), our tests show that R&D expenditures improve the relevancy of accruals. These findings apply to both Nasdaq and SSE.

Practical implications

Practitioners and the investment community get valuable insights into how the recognition and measurement of R&D expenditures affect the value relevance. Information about R&D increases relevancy only in firms with intangible assets and those that operate in the technology industry.

Originality/value

Our paper provides benefits by using R&D expenses to affect accruals' informativeness by comparing two countries with different recognition of R&D.

Prompt engineering techniques for semantic enhancement in business process models 用于增强业务流程模型语义的即时工程技术

<h3>Purpose</h3><p>The term knowledge refers to the part of the world investigated by a specific discipline and that includes a specific taxonomy, vocabulary, concepts, theories, research methods and standards of justification. Our approach uses domain knowledge to improve the quality of business process models (BPMs) by exploiting the domain knowledge provided by large language models (LLMs). Among these models, ChatGPT stands out as a notable example of an LLM capable of providing in-depth domain knowledge. The lack of coverage presents a limitation in each approach, as it hinders the ability to fully capture and represent the domain’s knowledge. To solve such limitations, we aim to exploit GPT-3.5 knowledge. Our approach does not ask GPT-3.5 to create a visual representation; instead, it needs to suggest missing concepts, thus helping the modeler improve his/her model. The GPT-3.5 may need to refine its suggestions based on feedback from the modeler.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3><p>We initiate our semantic quality enhancement process of a BPM by first extracting crucial elements including pools, lanes, activities and artifacts, along with their corresponding relationships such as lanes being associated with pools, activities belonging to each lane and artifacts associated with each activity. These data are systematically gathered and structured into ArrayLists, a form of organized collection that allows for efficient data manipulation and retrieval. Once we have this structured data, our methodology involves creating a series of prompts based on each data element. We adopt three approaches to prompting: zero-shot, few-shot and chain of thoughts (CoT) prompts. Each type of prompting is specifically designed to interact with the OpenAI language model in a unique way, aiming to elicit a diverse array of suggestions. As we apply these prompting techniques, the OpenAI model processes each prompt and returns a list of suggestions tailored to that specific element of the BPM. Our approach operates independently of any specific notation and offers semi-automation, allowing modelers to select from a range of suggested options.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Findings</h3><p>This study demonstrates the significant potential of prompt engineering techniques in enhancing the semantic quality of BPMs when integrated with LLMs like ChatGPT. Our analysis of model activity richness and model artifact richness across different prompt techniques and input configurations reveals that carefully tailored prompts can lead to more complete BPMs. This research is a step forward for further exploration into the optimization of LLMs in BPM development.</p><!--/ Abstract__block --><h3>Research limitations/implications</h3><p>The limitation is the domain ontology that we are relying on to evaluate the semantic completeness of the new BPM. In our future work, the modeler will have the option to ask for synonyms, hyponyms, hypernym

Purpose

This study examines the link between the knowledge creation process, ambidextrous innovation, and competitive advantage. Further, this study also tested the moderating role of organizational agility on the relationship between the knowledge creation process and ambidextrous innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical study’s data were collected by surveying 306 respondents employed in 140 Pakistani Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The questionnaire was designed according to the study’s requirements and was based on theoretical knowledge and findings from previous research on the knowledge-creation process, ambidextrous innovation, and competitive advantage. All hypotheses were tested using a structured regression method.

Findings

The study indicates that the knowledge creation process significantly impacts a firm’s competitive advantage. Additionally, this study demonstrates that ambidextrous innovation can moderate the relationship between the knowledge-creation process and competitive advantage.

Research limitations/implications

Future studies should examine mediating factors, such as organizational culture, leadership style, and industry characteristics, as well as moderating variables, such as environmental turbulence.

Practical implications

This study guides SME leaders on the importance of knowledge creation and ambidextrous innovation in achieving operational success and gaining a competitive advantage.

Originality/value

This study explores how the knowledge creation process directly and indirectly, enhances organizational capacity for competitive advantage through the mediating roles of ambidextrous innovation and the moderating role of organizational agility.

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between market culture and innovation performance and to reveal the role of absorptive capacity and resistance to change by building on the resource-based view.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was gathered from 222 firm managers of manufacturing firms by using the survey method. Structural equation modeling and PROCESS macro were used to analyze the data.

Findings

The results indicate that market culture is positively related to innovation performance and absorptive capacity mediates this relationship. It is also found that resistance to change negatively moderates the relationship between market culture and innovation performance, but it has no moderating effect on the relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation performance.

Originality/value

Previous research examining the association between market culture and innovation performance is scarce and provides contradictory findings. This indicates that there is an underlying mechanism of this association neglected before. This study is an attempt to reconcile contradictory findings and enlighten the fuzzy areas of this relationship. Accordingly, this study focuses on absorptive capacity as a mediator and proves its role empirically. Moreover, this study is the first to examine the role of resistance to change and demonstrates its buffer role in the market culture-innovation performance link. It is also revealed that resistance to change does not moderate the relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation performance. The findings elucidate the underlying mechanism of the relationship between market culture and innovation performance, reconcile contradictory findings of extant research, expand the current knowledge, and provide practical implications.

Purpose

Technology uptake in supply chains frequently encounters challenges when immediate, tangible benefits are not evident. Therefore, this article's central objective is to pinpoint the risks affecting the integration of supply chain technologies for enduring outcomes. Subsequently, these risks will be organized into a hierarchical structure, facilitating a clearer comprehension of their direct and indirect interconnections.

Design/methodology/approach

A combined TISM and quantitative approach has been used to build the hierarchal structure and to validate the direct, and indirect relationship among risks adopting supply chain technologies. A total of 41 respondents participated in the TISM survey, which resulted in creating a level hierarchical structure. Further, 233 responses are used for the quantitative study using SEM to validate the model obtained from TISM.

Findings

The study's findings indicated the social risks come out with the highest driving power. This includes the fear of job displacement, community disparity and change in the work culture of an organization. At the same time, technological risks can cause system integration, scalability issues, obsolesce compatibility issues, system failures and supply chain sustainability issues.

Originality/value

The novelty of the study can be found in the developed framework and its subsequent confirmation via quantitative evaluation. TISM provides the theoretical foundation, while a quantitative investigation is carried out to verify this theory.

Purpose

It is crucial to transform current enterprises to greener versions of them to reach the sustainable development goals. The first step of this transformation can be understanding comprehensively environmental performances of enterprises. This study presents a practical analysis for evaluation of factors affecting environmental performance of enterprises to call them as a “dark green.”

Design/methodology/approach

For this purpose, a detailed factor search was primarily performed and then the weights of them on environmental performance of the enterprises to support sustainable development were analyzed using fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) that incorporates the casual relationships between factors and represents the dynamics of the complex systems. The FCM was also supported with extended great deluge algorithm (EGDA), which is an evolutionary algorithm with high performance to increase robustness of the study.

Findings

The findings indicated that the most influential factors on environmental performance of an activist enterprise are “loyalty to regulations,” “digitalization level,” “tendency to produce environmentally friendly products/services,” “productivity efforts” and “fossil fuel consumption,” respectively. While the first four of them affect the environmental performance positively, fossil fuel consumption affects it negatively.

Practical implications

The results of this study can help companies to prioritize the critical points for their environmental perspectives, observe at which factors they are good or lacking and find where to start improvement.

Originality/value

This study is one of the pioneering studies to investigate the importance of criteria for a dark green business, considering 21 factors from different sources to make a detailed representation of corporate environmental sustainability.

The first step of this transformation can be understanding comprehensively environmental performances of enterprises. This study presents a practical analysis for evaluation of factors affecting environmental performance of enterprises to call them as a “dark green.”</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Design/methodology/approach</h3>\u0000<p>For this purpose, a detailed factor search was primarily performed and then the weights of them on environmental performance of the enterprises to support sustainable development were analyzed using fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) that incorporates the casual relationships between factors and represents the dynamics of the complex systems. The FCM was also supported with extended great deluge algorithm (EGDA), which is an evolutionary algorithm with high performance to increase robustness of the study.</p><!--/ Abstract__block -->\u0000<h3>Findings</h3>\u0000<p>The findings indicated that the most influential factors on environmental performance of an activist enterprise are “loyalty to regulations,” “digitalization level,” “tendency to produce environmentally friendly products/services,” “productivity efforts” and “fossil fuel consumption,” respectively. SMEs internationalization! Market intelligence and entrepreneurial orientation influence on international performance: a moderation model 中小企业国际化!市场情报和创业导向对国际化绩效的影响:一个调节模型

Purpose

Drawing on resource-orchestration theory (ROT), this study investigates the influence of market intelligence and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on international performance of born global (BG) small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in emerging markets with the mediating role of global technological competence. Quality focus is used as a moderator between global technological competence and international performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were gathered through a survey, and PLS-SEM was employed for hypotheses testing with a sample of 256 BG SMEs.

Findings

The results showed that market intelligence, EO, global technological competence and quality focus positively relate to international performance. Moreover, market intelligence and EO are positively associated with global technological competence. Besides, global technological competence significantly mediates the relationship between market intelligence, EO and international performance. Finally, quality focus strengthens the positive relationship between global technological competence and international performance.

Practical implications

Our research demonstrates that if management utilizes or invests on market intelligence, EO, global technological competence and quality focus, then the BG SMEs will increase their international performance.

Originality/value

The paper contribution lies in its focus on exogenous constructs (i.e. market intelligence, EO, global technological competence and quality focus) to determine the international performance of born global SMEs in emerging markets.

Purpose

This study explores the consequences of digitalization in the field of education, particularly in relation to teachers’ course processes in higher education institutions. It emphasizes the importance of understanding how information systems (IS) support not only individual tasks but also processes as a whole. The results reveal that process practices have not been considered comprehensively and even core processes may be unseen.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review was conducted to explore the extent to which teachers’ processes are discussed in the literature. A qualitative case study was then conducted at a Finnish higher education institution to identify course processes and their relationships to IS.

Findings

Teachers’ processes have scarcely been discussed in the literature, and the process support provided by ISs is remarkably limited. It seems that course processes, which are core to education, are a blind spot in education digitalization. To support evaluating the level of support by IS, novel course process indicators were introduced.

Practical implications

Developing core processes, teachers’ course processes and thesis processes in education field, supports improving service quality. In all industries, organizations should consider whether processes are properly recognized and whether IS support not only individual tasks but also processes as a whole. We recommend recognizing and applying business process management practices to better support teachers’ work and to improve overall efficiency in education.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first education sector study that attends to teacher’s work as a comprehensive process.
