Our study aimed to understand the link between baseline vitamin D levels at admission and in-hospital clinical outcome and 7-month all-cause mortality in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Sixty-three percent of 636 Iranian patients had insufficient 25(OH)vitamin D baseline levels (<30 ng/mL) on admission. All patients were followed for 7 months on average. Insufficient baseline levels of vitamin D were associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality (P = .022), 7-month all-cause mortality (P = .047), and multiple-organ damage (P = .035) in patients with COVID-19. No association between other in-hospital complications and 25(OH)vitamin D levels was found.

We aimed to investigate the relationship between disease severity and nutrition status through subjective global assessment (SGA) in men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A total of 80 stable male subjects with COPD (20 in each group) were included in the study according to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 2011 classification (A, B, C, and D). Nutritional assessment was performed using SGA as the gold standard. It was determined that 55.6% of the patients with severe malnutrition were in group D. SGA appears to represent a useful method for identifying ambulatory patients in need of comprehensive nutrition assessment and support.

Due to the potential role of selenium in enhancing the immune system, a cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the association between selenium serum levels, mortality rate, and inflammatory and immunity factors in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. A total 179 patients (60.3% male) with COVID-19 were enrolled into this study. The serum level of selenium was significantly correlated with white blood cell count, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in patients with COVID-19. No significant association was seen between serum selenium levels and IL-6, IFN-γ, and mortality rate.

This study investigated the sports nutrition knowledge and breakfast consumption habits and beliefs in adults who regularly exercise. Participants (N = 404) identifying as athletes (n = 47), former athletes (n = 65), and nonathletes (n = 292) completed a survey. Sports nutrition knowledge was inadequate (52% correct); former athletes scored better than nonathletes (62% vs 49%). The Internet was the primary source of information (35%); 4% of participants consulted registered dietitians. Approximately 40% of participants do not eat before exercise and those who do consume fruit/fruit juice or meal replacement bars. This study indicates a need for more accessible and reliable nutrition information for exercisers.

The gut microbiome develops in prenatal life and progresses through infancy and childhood. Identified factors that impact the quantity, quality, and diversity of the early gut microbiome include mode of delivery, early diet, environmental exposures, disease conditions, and treatment. Optimal gut health in childhood is impacted by microbiome stability and diversity. This narrative review provides an overview of the important factors including genetic, epigenetic, nutritional, and environmental exposures, playing a foundational role in establishing the early gut microbiome during the critical first “1000 days” of human life and its impact on pediatric obesity, allergy, and gastrointestinal disease.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated predictors of malnutrition and to assess the ability of nurses to recognize malnutrition among elderly hospitalized patients in King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 100 patients 60 years or older were recruited. Nurses were asked whether they considered patients as malnourished or not and their answers were then compared with the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) scores for the same patients. According to the MNA-SF, 27% and 48% of the patients were malnourished and at risk of malnutrition, respectively. Only 11% of the patients with poor nutritional status were recognized by the nurses.

We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using handgrip strength (HGS) in determining malnutrition in adolescents. Sixty-two participants (10–18 years of age), 33 malnourished and 29 healthy participants, were recruited. A questionnaire was administered, and anthropometric parameters and HGS were measured. Dominant HGS was different in children with (11.6 ± 5.8 nkgF) or without (21.6 ± 5.7 kgF) malnutrition ( P < .001). Body mass index, triceps/biceps skinfold, neck/waist/wrist circumferences, and arm muscle area were correlated with HGS. According to receiver operating characteristic analysis, dominant (area under the curve [AUC]: 85.9%), and nondominant HGSs (AUC: 83.9%) were possible predictors for malnutrition. HGS may be used as a tool for malnutrition assessment in adolescents.

This study was conducted on 98 children with confirmed COVID-19 and 2112 patients in a healthy control group. Serum vitamin D levels were significantly lower in the patients with confirmed COVID-19 than in the control group (10.9 ng/dL vs 16.1 ng/dL; P < .001). Almost 65% of patients with inadequate serum vitamin D levels had symptomatic COVID-19, and 30% of patients with adequate vitamin D levels had symptomatic COVID-19 ( P = .043). In the logistic model, inadequate vitamin D status was associated with symptomatic COVID-19 compared with asymptomatic COVID-19 (odds ratio = 4032; 95% confidence interval, 1.036-17.776; P = .045).

We aimed to assess the nutritional status at diagnosis and during the follow-up of gluten free diet (GFD) therapy among 127 children with celiac disease (CD) in comparison with 127 controls. The median body mass index of children with CD was significantly lower than that of controls. At the time of diagnosis, children with CD had a significantly higher rate of undernutrition, with underweight (37.8%), height insufficiency (54.3%), and thinness (22%). During GFD follow-up, we noticed a significant decrease in thinness ( P = .047) and a moderate increase in obesity. This emphasizes the role of the dietitian in implementing a nutritionally balanced diet.
