This cross-sectional study of 341 women in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, compared a 1-point-in-time vitamin D intake measurement assessed by the Semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire with bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and femur in pre- and post-menopausal women. Premenopausal women had significantly higher BMD at the lumbar spine and femur compared with postmenopausal women (P < .01). A significant positive association was seen between dietary vitamin D intake (95.5 ± 81.54 IU/day) and femur BMD at the trochanter (P < .05). Vitamin D intake of Saudi women is inadequate, suggesting the need for public health measures to promote improved nutrition in women and support an expansion of fortification programs.

The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the impact of the RELiZORB immobilized lipase cartridge with overnight enteral nutrition (EN) on body mass index (BMI) or weight-for-length percentile, stool quality, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and pancreatic insufficiency. Frequency of diarrhea, steatorrhea, and malodorous stools significantly decreased at final visit compared with baseline (P = .008, P = .004, P = .031, respectively). Improved BMI or weight-for-length percentile was observed in 10 out of 16 participants; however, the change was not significant. RELiZORB use decreased frequency of most GI symptoms in pediatric patients with CF on EN.

We compared the “Boden Food Plate,” an online dietary assessment tool, with 24-hour recalls. Forty-two adults with body mass index of 25 kg/m2 or more completed 2 to 3 days' intake on the “Boden Food Plate” and 2 dietitian-administered 24-hour recalls. The mean differences between the 2 methods for energy, macronutrients, and micronutrients were predominantly not statistically significant. Moderate to high correlation was observed between the 2 methods, with the exception of protein and iron intakes. Bland-Altman plots for energy, carbohydrates, fat, and protein indicated wide limits of agreement between the 2 methods. The “Boden Food Plate” is comparable with 24-hour recall but with wide limits of agreement.

Adults with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) may experience enteral nutrition (EN) intolerance. They often require mechanical ventilation and other specialized management including prone positioning. There is a controversy as to whether patients fed in prone position experience more EN intolerance than when they are in supine position. This narrative review synthesizes the literature published between 2001 and 2021 in adults with ARDS who are fed EN while in the prone position to determine safety and tolerance. A case of an adult patient with Down syndrome who developed ARDS due to COVID-19 and required EN while in prone position is presented.

This study examined dietetics students' perceptions of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic impacts on academics and mental and physical health. Data were collected via a cross-sectional online survey in February to March 2021 from undergraduate dietetics students across the United States. Among the 526 students who participated, during the fall 2020 semester, 87% experienced increased stress, 64% reported mental health concerns, and 32% reported disordered eating. Sixty-two percent agreed their program met educational needs; however, 62% also agreed COVID-19 negatively impacted the quality of education and 49% agreed to learning less than normal. Pandemic impacts are critical to consider as students enter dietetic internships and start careers.

Medical nutrition therapy may have a key role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the spread of misinformation, the present review organizes and summarizes nutrition recommendations regarding COVID-19, serving as a reference guide for health professionals. Nineteen official recommendations were included of international, US, Asian, European, Canadian, and Australian origin on (i) lactation, (ii) nutrition during quarantine, (iii) nutrition in high-risk groups, (iv) nutrition for recovery at home, and (v) nutrition in hospital. Breastfeeding is encouraged, and the role of hydration and the adoption of a healthy diet during quarantine are emphasized. Older people and/or people with comorbidities should be checked for malnutrition and follow a healthy diet. For patients recovering at home, hydration, protein, and energy intake should be ensured. For hospitalized patients, early feeding with a priority on enteral route is recommended.

Immunomodulatory Effects of Vitamin D and Prevention of Respiratory Tract Infections and COVID-19.
IF 0.5 4区 医学 Q4 NUTRITION & DIETETICS Pub Date : 2022-07-01 Epub Date: 2022-06-22 DOI: 10.1097/TIN.0000000000000284

Little is known about potential protective factors for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), referred to as COVID-19. Suboptimal vitamin D status is a risk factor for immune dysfunction, respiratory tract infections (RTIs), and viral infections. Supplementation of vitamin D (2000-4000 IU) has decreased incidence and complications from RTIs, respiratory distress syndrome, and pneumonia and may be beneficial in high-risk populations. Given the possible link between low vitamin D status and RTIs, such as COVID-19, this review examined whether vitamin D supplementation can be supported as a nutritional strategy for reducing risk of infection, complications, and mortality from COVID-19 and found that the relationship between vitamin D and RTIs warrants further exploration.

Objective: The purpose of the study is to investigate the clinical efficacy and long-term prognosis of acupuncture (AP) combined with atorvastatin (ATO) in treating senile essential hypertension (EH) complicated with carotid atherosclerosis (CA).

Methods: 108 elderly EH patients with CA admitted to our hospital between January 2018 and September 2018 were enrolled into the study, consisting of 67 patients who received treatment of AP with ATO (AP + ATO group) and 41 patients who received treatment of ATO alone (ATO group). Comparative outcomes included clinical efficacy, blood pressure (BP), the levels of blood lipids and inflammatory factors, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), the number of unstable carotid intima plaques, the carotid plaque area, and the incidence of adverse reactions. All patients were followed up for 3 years to evaluate their quality of life and the recurrence rate of CA.

Results: The AP + ATO group presented a higher efficacy, a declined BP, and lower posttreatment levels of blood lipids and inflammatory factors than the ATO group (P < 0.05). Reductions were observed in IMT, number of plaques, and plaque area in both groups after treatment, with more significant improvements in the AP + ATO group (P < 0.05). No difference was observed in the incidence of adverse reactions between two groups after treatment (P > 0.05). The follow-up analysis demonstrated a higher SF-36 score and a lower recurrence rate of CA in the AP + ATO group than the ATO group (P < 0.05).

Conclusion: The findings suggested that, for elderly EH patients with CA, treatment of AP with ATO offers better clinical efficacy and safety, which not only can decline the BP, but also can reduce blood lipids and plaque formation, and improve quality of life.
