Abstract Individuals in occupational settings are often exposed to moderate levels (e.g., < 85 dBA) of background noise (i.e., broadband noise) while performing cognitive-based tasks. Exposure to such noise may affect individuals’ cognitive performance and thus affect desired performance level (e.g., safety performance). The present review outlines the effect of moderate broadband noise on indices of cognition such as reaction time, attention, short-term and long-term memory, and high(er)-order cognitive tasks such as decision-making, mental arithmetic, grammatic reasoning, or reading comprehension. The present review highlights limitations associated with moderators, and their effect on broadband noise. 43 studies ranging from 1980 to February 2023 were selected and analysed to investigate this issue. Reviewed results offered minimal evidence for a negative effect of moderate broadband noise on cognitive performance. Negative effects that were found, were often evident only under specific circumstances. The roles of cognitive load, repeated session, and individual differences (e.g., sex) were found to differ from theoretical predictions based on evidence from broader noise(s), which highlights the distinctive characteristics of the mild stressor; hence an area for future research.

Abstract Sustainable Employability (SE) and task performance of workers-collaborating-with-cobots is challenged. Whether SE policies can impact workers’ task performance in digitalized workplaces is still unknown. Drawing on two SE models, this study aims to ascertain whether the relationship between SE policies and task performance is mediated by health and productive capabilities, and whether this effect is moderated by the levels of User Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) predictors. 88 employees collaborating with cobots, or expected to do so in the near future, answered a cross-sectional survey. SE policies were positively related to task performance via health and productive capabilities. This indirect effect was moderated by the levels of UTAUT predictors, being significant only at low or medium levels of the moderators. SE policies contribute to employee capabilities, and in turn to workers’ task performance. Fostering health and productive capabilities is fundamental when employee levels of cobots’ acceptance are not high yet.

Abstract This article analyses how implementation and use of digital technologies involve changes in work content, organization, and management in the petroleum industry. This is important, given that the industry is in a phase with mature technology and heavy pressure on efficiency and cost-effectiveness, at the same time as older systems and work processes prevail. The article draws on data acquired through interviews in a number of companies, organizations and specialist teams. The results show that far-reaching digitalization will mean radical changes to the way employees and managers work. The level of success in using digital technologies can be related to the ability to alter the content and form of work and expertise requirements, while retaining trust in technology and coping with uncertainty. A key conclusion is that clarifications related to work processes, roles, and responsibilities between the various actors in the supply chain are the most significant obstacles to successful technology adoption.

Abstract A pilot's control behavior has a direct impact on aviation safety. To adapt to new flight training reforms, a competency-based assessment method is proposed in this paper. First, assessment scenarios, key competencies and observable behaviours were determined. Then, observable behavior assessment indexes were developed based on standard operating procedures and practical examination standards. Flight training data were analyzed based on curve similarity theory and a time series fast retrieval algorithm, and the assessment indexes were scored. The competency assessment method was established by quantifying “HOW MANY” and “HOW OFTEN” observable behaviors according to the assessment indexes score results. Finally, the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm was used to classify the assessment values, and assessment results were obtained. A teardrop pattern procedure was used to test the reliability of the assessment method. The results indicate that the correlation coefficient between the model evaluation and the expert evaluation is 0.947 with a significance level of 0.01, reliably and objectively quantifying manual flight performance and improving the scientific nature of manual flight performance assessment methods. Flight training institutions can use this method to establish diverse assessment scenarios and formulate corresponding assessment indexes based on the characteristics of each pilot to reasonably evaluate the manual flight performance of pilot. Targeted training methods can then be adopted for pilot with different performance levels to improve their competency.
