Hermeneutics is an important philosophical mode of inquiry where discipline-specific theories and methodologies provide important windows of understanding of human experiences. The author in this article discusses the embedded truths of ethics found in the formal inquiry where human living quality phenomena are highlighted. The valuable insights and the importance to the future of the discipline of nursing focus on ideas for suggested further study.

Hiding is a universal humanuniverse living experience and is significant in living quality. This is the first humanbecoming inquiry into the living experience of hiding. Parsesciencing, a phenomenological-hermeneutic mode of inquiry within the humanbecoming paradigm, was used for this investigation. The investigation included 10 historians between the ages of 34 and 76 years who were willing to share their experiences of hiding. The inquiry stance was as follows: What is the discerning extant moment of the universal humanuniverse living experience of hiding? The major discovery of this inquiry was the discerning extant moment: Hiding is fortifying vigilance emerging with a welcoming shelter of ingenious maneuvers of not-letting-know-letting-know while distancing from involvements.

Describing resilience as a concept builds upon adaptive knowledge, inspiring further nursing research. A thematic integrative literature review using "resilience" as the keyword was conducted spanning nursing, psychology, and social work using EBSCOHost, CINAHL, Cochrane, Medline, and PsychINFO. The Roy adaptation model served as the nursing theoretical perspective for this inquiry. The Walker and Avant method was used and served to further the inquiry into what resilience means. Three attributes emerged from the review of literature and included (a) effective coping, (b) balanced response to hardship, and (c) rebound from threatening stimuli. Several quantitative scales that exist to measure resilience helped to shape its description in the context of nursing, including the 25-Item Resilience Scale. Further exploration is needed to operationalize resilience as a concept so that it may be understood as a phenomenon to build upon the existing nursing knowledge within the discipline.

Early on, Martha E. Rogers called for innovative new research methods unique to the unitary worldview introduced by her science of unitary human beings. This column provides a critique of two qualitative research methods crafted specifically for this science, introduced by Judith T. Carboni and Howard K. Butcher. Neonatal nurses provide highly specialized care to critically ill preterm infants who endure frequent painful procedures. Despite evidence of effective strategies to manage pain, pain continues to be undertreated. Caring science offers a mature disciplinary foundation as a guide to professional practice. The aim of this paper is to utilize a caring science framework to help guide nurses to offer authentic neonatal care through the creation of a caring relationship and environment for promoting optimal pain assessment and management practices in preterm infants.
