The incidence of insomnia is increasing, and acupuncture is known to have a favorable therapeutic effect on insomnia, but its treatment mechanism is unclear. Patients with insomnia were recruited and randomly divided into an acupuncture treatment group and a control group using a single-blind, random number table. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) score, sleep-related parameters (SE, SA, and TST), and levels of inflammatory response factors IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were analyzed. The baseline data of the two groups were not significantly different and were comparable. Acupuncture treatment significantly improved patient PSQI (P < 0.05) and ISI scores (P < 0.05), as well as SE, SA, and TST (P < 0.05). Levels of TNF-α and IL-1β were increased (all P < 0.05), while IL-6 levels were decreased (P < 0.05), lasting for at least 4 weeks. Acupuncture treatment can increase the serum levels of TNF-α and IL-1β, decrease IL-6 levels, and improve insomnia symptoms.

Objectives: In the present study, we assessed the therapeutic qualities of the combination of acupuncture with Western medicine to determine further lines of clinical research. Methods: We searched English-language databases and Chinese-language databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to February 2020. Two reviewers performed a meta-analysis of the efficacy and toxicity of the use of acupuncture with Western medicine for RA measured by a visual analogue scale (VAS), rheumatoid factor (RF), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Results: In total, 9 RCTs involving 698 patients were included for analysis. VAS, ESR, CRP, and RF were all shown to favor the combination of acupuncture with Western medicine compared to Western medicine alone. ST36 (Zusanli), EX-UE9 (Baxie), Ll11 (Quchi), GB34 (Yanglingquan), TE14 (Jianliao) and TE4(Yangchi) were frequently used in 9 clinical trials. Conclusion: Treatment using acupuncture with Western medicine was associated with higher efficacy and lower risks than treatment with Western medicine alone. ST36 (Zusanli), EX-UE9 (Baxie), Ll11 (Quchi), GB34 (Yanglingquan), TE14 (Jianliao) and TE4 (Yangchi) were frequently used in treatment of RA and had been verified with effect in clinical practice.

Purpose: Acupuncture treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has a long history and has been widely recognized in the medical community. However, its mechanism of action still is rarely uncovered. In the present study, the effects of acupuncture on the immune function and MAPK pathway in synovial tissue of rats with RA were investigated; it aimed to explore the effect and mechanism of acupuncture on alleviating RA. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into control, model and acupuncture groups, 15 rats each group, and RA rat model was induced via bovine type II collagen in complete Freund’s adjuvant. The acupuncture group received "Zusanli" and "Shenshu" warm acupuncture treatment on the first day after modeling, acupuncture stimulation once a day for 21 days. The rat weight and degree of joint swelling were recorded and calculated. The ankle joint histopathology was observed by H&E staining. Serum inflammatory cytokines were detected using ELISA. An automatic biochemical analyzer was used to test serum IgG, IgM and IgA levels. Transcription factors T-bet, GATA3, RORγT, Foxp3 mRNA were monitored through RT-qPCR technology. Further, the expression of key targets of MAPK signal or phosphorylation in synovial tissue were determined using Western blotting. Results: Acupuncture relieved the joint swelling and weight loss of RA rats, ameliorated the pathological damage of the ankle joint, significantly increased the serum IgG, IgM, IgA and T-bet, and Foxp3 levels, and reduced the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, GATA3, and RORγT; down-regulated synovial tissue p-p38MAPK, p-JNK, and p-ERK1/2 levels and protein phosphorylation ratio (P<0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture stimulation can improve the joint damage and promote the immune function of RA rats, possibly via blocking the expression of MAPK pathway in synovial tissue. This study provides a scientific and promising reference for acupuncture further in the clinical strategy of RA.

Objective:This study aims to use loperamide by gavage in SD rats to establish the model of STC, and evaluate the degree of similarity between the model and clinical diseases. Furthermore, the effect of electro-acupuncture when stimulating BL32 acupoints in SD rats with slow transit constipation were observed to determine changes in intestinal transmission function. Methods:Thirty SD rats were selected and divided randomly into three groups. Rats in the model group were given 2 mg/kg/d of loperamide tablets by gavage for 15 days. The morphology of the feces of rats was observed, and the dry weight of the feces and the time of first black feces movement with black ink by gavage after molding were measured. After 20 days of electro-acupuncture treatment at the BL32 acupoint, the time of first black feces movement, the ratio of black ink length of the entire length of the intestine, and contraction amplitude and frequency of contraction were measured. Results: The time of black feces movement in the two model groups was significantly prolonged (P<0.05).Furthermore, fecal grains, dry weight and moisture content were significantly reduced (P<0.05). On the 10thand 20thday of treatment, the time of black feces movementin the treatment group significantly decreased (P<0.05). The ratio of black ink length of the entire length of the intestine in the electro-acupuncture group was significantly higher than that in the model group (P<0.05). Moreover, contraction amplitude was significantly higher than in the model control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Through loperamide gavage, the model of slow transit constipation in SD rats was successfully established in a relatively short period of time. Electro-acupuncture treatment had a rapid onset of action, and its mechanism might have been caused through strengthening the ability of intestinal smooth muscle contraction, and are independent with increased smooth muscle contraction frequency.

The ratio of black ink length of the entire length of the intestine in the electro-acupuncture group was significantly higher than that in the model group (P<0.05). Moreover, contraction amplitude was significantly higher than in the model control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Through loperamide gavage, the model of slow transit constipation in SD rats was successfully established in a relatively short period of time. Electro-acupuncture treatment had a rapid onset of action, and its mechanism might have been caused through strengthening the ability of intestinal smooth muscle contraction, and are independent with increased smooth muscle contraction frequency.","PeriodicalId":50881,"journal":{"name":"Acupuncture & Electro-Therapeutics Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69699763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate for evidence of the association of acupuncture with relieving the symptoms of adenomyosis. We searched ten electronic databases and included randomized controlled trials(RCTs) in women with adenomyosis. The methodological quality was moderate evidence level by Cochrane risk-of-bias criteria. The results were analyzed by Review Manager 5.3 and expressed as standardized mean differences (SMD) or mean differences (MD). Eleven RCTs (942 subjects) were included in this meta-analysis. Analysis with no heterogeneity showed that acupuncture group obtained a significant better effect (95% CI,-0.48 to-0.10; I²= 0%) on reducing the size of the uterus and was superior in the shrink of carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) level (95% CI,-1.13 to-0.44; I² =0%) than that in pharmacological medicine alone group. Moreover, acupuncture was significantly associated with improving patients’ dysmenorrheal symptoms after 3-month menstrual cycles treatment (95% CI,-1.09to-0.06).The adverse events, especially the incidence of hot flashes, were less reported in acupuncture group compared to pharmacological medicine alone group (Odds Ratio, OR, 0.17; 95% CI, 0.08 to 0.35;I²= 0%).Acupuncture therapy is a promising avenue for the development of alternatives to surgery and medicine in the treatment of adenomyosis. However, further rigorous trials are needed to confirm the claims of our results.

The purpose of this trial was to examine the effect of acupuncture combined with 90 days’ NBP continuous habitual therapy and routine rehabilitation training could more effectively improve the physical movement, life activities, cognitive and psychological disorders of stroke patients. Our trial was a double-center trial and retrospective cohort study. The Acupuncture group received additional bedside acupuncture treatment and was given NBP injection 100ml twice a day in the first 14 days, and Sequential NBP soft capsule 200mg three times a day in the next 76 days. The No Acupuncture group only received conventional rehabilitation treatment. Primary outcomes were NIHSS, ADL and mRS which were evaluated in 6 months. Secondary outcomes included MMSE, MoCA, HAMA and HAMD; all were evaluated in 6 months. And the adverse reaction or other serious adverse events were evaluated at each time. We found that this therapy could significantly increase the scores of ADL, MMSE, MoCA, decreased the scores of NIHSS, mRS and the incidence of HAMA, HAMD of patients with ischemic stroke (P<0.05), which indicated that comprehensive rehabilitation of acupuncture as an additional therapy combined with the 90 days’ NBP sequential therapy could improve the cognitive, psychological and behavioral functions of ischemic stroke without significant side effect.

Postoperative pain cannot be treated adequately in all patients, even though there are new developments in analgesic agents and treatment techniques. Thisstudy investigates the effect of pre-incisional and post-incisional electro- acupuncture on mechanical hyperalgesia in rat incisional pain model. This study was carried out with 40 healthy Sprague-Dawley male rats. The rats were divided into 5 groups: Group 1; first electro-acupuncture, then incision. Group 2; first incision, then electro-acupuncture. Group 3; first sham electro-acupuncture, then incision. Group 4; first incision, then sham electro-acupuncture. Group 5; control (incision only). Electro-acupuncture was applied to the ST36 and SP6 acupuncture points on the right hind paw. Sham electro- acupuncture was applied to the right thigh. Von Frey filaments were used to measure hyperalgesia at baseline and at 4th, 6th, 24th and 48th hours. Shapiro Wilk test was used to determine whether the distribution of continuous variables was close to normal. Levene's test was used for homogeneity of variances. Bonferroni Correction Wilcoxon Sign test was used to determine whether the differences between follow-up times were statistically significant or not. Bonferroni Correction on Kruskal Wallis test was used to determine whether there was any difference between groups. If the Kruskal Wallis test statistics were significant, analysis was performed using Conover's multiple comparison test. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. This study found that electro-acupuncture decreases hyperalgesia, and there was no significant difference between pre-incisional and post-incisional application in terms of the anti-hyperalgesic effectiveness of electro-acupuncture, except for the duration of action. Pre-incisional applications are more effective than post-incisional applications. Pre-incisional sham electro-acupuncture has also been found to have anti-hyperalgesic effect. Our findings support the studies that electro-acupuncture can be used for preemptive purposes in surgical patients. We think that researches should be continued in order to provide alternative methods for pain treatment.

Objective: The resonance frequency (Fr) of twelve meridians was observed by means of sweep frequency of weak constant current, and a method of evaluating Fr was explored. Method: Four-electrode bioimpedance spectroscopy was used in the study. Constant current of 1~100Hz was applied from a phase-locked amplifier through the excitation electrode to the twelve meridians of 30 healthy subjects. Data were collected by the test electrode and the Fr of the twelve meridians was obtained by data fitting in Matlab. Result: Among the twelve meridians, the Fr of the small intestine meridian is the lowest, and the gallbladder meridian is the highest, which are 23.18±0.99Hz and 28.27±1.39 Hz, respectively. The mean resonance frequencies of meridians of the same name on hand and foot are 24.80±1.34Hz and 26.22±1.17Hz, respectively. The Fr of the Shao Yin meridian of the hands and feet is basically equal, the other five pairs of foot meridians are all higher than the hand meridian, and the difference of the Yang meridian of the same name is greater than the Yin meridian of the same name, the Fr of hand Shao Yang meridian, hand Tai Yang meridian and hand Yang Ming meridian were lower than those of foot meridians. The mean value of 6 pairs of yin and yang meridians are 25.59 ± 1.97Hz and 25.42 ± 0.70Hz, respectively. Conclusion: The resonance frequencies of the twelve meridians ranged from 23 to 28Hz approximately.
