(Abstracted from Lancet 2023;402:54–61) Inherited thrombophilia is implicated as a cause of recurrent pregnancy loss, defined as the loss of 2 or more pregnancies. Heparin is the standard treatment for acquired thrombophilia but is not recommended in cases of recurrent pregnancy loss and inherited thrombophilia.

(Abstracted from N Engl J Med 2023;389:11–21) Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a serious complication of childbirth, and delays in diagnosis and treatment can cause major complications or fatalities. One method of early detection is a blood-collection drape, possibly in conjunction with other tests and treatments.

(Abstracted from Nat Med 2023;29:1692–1699) Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), defined as the loss of ovarian activity and permanent cessation of menstruation occurring before age 40 years, affects 1% of women and is a leading cause of infertility. Up to 90% of POI cases are idiopathic, with up to 30% of those having some familial association, suggesting a genetic basis.

(Abstracted from Contraception 2023;126:110116) Obstetric care in the United States is predominantly paid for by Medicaid, which covers nearly half of all births. An essential component of comprehensive obstetric care is legal, safe abortion, and restricted access to such procedures is related to increased maternal mortality and morbidity.

(Abstracted from Fertil Steril 2023;120(4):850–859) Uterine müllerian anomalies (UMAs) are anatomic malformations of the female genital tract found in 5.5% of the general population but 24.5% of women with a history of miscarriage and infertility. Studies identifying the relationships between UMAs and reproductive outcomes suggest a higher rate of adverse outcomes but have largely been conducted in women using their own oocytes and have focused on a single anomaly category.
