In October 1982, Itaipu Dam’s reservoir flooded Guaíra Falls, one of the world’s largest waterfalls and a cherished natural monument. The Brazilian military government argued this was a necessary sacrifice for development and that at that time Brazil needed energy more than environmental protection. This narrative is enticing but incorrect. The military government could have pursued alternative power production while sparing the falls, as in the scheme that renowned Brazilian engineer Octávio Marcondes Ferraz outlined in the project’s original blueprints. However, his original design was politically problematic and reignited a border dispute that raised the specter of Brazil and Paraguay’s bellicose past. Thus, Brazil chose to pursue Itaipu at the cost of the famous falls because Itaipu presented an immediate solution to an international conflict that threatened to undermine the military regime’s legitimacy.

Today, in Europe, every museum displays the spoils that stem from the curation of an empire, not to mention that the objects shown are almost all stolen, as Dan Hicks (Oxford University and curator of the Pitt-Rivers Museum in Great Britain) notes. Hicks advocates the urgent return of these artefacts as part of a broader project aimed at dealing with the outstanding debt of colonialism. Few artefacts better embody this history of voracious and extractive colonialism than the Benin Bronzes, a collection of thousands of carved brass plates and ivory tusks that depict the history of the Royal Court of the Obas of the City of Benin, Nigeria, sacked during a British naval attack in 1897. This is the main idea of the following interview with Dan Hicks where he underlines what he had already made clear in his book published in 2020 titled The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution. The Brutish Museums: The Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence and Cultural Restitution.

Recent Brazilian documentaries underscore the epistemic and aesthetic potential of creative performances of one’s own experience. Examples can be found in Rodrigo Siqueira’s Terra deu, terra come (2010), Ariel Ortega and Patrícia Ferreira’s Bicicletas de Nhanderú (2011), and Adirley Queirós’s Branco sai, preto fica (2014). In these films, the person who has experience with a given topic is portrayed as an authority, and their authority derives from both their experience itself and their ability to express that experience poignantly. Over the last thirty years, Brazilian documentary filmmakers and critics have shown a growing interest in subjects’ creative performances in front of the camera. I highlight how performances in contemporary documentaries grow out of the collaboration between director and subject, looking specifically at subjects’ performances that fall somewhere between a traditional documentary interview and a stylized theatrical performance. Brazilian police and security personnel are generally known for their embrace of conservative, hardline positions on crime and on politics more generally. In this article, however, we seek to bring a fine-grained ethnographic perspective to bear on understanding the formation of conservative subjectivities in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo’s security arena in the Bolsonaro era. Departing from traditional studies of police and state centered actors that have long dominated the literature on state violence in Brazil, we focus on the private guards working for Brazilian and multinational companies that are part of a recent boom in the commodification of security. We argue that in the past several years, the industry trains guards to become racialized security subjects through the elaboration of an aspirational identity that our interlocutors referred to as the “profissional de segurança.” Drawing on long term ethnographic research, we demonstrate how guards were trained to think about their labor through a series of masculine, moral registers which contrast righteous work and being a “cidadão de bem” with a reimagined threat—the vagabundo. A better understanding of these discourses and their circulation is key to unpacking how nascent security identities found resonance in Bolsonaro’s discourses. You want to know about the vagabundos? Well, I’ll tell you about them. They steal. They misrepresent ideas. They kill dreams, alienate the youth, and promote their total legacy of destruction. —Adilson, private security guard, retired military

This article aims at introducing Thinking at the Edge (TAE) as a methodology to research affect, both in artistic processes and in academic research. Developed by the philosopher and psychotherapist Eugene Gendlin, TAE is a method that explores implicit meaning at the edges of words from a singular bodily felt sense, which is nonetheless culturally informed. Enabling the articulation of tacit meaning, TAE can be a stimulating tool to expand common definitions or usages of a topic relevant to one’s professional practice. In this text, I present two TAE processes: one with Portuguese actor and director Miguel Fragata, who picked the term “communication,” and another with Brazilian performer and choreographer Gustavo Ciríaco, who chose “perception.” I will be arguing that TAE is a unique democratic tool that pushes intuitive knowing to the fore allowing for original and creative thinking both for practitioners and researchers.

In 2015, Louva Deusas, a feminist collective of black Brazilian woman writers, released their second anthology of erotic poetry, Além dos quartos: coletânea erótica negra Louva Deusas. This article investigates Louva Deusas’ use of eroticism to challenge conservatism and the constraints imposed on black women’s bodies and sexuality. The collective uses independent literature to represent these constraints, particularly through Carolina Maria de Jesus’s metaphor of the quarto de despejo while imagining a beyond to this space. As sexuality itself, Além dos quartos enacts political engagement in relation to the changes that took place toward the end of the Worker’s Party government. I analyze Louva Deusas’ efforts to blacken sexuality as well as their publication’s use of transnational black feminist theory. This article also shows how new generations of black women authors are benefiting from Miriam Alves’s pioneering work in representing black female sexuality.

This article also shows how new generations of black women authors are benefiting from Miriam Alves’s pioneering work in representing black female sexuality. Em 2015, o coletivo feminista de escritoras negras Louva Deusas publicou sua segunda coletânea de poesia erótica: Além dos quartos: coletânea erótica negra Louva Deusas. Este artigo investiga o uso que as Louva Deusas fazem do erotismo para desafiar o conservadorismo e as amarras sociais que se impõem sobre os corpos e a sexualidade das mulheres negras. O coletivo recorre à literatura independente para representar essas amarras através da metáfora do quarto de despejo criada por Carolina Maria de Jesus enquanto imagina um além. Como a própria sexualidade, Além dos quartos é um livro político e dialoga com o contexto de mudanças do fim do governo petista. Analiso os esforços das Louva Deusas para enegrecer as conversas sobre sexualidade no Brasil através do pioneirismo de Miriam Alves ao tratar da sexualidade feminina negra e das escolhas teóricas de textos feministas negras do grupo.","PeriodicalId":52041,"journal":{"name":"Luso-Brazilian Review","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69622481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
