Teaching labour economics: moving from microeconomics to social provisioning 劳动经济学教学:从微观经济学走向社会供给

Bridging the gap between the microeconomic models that have come to comprise much of the content of undergraduate labour economics textbooks and the 'real world' has posed a challenge for many instructors of labour economics. This essay considers the advantages of pluralistic approaches to teaching labour economics and how such courses might be reconceptualised in light of the COVID-19 crisis.

Economics education in a post-pandemic world 大流行后世界的经济学教育

This short article focuses on the challenges of the COVID pandemic for colleges and universities in the USA. After framing one of the serious institutional and ethical problems brought on by the pandemic, the theoretical work of Karl Polanyi and the observations of Frank Bruni and Brian Rosenberg are considered to further analyse the relation between the provision of public goods, the dynamics of higher educational institutions, and the targets of instrumental rationality in society.

In economics, 'values are always with us'. In our studies, we make a number of choices and the choices we make tell us something about our values. Economics is always 'political economics'. The attempt by neoclassical economists to offer a purely scientific economics has failed. Instead, we need to take democracy and pluralism seriously and discuss how a different conceptual framework can strengthen rather than weaken democracy in our societies. Neoclassical economics and 'sustainability economics' are presented as two different ideological orientations in the form of 'narratives'. As economists, we make a choice between narratives (with their respective conceptual framework) and our values are revealed when choosing one narrative rather than the other. Democracy is threatened in some countries and even in nations belonging to the European Union. It is time for us as economists to discuss how democracy can be integrated into economics with its conceptual framework. Health issues, such as COVID-19 are part of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals sanctioned by the United Nations. In this article, a holistic or broad perspective of economics is encouraged. Health issues have features in common with environmental and natural resource issues, for example.

Modes of standardisation for postgraduate teaching in economics in a semi-peripheral country: the case of Portugal 半外围国家经济学研究生教学标准化模式:以葡萄牙为例

Since the first postgraduate program in economics was created in Portugal in 1978, there has been a marked standardisation in the provision of this training. A narrowing of the curricula took place around an increasingly restricted number of courses that may be called 'core', excluding or relegating a wide variety of courses to peripheral areas of economics or to other fields, reducing the chances of pluralist teaching in economics. As this process happened throughout the world, we examine how it took place in Portugal through interviews with those responsible for the said programs. Classifying the modes of dissemination into emulation, coercion, and normative we conclude that imitation of what are considered the best practices in the Anglo-Saxon world can best explain the initial stage of standardisation. Recently, as institutions sought national and international recognition for postgraduate programs, coercion and normative followed in the form of assessment and certification processes.
