A mass mortality assemblage of mysid crustaceans is herein reported from the Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous) sublithographic limestone of Hakel (Lebanon). The studied specimens documented a mass mortality event attesting mysid swarm behaviour, herein briefly described and discussed. Though their poor preservation does not allow a specific assignment, this new record is remarkable, resulting the first formal report of Mysida Boas 1883 (Crustacea, Malacostraca) from the rich crustacean fossil fauna from the Late Cretaceous of Lebanon and from the worldwide Cretaceous record.

The present note documents the finding of two species of marine heterobranch seaslugs along the central-eastern coast of Sicily (Italy, central Mediterranean): the sacoglossan Calliopaea bellula and the nudibranch Tayuva lilacina. These two species show a wide geographical range (C. bellula is present from Norway to the Black Sea, while T. lilacina is a cosmopolitan species) and in the literature were considered common species. However, in the last years, the number of findings of these species is decreasing, at least in the Western Ionian Sea, an area where these species seem to be currently rare. As documented for other Mediterranean areas, the reason for this decline in the number of marine heterobranch species might be attributable to a change in the current regime or to an increase in anthropogenic impacts around the coastal areas.

The arboreal activity of the wood mouse is known, but mostly based on anecdotal evidence or single records. This study reports on field observations carried out systematically during an indirect survey conducted in the Venetian plain using hair tubes positioned at different heights in the shrub layer. The research confirmed that in the study area the wood mouse moves not only at ground level, but at also a few meters above the ground reaching heights up to 2.30 m (1.54 m on average).

Based on available literature, the white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes complex, a species of Community interest according to the EU Habitats Directive, has not been reported in the Lombard Park of the Ticino Valley (Northern Italy) since almost two decades, with the last findings dating back to 2005. In 2021, we found two small populations in the northernmost area of the park (Sesto Calende, province of Varese). These observations support the urge for implementing actions focused on the monitoring and conservation of this endangered species in the Lombard Park of the Ticino Valley in order to avoid its local extinction.

Ammonoids from the Besano Formation published by Airaghi in 1912 kept at the Museo Kosmos in Pavia. The ammonoids from the Besano Formation described by Airaghi in two works in 1912, belonging to the collections of the Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano, as well as many other historical collections stored in this museum, have been lost during World War II. However, some plaster casts of these specimens were recently found among the material stored in the new Museo Kosmos in Pavia during a reorganization of the deposits. The plaster casts, probably made by Airaghi, were obtained from the original specimens corresponding to some species erected by Airaghi and coming from the mine of Tre Fontane (Mt. San Giorgio, Switzerland). Lacking original specimens and related stratigraphic data, the present material is herein reclassified and considered as complementary for the corresponding neotypes, previously stated by Rieber in 1973. Among the taxa not revised in literature, two new combinations are here proposed: Serpianites marianii (Airaghi 1912) and ?Nevadites bassanii (Airaghi 1912). With these plaster casts we also uncovered some original specimens never described. The majority of the material is paired with the original labels by Airaghi. These ammonoids are characteristic of the lower and upper Secedensis Zone (Upper Anisian, Middle Triassic) of the Besano Formation. It is very likely the herein described specimens were collected in the beds belonging to the Secedensis Zone of the mine Tre Fontane which have been completely removed in the first years of excavation activity. [Article in Italian]

We report the first observations of the golden jackal on the Tuscan Apennines (Italy). We observed two individuals 15 times in the district of Prato, between 21 November 2021 and 5 January 2022. Their presence has been assessed through camera traps at the edge of an urbanized area. The southernmost presence data for Italy reported in the literature is documented for Emilia-Romagna, about 200 km north from Prato, while a recent unpublished report records its presence in northern Lazio, about 300 km south. These observations highlight the need to increase the research effort to monitor the expansion of the golden jackal along the Italian peninsula more efficiently.

The Italian fauna of the family Ypsolophidae consists of 19 species. In recent years, knowledge for peninsular Italy has increased, but especially for central Italy. Actually, only few records are available for the southern regions. During the surveys dedicated to the study of macrolepidoptera, several microlepidoptera were also collected. In this paper, the results of the collections for the genus Ypsolopha Latreille 1796 in the Calabria region are reported, updating the Italian checklist of this genus 27 years after its publication. Nine species are listed among which Y. persicella (Fabricius 1787) is new to the fauna of Peninsular Italy, while six other species are new to the fauna of Southern Italy.

Eleocharis mamillata subsp. austriaca belongs to Eleocharis subser. Eleocharis. The presence of this entity in the Italian territory was known for almost all the Alpine administrative regions and for Calabria. According to the Portal to the Flora of Italy, this entity was reported for Piedmont based on erroneous records. Nevertheless, during a wide herbarium survey on the subseries Eleocharis, several old and recent specimens collected in Piedmont have been identified as Eleocharis mamillata subsp. austriaca. Therefore, we can confirm the presence of the taxon in this region and provide a distribution map on the basis of the analysed material.

The Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 is included among the worst invasive alien species in the Mediterranean Sea. Here, we report the finding of the species in two Sicilian rivers, the Irminio and the Imera Meridionale, where it was collected up to 6 km from the river mouths. Although several records of the species are already available from Italy, this is the first evidence of the occurrence of this invasive crab so far from the coastline in the whole country. In the light of the well-known impact of the Atlantic blue crab on the invaded water bodies, the monitoring of the species and appropriate mitigation strategies should be implemented in order to protect the threatened native biota of Sicilian inland waters.
