Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a broad bandgap semiconductor (3.37 eV) with a wide range of applications, such as catalysts, piezoelectric actuators and transducers, solar cells, microsensors, among others. One way of obtaining ZnO is through the controlled oxidation of metallic zinc, which is the third most consumed metal in the world among the non-ferrous metals with the galvanizing industry being responsible for approximately 57% of the worldwide consumption of this metal. Anodizing is a process of surface treatment consisting of creating an oxide film on the metal surface, being able to retain large amounts of dye. ZnO was obtained by anodizing the galvanized steel which was carried out in a 5mM NaHCO3 electrolytic solution at a constant voltage of 35V with an initial current of 0.2A for 8 minutes. Chemical characterization of the anodized surface, thickness of the layer and verification of the morphology obtained were verified, where it was verified the production of na-nofios with about 100nm of diameter. N479 Black Dye commercial dye was deposited. The results showed the obtaining of a homogeneous layer, with the morphology of nanowires with great layer-city of dye absorption.

One way to increase the useful life of low carbon steels is the application, through welding, of surface coatings with specific chemical compositions in the desired region of the sample. As it is a fusion welding process, microstructural changes occur in the material and must be considered. This work aims to evaluate the effects of the chemical composition of the coating and the type of electrical current on the mechanical properties of low carbon steels after application of chrome-based coatings (DIN E10-UM-60GR and E6-UM-60G). For hardfacing, the SMAW process was used, with the making of overlapping strands laterally. Abrasive wear and Vickers hardness tests were performed and, after analyzing the results, it was observed that the E10-UM-60GR electrode (with higher C and Cr contents) obtained superior performance, suffering less abrasive wear and obtaining an average hardness bigger. The use of the E6-UM-60G electrode generated strands with a lower degree of dilution and greater influence on the properties of the HAZ (heat-affected zone).

The galvanic process has a high degree of pollution due to the amount of effluents generated and the toxicity of the chemicals used in the process. You know if hexavalent chromium is known as a carcinogen and the associated residues are dangerous and difficult to use. In view of this, the development of new technologies has been used to use corrosion resistant, environmentally friendly and economically viable processes. An alternative technology that can meet this need is PVD physical vapor deposition, with a spray process. In this context, this study aims to evaluate and compare the performance of aluminum coatings applied by sputtering with varnish in relation to the performance of the electrodeposited chrome coating. For that, the coatings were applied in zamak and were characterized morphologically and electrochemically. The results shown when the aluminum finishes deposited by spraying show equivalent characteristics both in electrochemical performance and in morphological tests when compared to the chrome plating in the conventional process (electroplating), being an alternative of substitution with sustainable use.

The Angico dos Dias carbonate phosphate rock deposit has been exploited and treated in a dry processing plant that includes classification and low, medium and high intensity magnetic concentration. The non-magnetic fraction is used in the production of fertilizers and the fines and magnetic fractions are discarded as tailings. Previous studies indicate the relevant presence of light rare-earth elements and low concentrations of thorium and uranium in the ore. The objective of this work was to characterize the ore, the concentrate and the magnetic tailings of the plant. The results of chemical and mineralogical analyzes indicate that the ore, the product and the tailings are rich in calcium, phosphorus, iron, silicon, aluminum and magnesium. The total content of rare earths is greater than 9 g/kg in the ore and 6 g/kg in the magnetic tailings. The main constituents of the ore are: fluorapatite, hydrobiotite and vermiculite. More detailed analyzes show that cerium, lanthanum, neodymium and samarium are present in the structure of apatite and in monazite particles. Cerium is also found in another mineral without association with other rare earth elements. The results also indicate that the fertilizer production process, with acid attack, promotes the leaching of a significant portion of light rare earth elements contained in apatite and cerianite, which may allow their recovery without significant additional costs.

In mining projects, it is necessary to have a wide knowledge of the main variables of the mineral deposit before strategic mine planning takes effect. In the meantime, the application of geometallurgy has allowed the modeling of parameters related to the lithologies present in the deposit, such as the specific energy in comminution. This work intends to carry out a mine planning case study with the Direct Block Scheduling (DBS) methodology implemented in the MiningMath software and using the Marvin block model. The results indicate that the processing time of each block required more complex decision-making from the DBS algorithm to fulfill the objectives of mine planning. It is also noticed that the algorithms prioritize the extraction of blocks more released in the first years of the mine, anticipating profits and leaving, for the second half of the life of the project, the intensification of development, aiming to release more blocks for mining.

Brazil has the second largest reserve of monazite, which is one of the three main minerals bearing of rare earth elements. In this study, a monazite concentrate, derived from the occurrence of heavy minerals in the coastal strips of the states of Bahia and Espírito Santos, was used. The best way to analyze aqueous solutions rich in rare earths by ICP-OES was also evaluated. In this work, the steps used to obtain an aqueous solution rich in rare earths from the monazite concentrate involved the following steps: addition of NaOH to the concentrate, heating at 400 ºC for 3 hours, washing with water and subsequent leaching of the remaining solid phase with HCl. Chemical and mineralogical characterizations were accomplished on the products of this process and the results indicated that the initial concentrate is rich in light rare earths, the alkaline fusion product is predominantly composed of rare earth hydroxides and free of NaOH. The acid leaching tailings showed to be rich in zirconite, indicating that the dissolution of the rare earth hydroxides formed in the previous step was complete. Spectral interferences in the lines of the predominant elements were considered in the ICP-OES analysis using individual patterns of these elements. The following lines were defined for the predominant elements: Ce 456.236 nm, Th 283.730 nm, La 384.902 nm, Nd 430.058 nm, Pr 390.844 nm, and Sm 428,079 nm. The leachate obtained after acid leaching of rare earth hydroxides was analyzed by this method and the concentrations of the predominant elements (in g/L) were: Ce 32.81, Th 14.76, La 8.58, Nd 3.35, Pr 3.02, and Sm 1.28

With a turbojet compressor that had its blades fractured during laboratory tests, this work carried out a failure analysis aiming at characterizing the problem, identifying the fracture mechanism and proposing a potential post-manufacturing improvement. Typical steps of a failure analysis were performed, including visual and fractographic analyzes via stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The evidence indicated that the component failed due to fatigue, with the presence of very evident striations on the fracture surface, due to a high surface roughness. Therefore, it was considered suitable to propose a shot peening treatment on the product as a way of inducing residual compressive stresses and hindering the process of nucleation of a fatigue crack.
