Farmland values are driven by a complex set of factors. Starting from the idea that land rent values may reflect several characteristics both internal and external to agricultural sector, the paper has implemented a hedonic model based on land rent values in the metropolitan area of Milan, Northern Italy, assessing the influence of climate, soil, territorial and farm variables on a sample of farms. The model is based on data at rent contract level, matched with data at farm and municipal scale retrieved from different sources. Results confirm that land rent prices are affected by some climate variables, along with territorial and farm characteristics.

The work analyses adaptation strategies to cope with extreme events and climate change in viticultural sector. Tools for complex systems analysis are integrated with probabilistic methods and operational research to account for uncertainty and the subjective perception of farmers. The concepts of Expected Utility and Cumulative Prospect Theory are considered to compare expected and prospected damages. The study area is located in the Chianti Classico district (Tuscany). A combination of fans, anti-hail nets and emergency irrigation is suggested as strategies in current scenario. The future climate projections suggest the need of fixed irrigation systems and the modification of production disciplinary. Multi-risk insurance does not seem to be an attractive strategy due to area peculiarities.

The paper focuses on the evaluation of the visual quality of the cityscape of Livorno, in Italy. Using an algorithm based on Flickr’s Application Programming Interface, the coordinates of 7,453 shooting points of a shared photo were downloaded. A direct survey was conducted to assess the perception of urban landscape. The geographical spaces to be evaluated were measured using 78 spherical images played in virtual reality through a virtual reality headset. The data were processed with the Principal Components Analysis. A Visual Quality Index (VQI) was developed to spatialise the results. Saliency maps were calculated to survey typical patterns in areas with high VQI. The results demonstrate how subjective visual perception helps identifying the criteria for the design of high-quality public spaces.

Between 1994 and 1996, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) placed 24 villas designed by Andrea Palladio on the World Heritage List. In this way, the universal value of Palladio’s works has been recognised. The analysis of Palladio’s villas provides evidence that in its thinking, the villa was a building deeply integrated in the surrounding landscape. Whereas in the past, a great deal of attention was devoted to preserving the Palladian villas, the Italian public authorities extended the prohibition on modifying the property to the landscape in only a small number of cases. The aim of the paper is to analyse the transformation of the landscape surrounding the Palladian villas inscribed in the World Heritage list from the beginning of the 19th century until today.

Aim of the paper is to present the results of a research experience focused on the setting of a sustainability indicator in presence of risk/uncertainty over time. Firstly, a literature review of the most widespread methodologies for the evaluation of project economic sustainability in a life cycle perspective is presented, extrapolating the most relevant research lines; secondly, a four steps research experience is illustrated. The methodology for calculating a stochastic economic-environmental indicator is proposed, by adopting a stochastic Global Cost approach to solve Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA). The input for the analysis are modeled through Probability Distribution Functions, while the durability of components is modeled through the stochastic approach to the Factor Method.

The aim of the paper is to assess the perceived visual quality of the rural landscape in the Valdichiana aretina, Italy, through a survey conducted on a sample of ordinary people. The research comprises of three steps. First, the territory under study is divided into homogeneous landscape units through the implementation of GIS-based methodologies. Second, a photo-sampling of the area is carried out and a direct survey is conducted using the photographic material collected. Lastly, the information gathered is processed with the Multiple Factor Analysis technique. The results reveal that the visual quality of the landscape units is perceived differently according to the sets of variables summarized by the extracted components: composition and structure, stewardship and individual experience.

The concept of urban resilience describes the capacity of a system to recover its functionality after a disturbance. Considering that every city is unique, the aim of the paper is to apply the concept of ecosystem health to the Metropolitan Area of Naples (Italy), classifying the territory according to its urban health. Three different perspectives have been considered: “vigour”, “organisation” and “resilience” and according to this framework, a system of indicators has been developed, identifying their territorial distribution. The application provides a subdivision of the Metropolitan Area in different zones with various degrees of resistance to risks and vulnerabilities. The evaluation has been carried out integrating Geographic Information System and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis.

This study applied discrete-choice experiments to estimate preferences for a program aimed at reducing the retreatment of the sandy beach at “Lido di Noto”, a renowned Sicilian bathing resort close to Noto (Italy). Econometric analysis of data was based on Multinomial Logit (MNL), Latent Class (LC) and Mixed Logit (MXL) models. Findings shown that users appreciated the advancement of the current coastline through nourishment, and negatively perceived the construction of emerged sea barriers. MXL and LC models revealed that preferences were heterogeneous.

Apulia is the fifth Italian region in terms of irrigated area and irrigation water used in agriculture. However, inefficiencies in the management of the regional irrigation consortia force most of farmers to use groundwater by private wells, with negative consequences on soil and crop characteristics, and with grave desertification risk. In the first instance, through a choice experiment survey, the study investigated the aptitude of the regional farmers toward the abandonment of their farm wells in exchange for an improved consortium irrigation network and additional services. Then, through a stochastic profit frontier, the impact of these choices was assessed on the economic performance of farms, providing useful information for suitable and fair groundwater preservation policies.

The aim of this paper is to explore the monetary value of marine ecosystem services provided by coralligenous habitats in the Adriatic sea. The paper describes the development of a contingent valuation survey and examines the perspective of Millennials. Even if this group of citizens presents environmental attitudes, external factors and individual characteristics may prevent effective environmental friendly behaviour. Prior academic research regarding monetary evaluation of coralligenous habitats has not focused on Millennials behaviour. We carried out the survey to a sample of 897 Italian students. The findings will be of interest to academic researchers, to institutional decision makers, and to people in general who are concerned with marine ecosystem services. This study encourages future empirical researches trying to refine and apply the finding to support decision makers in identifying management alternatives.
