Goal: This research intends to propose a remuneration system adjusted to remote work conditions in Pandemic context, considering the types of Charles Handy’s Cultural Typology Design/Methodology/Approach: The research developed in this study is qualitative and descriptive. For data collection, a questionnaire elaborated based in a validated protocol was applied to the director and other employees at the company as a Simple Case Study. Results: According to the results, the Person Culture is the one most present at the Organization studied. The authors took into consideration the fact that the Task Culture is also greatly presented in the organizational culture of the company. The results indicate that the company would need to increase the share of variable remuneration in compliance with the more autonomous forms of work organization rules, as the home office way of work. The company also presents a good organizational climate, with a lot of collaboration and trust in the relations between its employees. Limitations of the Investigation: the limitations of the study are related to the fact that it is not possible to generalize the results to other small companies, considering that the organizational culture of the studied company is unique if compared to other companies. Other limitations refer to the fact that the study presents an initial overview of a home office situation at the beginning of the pandemic context, and other considerations can be made later. Practical Implications: The company should seek to increase the variable portion on the payroll of its employees. Because the people that work at the company have great autonomy, working remotely and being able to choose work hours, adopting a system that prioritizes variable portion of the salary is important so that the workers feel motivates to produce more, seeking a higher remuneration. Otherwise, with a good level of fixed remuneration, the workers can become less productive and comfortable Originality/Value: The research contributes to understand the remuneration strategies in new work contexts, especially in terms of the transition from presential work to home office in a digital market business.

Goal: This paper aims to examine the competences required from supply chain management professionals in Brazil. Design / Methodology / Approach: A survey with 239 professionals explored 44 different competences they deemed important. Results: Competences can be grouped in eight categories, some of which updated to reflect the changes in the SCM practice. It reinforces the importance for general behavioral, technical, analytical and business competences, suggested in previous research, and provides a more granular view and emphasizes differences of technical expertise depending on the scope of the manager's function. Technology, information systems and quantitative skills are different competences required to support changes in e-commerce and digital transformations. Limitations of the investigation: Differences among industry sectors or functions should be investigated in more detail due to respondent´s heterogeneity Practical implications: Our study can serve as a guide when searching new talents and training SCM professionals, as it emphasizes competences common to all SCM functions and specific depending on their scope. Originality / Value: Firms operating in service sectors generally demand higher levels of business awareness competences than the ones in manufacturing sectors. This reflects the service-dominance logic, where service is the fundamental basis of exchange and firms need to be more customer oriented.

Analysis of the effects of operational excellence implementation on inspection outcomes in the pharmaceutical industry: an empirical study
IF 1.1 Q3 OPERATIONS RESEARCH & MANAGEMENT SCIENCE Pub Date : 2021-04-30 DOI: 10.14488/bjopm.2021.021
Steffen Eich, T. Friedli
Goal: The goal of this paper is to test the possible connection between pharmaceutical manufacturing plants’ Operational Excellence implementation and regulatory inspection outcomes. Methodology: This paper uses logistic regression models on a unique dataset compiled from proprietary operations datasets and published FDA inspection outcomes. Results: The findings show that sites with advanced Operational Excellence implementation are more likely to receive favorable inspection outcomes and more so when specifically focusing on Total Quality Management implementation as a subset. A similar trend exists for the Quality Control laboratories and their compliance deficiencies when analyzed separately. Limitations of the investigation: The limitations of this research mainly lie in the limited size and composition of the available dataset. European manufacturing sites and quality control labs are overrepresented and the sample size for quality control labs is rather small. Practical Implication: This paper can help industrial managers and regulatory officials to better direct their resources to manufacturing sites and QC laboratories that are at a higher risk of quality non-compliance. Originality/value: It is a long-standing maxim in literature and practice that manufacturing sites shall build improvement capabilities to reach Operational Excellence which includes superior product quality. Quality Management is particularly important in the pharmaceutical industry and often evolves on its own in the organizations. Pharmaceutical production plants are inspected regarding their quality processes and systems by regulatory authorities. However, there is lacking published evidence of the interplay of Operational Excellence practices and regulatory inspection outcomes.

Goal: This paper performs a literature review to identify and analyze the main gaps related to crisis management and risk management in the engineering projects context. Design / Methodology / Approach: A literature review research design was carried out merging bibliometrics, network and qualitative and quantitative content analysis. Data were obtained from the scientific database Scopus. Results: Publications per year illustrates that in 2016 as concentrated the major number of papers. Only 1% of the authors published 4 papers about models for software engineering risks analysis and reduction. The paper distribution by country shows that the United States has the highest percentage, about 16% of the total. The network of co-occurrence of all keywords has three well-defined clusters. Limitations of the investigation: The quantity of papers analyzed and the selection of a single database. Practical implications: This research encourages project managers to develop pertinent skills for crisis management and risk management in the engineering projects context. Furthermore, this study can guide decision-makers on how to manage risks during the crisis, and also highlights the importance of creating a lessons learned database. Originality / Value: The current study can contribute to companies catching lessons learned from literature, helping project managers to motivate the team during the crisis scenarios, to perform an effective struggle during the crisis, and to turn to the former position in a short time after the crisis.

ABSTRACT. Goal: The main objective of this research paper is to propose a chart, named  Modified Control Chart, where the process variance () is allowed to be larger than the in-control variance value () until a maximum value (), as long as the process remains capable, in the sense that it produces a specified (tolerated) small fraction of non-conforming items. Design / Methodology / Approach: The research methodology was quantitative approach with statistical analysis of simulated data, to assess the practical impact of variance increase in process control in terms of quality requirements. Results: The analysis of the simulated data showed that by using the proposed  Modified Control Chart the number of unnecessary interventions in the process could be decreased, contributing to improve its efficiency. Limitations of the investigation: The analysis assumed mean and variance known, which is unlikely to occur in real applications. Research considering unknown parameters is also in progress. Practical implications: The S2 Modified Control Chart detects only genuinely increases in the process variance, which significantly increase the rate of non-conforming items being produced, preventing unnecessary process stop and assessment for assignable causes if only a small increase in the process variance occurs, contributing for higher process efficiency and reduce costs. Originality / Value: This paper introduces a new control chart to monitor the variance of quality characteristics being produced by capable processes, preventing process overcontrol.

Goal: This research aims to examine the trade-off behaviour between productivity, quality and maintenance performance and evaluate the efficiency of the framework integrated to a time variability in operational management.  Design / Methodology / Approach: The proposed framework integrates a stochastic analysis of process and TVM to manage process variability and analyse the trade-off behaviour between quality, productivity, and maintenance efficiency. The framework generates a control chart for each workstation and analyses the operator's time to execute an assembly process for six workstations. The processes are characterised and evaluated via stochastic simulation, resulting in a trade-off analysis with a multicriteria approach. Results: A relational graphic of performance dimensions shows that productivity and maintenance performance have a high dependency on time variability management, whereas quality has a minor impact over trade-off decisions. The proposed framework has a huge significance to operational management which allow to apply complex models to time variability analysis and organisation performance. Limitations of the investigation: The trade-off analysis in this study is limited to a constant trade-off model to validate the framework. Practical implications: This framework, used in association with traditional management philosophies, is a powerful tool that permits managers to develop a trade-off analysis and make decisions on workstations. Thus, a research field that correlates time variability with performance dimensions may be validated by this framework.  Originality / Value: A framework that allows the use of MCDM to analyse the trade-off behaviour on organization performance and a trade-off analysis between performance dimensions and time variability management in operational performance.
