Abstract In a landscape of uncertain budgets, it is more important than ever that libraries make the best decisions for their collections. Overlap analysis is an essential part of that decision-making process. In the previous decades, overlap analysis and tools have evolved to meet the challenges associated with analyzing today’s complex resources. This case study outlines the overlap analysis workflows and tools utilized by the University of Arkansas Libraries. The paper also discusses the Libraries’ processes for creating overlap reports for both full-text and citation-only resources and provides an appendix that details how the Libraries completed select functions outside of vendor-supplied tools.

Abstract Librarians have reflected on their literature since state library association journals and newsletters began publication. This trend peaked in the 70s and 80s, and there was a virtual gap in the literature in the following decades. It is crucial to reassess publication trends due to recent changes in the library profession, such as declining membership and ease of publishing online. Print publication trends in state library association journals and newsletters will be examined using OCLC MARC records retrieved in Connexion and compiled in an Excel spreadsheet and graph. In addition, electronic publishing trends will be analyzed by assessing state association websites for the presence of a journal or newsletter, its format, and whether it is open source. Results from the study show that there were changing trends in the frequency of print publishing over the years, and most state associations presently publish an online journal in open-access PDF format. However, OCLC users should update OCLC records to reflect accurate publication dates and make separate records for an electronic format to depict publication trends accurately. State associations should also create a retention plan for electronically published material to avoid losing a historical archive.

Identifying Combinations of Altmetrics and Web of Science Usage That Linked to Early Citations of an Article Received: A Crisp-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA) 确定Altmetrics和Web of Science用法与文章早期引用相关的组合:一个Crisp-Set定性比较分析(csQCA)

Abstract The relations of altmetrics/usage of an article and its citations have been studied extensively by using several variable-oriented approaches, e.g., correlations analysis, regression analysis, and so on. Variable-oriented approaches are symmetrically designed to estimate the “net effects” of independent variables on outcomes. In contrast to variable-oriented approaches, Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), a case-oriented approach based on set theory, models the concept of conjunctural causation, rather than a single net effect. QCA assumes asymmetry, equifinality, and causal complexity. In this study, based on four data sets from Scientific Reports, a Crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA) was employed to identify combinations of altmetrics and Web of Science usage (WOSusage) that linked to early citations an article received. Our results revealed the existence of diverse combinations of altmetrics and WOSusage that linked to early citations. The four combinations with the highest raw coverage for each data set indicated that high Mendeley readers together with high WOSusage played a key role in early citations an article received. The other altmetrics, including Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and news, played roles in linking to early citations an article received but varied in different combinations for each data set.

Abstract The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a new memo requiring all federal agencies that fund research provide immediate public access to resulting research data and scholarly publications. This new memo removes the option of a 12 months embargo, and it extends the requirement agencies with less than $100 million in annual research and development expenditures. This column investigates the possible impacts of the broader policy, including introducing the public access requirement to new agencies and academic disciplines, and how a repository approach to public access might intersect with publisher provided open access.

Abstract The study examines the possible predatory journals in Library and Information Science research in India, including the affiliation status of the authors publishing in those predatory journals, frequency of returning authors, and country-wise distribution of authors. The paper used Beall’s list to find out the predatory journals in LIS published from India. Publication trends, affiliations of authors, and the status of the 22 LIS journals under the study were critically analyzed. The result shows that the predatory journals were diminishing slowly; in 2016, there were eight active journals, while in 2021, it was reduced to four journals. Similarly, the publication trends show that the highest number of articles (398) was published in the year 2015, and it was only 66 articles in 2020. It is revealed that academics hailing from state universities (42.88%) are the highest contributors to the predatory journals, followed by professionals from government colleges (16.76%). The results indicate that predatory publishing was rampant in the early years but declined gradually. Researchers from India have published the most articles, totaling 1760 (93%), followed by those from Nigeria (64, 3.3%), Bangladesh (10), and Saudi Arabia (eight articles). It is also revealed that 21.66% (n = 438) are returning authors who have published more than one article in the sample journals. The paper discusses the role of the government and especially the University Grants Commission (UGC) in curbing the menace of predatory publishing. The authors also discuss the possible role of library professionals in stopping the plague of predatory publishing.
