The Asian giant hornet represents a threat to the global agricultural sector, as it is a species with predatory and invasive behavior that directly affects honey bees (Apis melifera), the main pollination agents of fruit trees, vegetables and seed production. The objective of the research was to develop a spatial diagnosis of the health risk associated with Vespa mandarinia Smith due to its possible impact on the Mexican agrifood sector. For this purpose, economically important crops were identified, grouped by pollination percentage and the potential distribution of the Asian giant hornet was identified using the maximum entropy model. The resulting health risk cartographic model allowed the identification of areas with different health risk indices (low, medium, high and very high), as well as the definition of priority areas spatially represented in quadrants and agri-food clusters at risk (clusters). These results are presented as a geotechnological tool that can strengthen the planning of epidemiological surveillance in Mexico, which has the potential to contribute to the establishment of preventive strategies to address the health risk posed by V. mandarinia to the Mexican agricultural sector.

The presence of Leucoptera sinuella (Reutti) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), commonly known as the poplar moth, is cited for the first time for Argentina and, in particular, for the province of Mendoza. This economically important microlepidoptera mines poplar leaves (Populus spp.), reducing photosynthetic activity. Additionally, it can migrate to neighboring crops, for example, apple crops, pupating in its pedicle cavity. In Chile, it has caused the quarantine rejection of this fruit in countries such as the United States and Mexico. For all these reasons, monitoring the species, analyzing its establishment and taking control measures to prevent its spreading to other regions of the country, are imperative for the evaluation of this economically important species.

The condition called "river disease" (MDR by its acronym in Spanish) is an intoxication in immature stages of honey bees caused by a compound from the genus Sebastiania Spreng and concentrated in the exudates of Epormenis cestri Berg. Our objective was to determine the temporal dynamics of the life cycle of E. cestri, its association with the predominant vegetation components and the influence of the Uruguay river on the size of its populations. With this aim, we selected 5 sites in the vicinity of the Uruguay river where populations of E. cestri were sampled using the Stem-tap technique modified for this purpose. The effect of landscape components on the abundance of E. cestri was evaluated using GLMM. It was determined that the hatching of the E. cestri eggs was in mid-October, finding a staggered distribution of its phenophases. In addition, we found significantly negative effects of the Espinal forest cover and the increase in the distance from the banks of the Uruguay river on the total abundance of E. cestri. This work shows some first clues for the understanding of how the components of the landscape structure the populations of E. cestri, allowing to predict the critical moment of incidence of MDR.

Several phytochemicals, such as extracts and essential oils, are among the ecological alternatives that have been studied for the control of pathogens that affect humans, animals, and plants. Essential oils are aromatic oily liquids obtained from plant material and their use to control pathogens is widespread. However, they can have adverse effects when taken in high concentrations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival and palatability of a balanced-energy protein diet with the addition of two essential oils, Lippia junelliana (Mold.) Tronc. and Elionorus muticus (Spreng.) Kuntze, in newly hatched worker bees (Apis mellifera L.) during a period of 15 days. Consumption and number of live bees were measured daily for each treatment. For L. junelliana, our results showed a non-toxic trend in long-term survival trials (15 days) at low concentrations. In the case of E. muticus, a toxic effect with low survival was observed at all concentrations. Both essential oils showed good palatability, even at toxic levels. Our results allow us to propose the use of L. junelliana essential oil in field experiments of A. mellifera hives.

Sunflowers are attacked by insect pests at various stages of crop development. Among them there is a complex of species of Coleoptera order, genus Listroderes Schoenherr, commonly known as “sunflower weevils”. The adults affect the crop at the early stages of its development. During 2019-2020 growing season, adult of Listroderes foveatus (Lea) species caused significant losses in the sunflower plant stand, in several sunflower plots of the southeastern region of Buenos Aires province. Damage at basal level of the plant stem was registered. Depending on the vegetative development stage, they caused their cut or strangulation, followed by overturning and subsequent death. The magnitude of the damage caused was reflected in the need for total or partial resowing in several sunflower plots.

The Oedipodinae subfamily is the most species-rich and numerically abundant group of Acrididae in Algeria. Here, genetic and chemical data were used to characterize the identities of six species: Oedipoda miniata mauritanica (Lucas, 1849); Acrotylus patruelis (Herrich-Shaeffer, 1838); A. insubricus insubricus (Scopoli, 1786); Sphingonotus (Neosphingonotus) azurescens (Rambur, 1838); Sphingonotus (Neosphingonotus) finotianus (Saussure, 1885); and Sphingoderus carinatus (Saussure, 1888). Individuals were collected from two different sites in the Sétif region of northeastern Algeria. First, specimens were classified based on their morphological traits. Second, phylogenetic analysis was performed using DNA barcoding data (COI gene). Third, the specimens’ cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) were analyzed. The phylogenetic analysis revealed clear distinctions among the species. The chemotaxonomic analysis highlighted CHC profile similarities between S. azurescens and S. finotianus and CHC profile differences between A. patruelis and A. i. insubricus. Compared to S. azurescens and S. finotianus, S. carinatus had n-alkanes and trimethylalkanes with much shorter carbon chains. The genetic and chemical data obtained here have helped clarify differences within and between genera. These data also enabled to clearly distinguish among the six species.

Here, genetic and chemical data were used to characterize the identities of six species: Oedipoda miniata mauritanica (Lucas, 1849); Acrotylus patruelis (Herrich-Shaeffer, 1838); A. insubricus insubricus (Scopoli, 1786); Sphingonotus (Neosphingonotus) azurescens (Rambur, 1838); Sphingonotus (Neosphingonotus) finotianus (Saussure, 1885); and Sphingoderus carinatus (Saussure, 1888). Individuals were collected from two different sites in the Sétif region of northeastern Algeria. First, specimens were classified based on their morphological traits. Second, phylogenetic analysis was performed using DNA barcoding data (COI gene). Third, the specimens’ cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) were analyzed. The phylogenetic analysis revealed clear distinctions among the species. The chemotaxonomic analysis highlighted CHC profile similarities between S. azurescens and S. finotianus and CHC profile differences between A. patruelis and A. i. insubricus. Compared to S. azurescens and S. finotianus, S. carinatus had n-alkanes and trimethylalkanes with much shorter carbon chains. The genetic and chemical data obtained here have helped clarify differences within and between genera. These data also enabled to clearly distinguish among the six species.","PeriodicalId":54250,"journal":{"name":"Revista De La Sociedad Entomologica Argentina","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44875139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aphids and ants are relatively well faunistically studied in Serbia. However, there is a need to present the mutualistic associations between these two groups of insects, since there is not sufficient information on this topic for the territory under investigation. In total, 220 samples of plant-aphid-ant associations were included in this study. In 59 localities from all parts of Serbia, 32 ant taxa were registered and connected with 74 identified aphid taxa. The most frequently collected ant species found attending various aphid species were Lasius niger (L.), L. alienus (Foerster) and Prenolepis nitens (Mayr). The most common aphid species was Aphis fabae Scopoli collected on 27 plant species. The trophic associations are presented as a list of ant taxa followed with aphids and their host plants.

Zaprionus indianus Gupta is an invasive pest species that has colonized the American continent in the last 20 years. This species is a polyphagous species that with Drosophila melanogaster Meigen and D. simulans Sturtevant utilized a wide variety of fruits as breeding and feeding resources. In the present study we quantified the relative abundance of these species in adult and emerged samples collected from various hosts (commercial fruits) in different localities in northern Argentina. We detected overlapping of rearing and feeding resources between the analyzed species although, our results revealed that the relative abundance between Drosophila and Z. indianus species varied between both adult and emerged samples. This result revealed a differential use of resources and/or interspecific competition.
