A derelict 150-year-old railway station building in Northern Ireland has been reborn as a state-of-the-art multimodal transport hub with integrated rail, bus and active travel facilities. The 1875 Waterside Station in Londonderry was abandoned after bomb damage in the 1970s, and its hastily built replacement nearby soon reached capacity. A European-Union-funded project has restored the old rail terminus to its former role and added a bus station, park-and-ride facility and links to the city’s greenways for cyclists and pedestrians. This paper provides an overview of the North West Transport Hub project, from inception to completion in 2022.

Civil engineering has transformed the health, wealth and wellbeing of societies over the past 200 years but is also driving the global climate and environmental crises. This paper proposes the educational requirements for a ‘new-model civil engineer’, whose threshold knowledge of engineering fundamentals, outstanding connective skills and holistic systems thinking will empower them to be a responsible part of a more stable socio-ecological system. The approach represents a sea change in civil engineering education, which the authors believe represents the most exciting opportunity for the profession in two centuries.

UK’s Climate Change Committee says a resilient, net-zero-emissions power system can be built by 2035 to meet national sustainability targets, but not at the current pace of delivery. Committee member Richard Dawson says civil engineers have a crucial role to play in meeting the challenge.

There is significant potential for large infrastructure projects with multiple demolition phases to kick-start a second-hand materials market and unlock a truly circular economy. Civil engineers are well-placed to lead this by carrying out reuse appraisals, commonly known in the buildings sector as ‘pre-redevelopment audits’. The paper sets current practice and emerging policies regarding reuse in the construction sector, then describes the steps for undertaking an effective audit. The aim is to assess and maximise the reuse and recovery of materials from the start, thereby helping to reduce the industry’s overall greenhouse gas emissions.
