Examples of carbon dioxide emissions data in the circular economy: highway transport

The UK needs to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of its transport sector to meet its net zero target. This paper considers the carbon dioxide cycle for two motorway bridges built in in the 1960s. The emissions estimates are validated using both carbon dioxide emission intensity and by comparison with published data of similar assets, while user emissions are estimated from estimates of the number of vehicles using the assets. Conclusions on past and future carbon dioxide emissions are drawn from these examples. The work confirms that driving down user-generated emissions rather than capital or operational and maintenance emissions is the key to achieving net zero targets.

Construction engineering at the Acre: temporary stability and roof mounted cranes Acre

The Acre is a refurbishment of a 1980s office building in central London, UK. A key requirement was to divide temporarily the ten-storey structure into two independent parts during demolition and later reconstruction. This paper describes the award-winning temporary works used to create a clear work front, with four prop ties horizontally stabilising the building while the site was served by rooftop mounted tower cranes. Far fewer temporary elements were required than first envisaged, leading to benefits to programme, cost, safety and emissions.

This paper focuses on the integration of hydraulic equipment into temporary works, and how they can work together to provide safe and effective solutions across different fields of civil engineering. It focuses on the challenges faced by the temporary works designer when integrating hydraulics into modular construction methods for structures such as high-rise buildings, airport infrastructure and sport stadia, with notable examples provided from around the world. It also covers high-capacity tower systems for refinery construction and various bridge construction projects, from concrete viaducts to suspension bridges.

Building information modelling (BIM) is both a digital modelling method and information integration platform for interoperability in the construction industry. This paper reviews the concepts and features of BIM along with its different meanings, historical evolution and data exchange standards. It then analyses its application in the Chinese construction industry is analysed, with examples of recent major projects. It concludes that many civil engineers are still unable to use BIM to its full potential due to implementation complexity and the industry’s fragmented production structure.

Embedding integration of temporary works with permanent works on railway projects
Q4 ENGINEERING, CIVIL Pub Date : 2023-01-06 DOI: 10.1680/jcien.22.00166
S. Williams
This paper demonstrates how UK rail-track owner Network Rail and its supply chain are working collaboratively to integrate permanent works and temporary works design and execution to improve safety, reduce error, improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The work is part of Network Rail’s ‘health and safety by design’ initiative, which aims to eliminate or reduce risks during design development for construction, operation and maintenance activities. The paper will directly benefit civil engineers using temporary works on Britain’s railway network, but it can also be applied across the international building and infrastructure sector.

The changing nature of groundwater control for temporary works
Q4 ENGINEERING, CIVIL Pub Date : 2022-12-22 DOI: 10.1680/jcien.22.00128

Groundwater control for temporary works uses a range of methods to allow below-ground construction in stable and workably dry conditions. Over the past 30 years this has had to change due to increased environmental regulation of groundwater and shorter programme timescales for deeper and larger projects. This paper discusses how traditional groundwater control strategies are evolving in response to these challenges and the increasing focus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions in construction. Consideration is also given to the range of soil permeability suitable for the application of dewatering techniques, and the related issue of sources of risk and uncertainty in design and procedures for managing these.

Soft touch temporary works: Westminster Hall roof lantern freestanding access, UK

The temporary access scaffold for refurbishing Westminster Hall roof lantern at the Palace of Westminster in London, UK required a particularly sensitive approach. The only means of support other than scaffold towers 38 m apart at ground level were two awkward-shaped parapet walls. Removing the capping stones of these walls would be a health and safety risk and unsympathetic to the historic listed building. Standing over 45 m high with a main bridged span of 25 m, the scaffold was stabilised without the need for a single intrusive fixing. It was supported directly off existing parapet walls in such a way that no trace of the scaffold was left after 3 years in use.

Rapid construction of modular buildings for emergencies: a case study from Hong Kong, China

A new wave of the Covid-19 pandemic struck Hong Kong in February 2022. It led to construction of a temporary 1000-bed hospital and 10 000-bed isolation and treatment facility on an island site in just 51 days using factory-made modules. To achieve such rapid construction, module assembly was carried out at a separate site between the factories and site. Several new modular construction technologies were also developed, including adjustable base supports, large-span roof modules, universal safety barriers and an intelligent cloud platform for construction management. But to enable sustainable construction of such emergency buildings in future, further studies on demolition, recycling and relocation of modular buildings need to be carried out in the post-pandemic era.
