Nurses’ professional activity and work culture in Soviet Estonia and in the transition period

. The qualitative study aimed to analyse Estonian nurses’ professional activity and work culture during the Soviet era and the transition period of the 1990s from the perspective of senior nurses. In 1940–1941 and 1944–1991, the territory of the Republic of Estonia was occupied by Soviet Russia. The ‘new period of awakening’ was initiated under Gorbachev’s perestroika and glasnost (1985–1991), leading to democratisation. As soon as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Estonia began to establish a new healthcare system based on European standards. The research was conducted in 2021 and 2022. Senior nurses (aged 69–87) who had worked for at least 20 years during the Soviet era and at least 5 years during the transition period were surveyed. Thematic interviews were conducted in written form and orally (13 interviewees), followed by a focus group interview (8 interviewees). A thematic content analysis was performed. Nurses’ daily work during the Soviet era was characterised by poor working conditions, hierarchical professional relations, and miserable career prospects. Nursing, like many other fields, was strongly influenced by Soviet ideology. The relationship between nurses was mutually supportive. The period of transition created a chaotic situation – the working methods of the previous period were considered outdated, but no new direction had yet been established. Nurses’ knowledge was improved through professional training and access to foreign experience.

. Copper is an indispensable biometal participating as a redox catalyst in many important biochemical processes. However, if uncontrolled, copper ions induce the formation of reactive oxygen species and become toxic. For this reason, cellular copper metabolism is tightly regulated and specific proteins – copper chaperones – participate in the metalation of cellular copper transporters and enzymes. The thermodynamic background for cellular copper distribution is known, and copper is driven to cellular destinations according to shallow affinity gradients. Copper metabolism is disturbed in the case of Wilson’s, Menkes, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), characterized by copper overload, deficiency, and misdistribution, respectively. Wilson’s and Menkes disease could be treated by copper chelators and supplements, respectively; however, with AD, a search for effective molecular tools for the correction of copper metabolism is ongoing. One natural copper binding ligand – α lipoic acid – has shown positive results in cellular and fruit fly models of AD and serves as a promising candidate for the regulation of copper metabolism in the case of AD.

. The process of carrying out simulation training within mental health nursing is part of a teaching method used to increase a student’s understanding of mental illness, allowing them to develop the required empathic practices that will form part of their skillset. Simulation training has proven to be an effective teaching method within the nursing curriculum. Simulation training provides assistance in the alleviation of societal stigma and general fear and anxiety when communicating with patients who have mental health disorders. The aim of this research is to study student emotions and feelings that may have arisen within the context of mental health simulation training. The current research was conducted by making use of a cohort of undergraduate nursing students in the field of mental health who were undertaking mental health simulation training in a healthcare college. Student feedback was analysed using qualitative content analysis, based on a process of self-reflection by the students themselves. The analysis focused on emotions that had arisen during the study process, and emotional management processes that had been adopted by the students. The results of the research confirmed the supposition that the students had undergone emotional tension during mental health simulation training. Based on the results of the analysis, a model could be designed, which would provide the required emotional preparation and support during a mental health simulation training. This consists of a series of recommendations, which will assist in the emotional preparation of students who are undertaking simulation training.
