Background and objective

The Speech in Noise Test in Spanish (Prueba Auditiva de Habla en Ruido en Español, PAHRE) is a recently developed test not only measures speech reception thresholds in noise but also assesses the decline in intelligibility across various signal-to-noise ratio values.
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the speech-in-noise recognition ability of normal-hearing subjects using this speech-in-noise test in Spanish. The relationship between age and speech recognition in environments with background is assessed, as well as the possible benefits of the Lombard effect for rehabilitation.

Material and methods

A total of 143 normal-hearing participants were categorized into five age groups (18–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60–69, >70 years). The participants underwent a comprehensive 30-min hearing assessment, which included a battery of audiological tests, with a particular focus on the Speech in Noise Test in Spanish.

Results

The results enabled the establishment of psychometric functions illustrating decreases in intelligibility across various signal-to-noise ratio values. Furthermore, reference values for speech-in-noise recognition thresholds were delineated for each age group.

Conclusion

The findings underscored the efficacy of test in assessing signal-to-noise ratio loss within the Spanish-speaking population, facilitating the comparison of age-related declines in speech-in-noise recognition. The results also highlight the potential advantages of incorporating the Lombard effect into speech-in-noise tests.

Backgrounds and objective

Singers depend greatly on their voice and any impairment of the phonatory system can harm their vocal health, well-being and professional performance. The main objective of this study is to analyze differences between singers with and without vocal pathology in terms of vocal symptoms, vocal hygiene-related behaviors, and knowledge of factors involved in vocal health.

Materials and method

To carry out this research, a sample of 43 singers has been collected and different aspects have been analyzed through an ad-hoc survey.

Results

The results show that vocal symptoms such as “difficulty reaching high notes” (62.8%), “loss of vocal flexibility” (58.1%) and “dryness in the throat” (55.8%) were those most frequently experienced by singers. Respondents with vocal pathology (VP) presented the symptoms “dryness in the throat”, “loss of flexibility” and “vocal fatigue” with a significantly higher frequency than singers without vocal pathology (NVP). A high percentage of participants with VP identified aspects such as emotional stress (83.3%) and speaking during laryngitis (87.5%) as harmful to their voice, but more than half were unaware of the negative effect of throat clearing, whispering and reflux.

Conclusions

It can be concluded that the vocal health of singers is characterized by a high prevalence of vocal symptoms and limited knowledge about vocal hygiene.

Background and aim

Rare or minority diseases, with a prevalence of 1 per 2,000 inhabitants, can often cause complex communication needs and intellectual disabilities. The aim of this study is to compare the expressive communicative profiles in 2 groups of people with 2 rare disease diagnoses: Syngap1 syndrome and Fragile X syndrome.

Participants and method

Information was collected from 13 participants (7 with Syngap1: 2 boys and 5 girls, mean age 10.27 years; 6 with fragile minority.

Results

No significant differences were found in communicative modes or functions, except in non-verbal communication, where people with a Syngap1 diagnosis made greater use of vocalizations and gestures. The only difference in communicative functions was affirmation or denial, which was more frequent in the fragile X group.

Conclusion

Both groups have complex communication needs, although the fragile X group shows greater ability in the use of language.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a recessive autosomal neuromuscular disease that causes degeneration of alpha motor neurons in the spinal cord and dysfunction of the neuromuscular junction, which causes a progressive muscular weakness and hypotonia affecting the limbs, axial musculature, and respiratory musculature. It can also concur with bulbar dysfunction, which affects the glossopharyngeal, vagus, accessory and hypoglossal nerves. In such cases, it can cause dysphagia, dysarthria, flaccid paralysis, atrophy and fasciculation of the muscles innervated by said cranial nerves. Regarding vocal function, there are few works that describe it thoroughly. The goal of this work is to put forward a state of the art about what is known about voice in SMA. A non-systematic review of works mentioning voice in SMA has been carried out against the databases of PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. The features of voice in SMA found in the articles are: vocal weakness, low intensity, velar and pharyngeal hypotonia, nasality, wet voice, and bilateral cordal palsy. It is necessary to carry over a more detailed assessment of vocal conditions in SMA patients in order to complete current knowledge about the natural history of the disease, and in order to objectify the progress of said patients in clinical trials.

Introduction

Auditory-perceptual evaluation is key for diagnosing voice disorders, but variability in judgments underscores the need for improved training materials. The All-Voiced app was developed to enhance consistency in evaluations through real-time feedback and data-driven training.

Objective

To present preliminary findings from the first 75 days following the launch of the latest version of the app (September 2024), focusing on user profiles and voice evaluations, exploring the app's potential for deeper insights as more data is gathered.

Method

The latest version of the All-Voiced app, launched in September 2024, includes a fully integrated backend for data collection from users who provide consent. The app enables users to practice voice evaluations, receive feedback, and contribute to research. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze user profiles and evaluations from the first 75 days post-launch of this latest version. Box plots and scatter plots were used to compare the evaluations of All-Voiced users with PVQD ratings (Walden, 2022) across different competence levels.

Results

A total of 264 participants registered in the app, with daily registration patterns showing consistent activity. Most participants were aged 21–30 (49%), identified with “she/her” pronouns (88%), and were from the United States (51%). The majority were speech-language pathologists (78%), and 40% were beginners in terms of competence level. A total of 557 evaluations were collected across 112 voice samples. Analysis of the three most frequently evaluated voice samples revealed distinct patterns of consensus among evaluators with varying levels of expertise, hinting at trends that could have significant implications as more data is collected.

Conclusion

The All-Voiced app has been well received, particularly by speech-language pathologists, highlighting its promise as a tool for auditory-perceptual training. By collecting and analyzing large-scale data, the app holds potential to address limitations in the subjective nature of evaluations, enhance reliability, and support evidence-based practices in voice disorders management.

Objective

To determine the validity and diagnostic accuracy of the AVQI in Catalan and Spanish, to define a cut-off point and to assess the equivalence of the Catalan and Spanish versions in a bilingual population.

Methodology

The study was carried out with a sample of 214 participants with normal and dysphonic voices. All of them were native speakers of Catalan and Spanish and residents of Catalonia. AVQI scores were calculated. Four speech-language pathologists, native speakers of Catalan and Spanish, were in charge of scoring the voice samples based on the CAPE-V index. Inter-rater reliability, concurrent validity, diagnostic accuracy and cut-off points were assessed.

Results

AVQI and CAPE-V scores showed significant correlations (r = 0.724 and r = 0.737, in Catalan and Spanish, respectively). Areas under the curve (AUC) for the AVQI-C were 0.829 (95% CI: 0.775-0.882) and an AUC of 0.856 (95% CI: 0.807-0.905) for the AVQI-E. Mean AVQI scores in Catalan and Spanish were significantly different.

Conclusions

The Catalan and Spanish adaptations of the AVQI are valid for clinical use for the acoustic assessment of general voice quality in a bilingual context.

Background and objective

Coping are the cognitive and behavioral efforts that are developed to manage specific demands that are valued as situations that exceed or overflow the resources of a person, so the objective of this study is to identify coping styles in parents and caregivers of children with FLAP in the cities of Cuenca and Ambato, Ecuador.

Participants and materials

35 families with children diagnosed with different types of cleft lip and palate (CLP) from the cities of Cuenca and Ambato, Ecuador, participated. Ad hoc sociodemographic data and as a technique for the psychological measurement of coping styles: COPE-28 (according to the original by Carver, 1997).

Method

The participants completed questionnaires with the necessary help of a member of the research team.

Results

The study showed that children had more problems with language and in addition, parents, and caregivers of children with FLAP developed positive strategies such as acceptance, active coping, and religion in the face of their children's condition.

Conclusions

The involvement of a multidisciplinary team is considered important for the evaluation, early intervention, and a long-term follow-up of patients with FLAP, being essential to obtain promising results.
