The use of intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is supported and recommended in the neurosurgical and neurological assessment. Acute and long-term ICP measurement is desirable for providing an insight into the mechanism of the head injury and aiding post neurological disorders treatment. Two different embedded wireless microwave devices for monitoring of ICP have been designed and investigated for research and clinical diagnoses. This paper presents a comparative study of these devices, and describes their main features and measurement procedures.

This paper presents a practical tone reproduction approach to taking videos in high dynamic range scenes. The algorithm boosts the visibility of darker regions by attenuating the dynamic range of the low frequency plane and simultaneously enhances the image details. The successive frames share the same set of tone curves for the execution time reduction. The experimental results show that the algorithm can reach the real-time requirement with running on an embedded system.

With the increase of image resolution in video application, the memory bandwidth is a critical problem in video coding. An embedded compression algorithm is a technique that can compress the frame data when stored in memory. It is possible to reduce memory requirements. In this paper, we propose a lossless embedded compression algorithm with context-based error compensation to reduce the memory bandwidth requirement. Experimental results have shown at least 50% memory bandwidth reduction on average and the data reduction ratio of the proposed algorithm is up to 5% higher than previously proposed lossless embedded compression algorithm [2].

This paper proposes a novel stereoscopic 3D photographic technology with a stereo adapter attached to a monocular camera. From a camera's image, we select left and right ones with an adaptive threshold based on an amount of light entering the camera. Furthermore, we correct distortion of the left and right images by utilizing a new criterion derived from correctness of searching directions. Consequently, an automatic stereoscopic 3D photographing can be achieved.

This paper presents the implementation of a single FPGA intellectual property (IP) core for channel coding and interleaving used in Digital Video Broadcasting, second generation (DVB-T2). DVB-T2 is the extension of the television standard DVB-T, issued by the consortium DVB, and is devised for the broadcast transmission of digital terrestrial television. The higher offered bit rate, with respect to its predecessor DVB-T, makes it a suited system for carrying high definition TV (HDTV) signals on the terrestrial TV channel. In this paper we specifically target the version suitable for China Multimedia Mobile Broadcast (CMMB) standard that works on the 2,635 to 2,660 MHz frequency band to provide 25 video and 30 audio channels. The main contribution is the design and development of forward error correction (FEC) part for mobile multimedia broadcast system, its estimation of power dissipation and optimization. The FEC part includes Reed Solomon (RS) encoder and byte interleaver, low density parity check (LDPC) encoder and bit interleaver. All these sub-modules have been implemented and integrated for the target device Stratix III E (EP3SE50F780C4N). The design has been coded in verilog-HDL and synthesized using Quartus II 8.1 software tool. PowerPlay Power Analyzer tool provided by Altera with Quartus II software has been used for the estimation of power dissipation. Stratix III logic array block level programmable power technology and clock gating technique has been used for power optimization.

Using a 50-inch 3DTV and showing four kinds of content, we experimentally evaluated the relationship between TV viewers' emotional states and specific physiological and psychological indices. As statistical analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, multiple regression and principal component analysis were performed to estimate emotional state. Our results indicate that near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which represents one aspect of nervous system activities, is a potentially useful index for evaluating the emotional states of “stressed-relaxed” and “feeling of involvement-of boredom.” Moreover, LF/HF and HR are affected by complex emotional states in each subject for evaluating emotional states.

Commercialized electroencephalography (EEG) sensors are available that one could extract EEG data more cheaply and more easily. As commercialized EEG sensors can be used commonly, the services that could be provided using EEG and interactions that can be achieved by EEG are needed to be studied. In this paper, we show the feasibility of integrating EEG based services and interactions into consumer electronics using commercialized EEG sensors. We use support vector machine (SVM) classifiers to classify the user's status using EEG data gathered from objects of interest and noise. The results show that EEG gathered from commercialized EEG sensors can be used to classify the user's status.

In this paper, we present a memory-efficient and faster interleaver implementation technique for MIMO-OFDM communication systems on FPGA. The IEEE 802.16 standard is used as a reference for simulation, implementation, and analysis. A method for the interleaver design on FPGA and its memory utilization results are presented. Our design utilizes the minimum required on-chip memory for the interleaver implementation. Using the proposed interleaver design method, the data rates for MIMO-OFDM based communication systems are doubled for 2×2 MIMO systems without using the transmit diversity.

De-embedding techniques are frequently applied to signal integrity measurements to remove the unwanted effects of test fixture and thereby isolate the device under test (DUT) performance from the rest of the system. Conventionally, the transfer function (TF) of the channel to be de-embedded could be obtained independently without capturing its interaction to the DUT. However, as data rates increase and channels become more complex, the errors due to discontinuities at the channel to DUT boundary need to be given due consideration. This paper provides simulation and measurement examples to illustrate this effect and proposes a modified approach of generating the channel TF to compensate for those errors. The proposed approach effectively improves the accuracy of the de-embedded result. It can also be used as a validation scheme to correlate the de-embedding accuracy for a given application.
