Heart and respiration activity can be monitored remotely without any sensors attached to the subject, using the microwave Doppler radar principle. Implementation of this function using wireless LAN PC cards is described. Heart rate was successfully obtained with two minimally modified LAN cards each driven by a laptop computer, at a distance of 40 cm from the subject. This is the first demonstration of the use of a modified wireless terminal for remote sensing of vital signs.

The performance of radio frequency (RF) integrated circuits will strongly influence the versatility and portability of future wireless communication systems. Next-generation wireless technologies promise to deliver substantial improvements in size, weight, portability, power consumption and cost. They will also integrate many different functions including not only voice, but also video, data. In addition, with the advent of newer modulation schemes, such as EDGE as a gateway for 3G, major changes are expected to take place in the infrastructure. These new directions and infrastructure changes present a unique opportunity for academic research in several core technology areas. In particular, research in materials technology, system-level integration, modeling and computer-aided design (CAD) support have potential for making a serious impact and help enable the advent of this new wireless age. The paper discusses some of the challenges which must be surmounted in order to make this possible, and how the University of Illinois high-speed integrated circuits group is tackling them.

To characterize the performance of implantable biomedical devices, the interactions between the devices and the human body need to be properly assessed. Specifically, wireless telemetry systems for biomedical applications require a reliable communication link between the interior device and the exterior equipment for exchange of required data and information. This paper mainly deals with the implantable antennas embedded on the head telemeter. To generate parametric data, the electromagnetic scattering analysis is confined to the human head and dipole antennas.

A single-layer slotted waveguide array is proposed for 1m/sup 2/ plasma excitation at a microwave frequency (2.45 GHz). The electromagnetic field distribution over the aperture is measured with and without the quartz window attached. More accurate slot design will be conducted with the vacuum window, plasma chamber as well as the plasma taken into account.

A novel interpretation of physical optics (PO) is discussed and two mechanisms are identified as error factors, that is, (1) errors in diffraction coefficients and (2) fictitious penetrating rays (Oodo, M. et al., IEICE Trans. Electron., vol.E77-C, no.6, p.995-1004, 1994). Based upon these observations, new methods, named PO-AF and PTD-AF, are proposed which eliminate the fictitious penetrating rays from PO and PTD (physical theory of diffraction), respectively. The methods are based on decomposing PO currents into two currents which are the sets of equivalent currents in the aperture field integration method (AFIM) for reflection and shadow waves. The accuracy is confirmed numerically for corner reflectors and circular arc reflectors.

It is expected that the millimeter wave ad-hoc communication system will be used in places like cafeteria where room structure is complicated in addition to environments with comparatively few obstacles like conference rooms. Moreover, both communication between the personal computers on the desk and the communication system using an access point are considered as a variation of ad-hoc communication style. Since propagation path environments with millimeter-wave measurements have rarely been performed up to now, a conventional cafeteria in Japan was selected and measurement of the propagation characteristics in the 70 GHz band was executed.

Various low-cost, compact planar ultra-wideband (UWB), ultra-short pulse generators have been developed using step recovery and PIN diodes and MESFET. These include fixed and electronically tunable pulse generators. Fixed pulses ranging from 115 to 300 ps and tunable pulses Varying from 300 to 800 ps have been demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Good agreement between measured and calculated results is also achieved. These pulse generators find applications in UWB communications systems, both transmitter and receiver.

The paper outlines the modifications to a pattern reconfigurable antenna, with pattern reconfigurability over a shared bandwidth centered at 26 GHz, for IC fabrication and integration with RF MEMS switches. Several changes to the antenna structure that enable the incorporation of the switch geometry (including DC biasing networks) as well as the feeding mechanism are described. Performing these modifications allows a standard probe fed microstrip antenna to be successfully transformed into an IC compatible structure. Measured results from several of these modifications show very promising results.

Microwave ferrite phase shifters are primarily used in phased-array antenna systems to electronically steer the antenna beam. Lee and Strahan (1993) at Hughes Aircraft Company (now Raytheon) proposed a low-cost alternative solution to the current ferrite phase shifter designs, namely, a planar ferrite phase shifter based on printed-circuit technology that could theoretically produce circularly polarized waves in the ferrite region. The University of Hawaii (2003) modelled Raytheon's patented ferrite phase shifter using Ansoft's High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software, now capable of simulating the effect of an applied magnetic bias on a B-H nonlinear (ferrite) material. It was found that the horizontal electric-field component was much weaker than the vertical component, resulting in elliptical polarization rather than circular polarization. In an effort to transform the elliptically polarized wave into a circularly polarized wave, the geometry of the Raytheon phase shifter was modified to produce the nonplanar ferrite phase shifter proposed in this paper.

The eigenvalue of an asymmetric ridged waveguide is solved by operator theory and the propagation characteristics are analyzed. The dyadic Green's function in operator theory can be simplified to the scalar Green's function by the vector identical transform. There is no spurious mode in the solution. The method may also be used to calculate the characteristics of a resonant cavity with complex structure.
