We report the construction of frequency-stabilized high-power violet laser diodes for laser cooling and trapping experiment of ytterbium atoms. An external-cavity master laser of which frequency was stabilized to the ytterbium cooling transition at 398.9 nm was built and used to build a frequency-stabilized high-power slave laser (25 mW) by injection seeding technique.

In our experiments, we have successfully managed to produce optical waveguides in polished LiF crystals by using He/sup +/ ion beam irradiation. The beam was masked by a metal window, producing large irradiated stripes about 1 mm wide. Irradiation energy was chosen to be 1.1 MeV, since it allowed to produce 3 /spl mu/m thick waveguides with a parabolic colour centre creation and thus refractive index profile, which was very suitable for characterisation purposes.

Snridnranri Leliigh Universifq., Physics Depnminit and Center for Opticnl Technologies, Bethlehem, PA 18015 USA Nonlinear light sources based on periodically poled LiNbO, (PPLN) have gained a great deal of attention due to low thresholds, ease of operation and wide tuning range. In particular, the integrated optical versions of them, achieve, due to the confinement of light over long interaction lengths, very high conversion efficiencies. In order to optimize these integrated optical devices, both the Ti-profile and the domain structure have to he engineered precisely and effects of interaction have to be under control. To achieve this goal, we developed a novel characterization tool based on the luminescence of well characterized "designer defect"(e.g.: E?' ) that we use as probes for the local environment. We applied this concept to the two components of a PPLN waveguide device. ( I ) Characrerizaation ofdomain strirctiires nnd domain walls. It has been shown that the domain inversion process, most notably the coercive field, is strongly influenced by the presence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects. We investigated this effect by addressing the reverse question: How does domain inversion influence the intrinsic defects and dopants? Performing optical spectroscopy with high resolution (both spectrally and spatially) on trivalent rare earth ions (E?' and Yb'7 in congruent and stoichiometric LiNbO, we find drastic changes in the defect luminescence. Based on a detailed analysis of these changes, using earlier extensive studies of the defect system [ I ] ; we conclude that a defect reconfiguration takes place. Obviously, some o f the required charge compensators do not reposition themselves according to the reversed orientation of the spontaneous polarization vector at room temperature, while others do. Furthermore, we were able to detect a change in the intrinsic electric field experienced by the ion. On the other hand, we use the emission changes for non-destructive 3D-domain imaging (Fig. I ) in a home-built confocal fluorescence microscope. For this technique, we scan the excitation laser over the sample and measure the corresponding emission spectra. Evaluation of the moments of the spectra enables us to image domains with high contrast and high spatial resolution (<500nm). This method can be employed in situ, allowing precise control of the domain structures and time resolved investigations of domain inversion. For instance, we are studying the spatial extent and dynamics of domain walls. Especially, we focus-on the question at which stage the defect rearrangement occurs. "E. In this report, we experimentally demonstrate that mid-span optical phase conjugation(OPC) transmissions have large tolerance for the nonlinearity. We also compare the results with that in the transmission experiments using 200 km large-core SMFs and NDFs. We used a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as an optical phase conjugator and 200 km of standard SMFs as a transmission line. We found that mid-span OPC has large tolerance for optical nonlinearity in the transmission line.

In this paper, resonant frequency control for the whispering-gallery modes (WGM) is demonstrated by adjusting the temperature. We used single-mode optical fiber for the fabrication of the microsphere. The polymer coating of the fiber was stripped, and then the tip was melted by a focused CO/sub 2/ laser beam to form a sphere with a stem. The temperature of the microsphere was monitored by a thermometer. A tunable external-cavity diode laser (linewidth<300 kHz) was illuminated on the microsphere. The scattered light from the microsphere was collected by a microscope objective and imaged onto a pinhole so that the edge of the microsphere was selectively observed by an avalanche photodiode. We scanned the laser frequency to measure the scattering spectra over tens of GHz range at 780 nm.

The Kerr-lens mode locking lasers is known suitable for generation of few femtoseconds pulses. In this paper, we have developed full spatio-temporal numerical model of Kerr-lens mode-locked laser based on the wave equation for field envelope taking into account the space-temporal coupling. We present a detailed analysis of different regimes of oscillations of Ti:Sapphire laser. The stability region, quasilocking regimes caused by transverse mode beating, different kind of pulse train instabilities are demonstrated. The dispersion, cavity arm lengths, round-trip gain necessary for stable producing of shortest pulses are presented.

In this paper we give evidence that in free-running broad area semiconductor lasers (BALs) weak self-mode-locking of longitudinal modes already exists, leading to a fast regular intensity modulation of the output at the cavity round trip time. This fast dynamics deteriorates the output in terms of spectral width and temporal stability on the one hand, but on the other hand it could also offer an interesting possibility for optical pulse generation in these semiconductor laser devices. In fact, a significant improvement of the pulsed output has been achieved by additional injection of a picosecond pulse into the device.

We report on a passively mode-locked diode-pumped surface-emitting laser operating at a fundamental repetition rate of 10.014 GHz with a pulse duration of 490 fs. The average output power was 37.8 mW.
