A survey of Paraplegia News readers was conducted to examine several issues related to the use of bathroom fixtures by disabled people. Responses indicated a wide range of preferences or dislikes depending on the type of disabilities of readers. This survey led to the conclusion that bathroom fixtures are far from meeting the functional needs of a sizable portion of the population.

A new system is presented by means of which myocardial perfusion can be observed and assessed. This is achieved by parallelly recording the original transducer-generated rf-data as well as the video-data usually employed for the CRT-display. The rf-data are digitized and stored using a transient recorder. Processing them possibly leads to more detailed information about the myocardial perfusion. The comparability of the results of the video- and the rf-data analysis, respectively, is tested for the present with a mechanical circulation-model providing simulational features like capillar-models or the possibility of real-time flow-measurements in a heart-like, ventricular chamber-system. The quantification of wash-out-effects depending on the kind of sonicated contrast-medium is shown. Further results obtained with myocardial tissue mimicking phantoms and real hearts, especially using rf-data, will be presented.

This presentation addresses the use of automation and programmed positioning to provide a method of treatment for individuals with severe dysphagia. This approach deals with the use of seating and positioning systems for individuals with severe physical and medical conditions and describes adjustments to customized systems, commercial and homemade hardware, frame modifications, and use of tilt-in-space including lateral tilt.

A relaxed Version of Bregman's interval convex programming method is presented. It is shown that the relaxation procedure preserved the convergence properties of Bregman' algorithm for a suitable choice of the relaxation parameters.

This paper outlines the band, conducting mechanism and switching effect of Cu-TCNQ. Cu-TCNQ belongs to trap controlled band conduction, it's conductivity is greatly affected by the overlap of neighboring molecular frontier orbitals whose change triggers off the switching phenomena of Cu-TCNQ.

For the same aperture the focal zone of the electrohydraulic generator is much larger than the piezoelectric one. In a previous work we shown that the focal zone obtained with the same generator but where the inter space of the electrodes is filled with an electrolyte instead of water was 100 times lower and approximatively equal to the piezoelectric focal zone. So we think that the conventional electrohydraulic generator does not work well. Some measurements made using ombroscopy, film and triangulation confirm that the plasma formation takes place not always exactly at the first foci. After measuring the pressure in function of the off axis we conclude that the plasma formation is responsable of the large focal zone of the conventional electrohydraulic generator.

A method for high quality, low bit rate compression of ECG waveforms is presented. This method uses a hybrid approach for coding the waveform: higher frequency components are represented as straight-line segments by recursive partitioning (eliminating the requirement of prior knowledge of beat locations), and the remainder of the signal is low-pass filtered, decimated, and encoded using an Adaptive DPCM coder. The reconstructed waveform maintains clinical appearance, while reducing the average bit rate to less than 150 bits per second per channel, as evaluated on a subset of the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database.

The Biomedical Engineering Department at Mount Sinai Medical Hospital, New York, has the overall responsibility of managing patient care equipment and systems throughout the Medical Center. It is an absolute necessity to maintain detailed information on the history and maintenance of these equipment, from a regulatory standpoint as well as to ascertain good engineering practices. A Local Area Network (LAN) will enable the Biomedical Engineering Department to improve its efficiency and effectiveness to maintain equipment.

In this study, turbulent sounds caused by a controlled occlusion in the femoral artery of dogs were analyzed using the wavelet transform method to characterize these sounds. Results suggested that sound between 250 and 1000 Hz is associated with turbulence caused by stenosis.
