The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not a certain mouth wash, i.e. povidone-iodine, will reduce the incidence of bacteremia following tooth extraction. The sample was composed of twenty-six patients who were given gingival sulcus irrigation and rinsing prior to tooth extraction. Thirteen patients used povidone-iodine mouthwash and the other 13 patients with an identically matched placebo. Prior to irrigation and rinse, first blood sample is drawn and first gingival sulcus sample is taken. To complete the whole procedure, the patient rinsed with 10-20 ml of assigned coded mouthwash for 30 seconds and then repeated the rinsing after 2 minutes followed by 60 second irrigation with 10-20 ml of the same coded mouthwash, administered in the gingival sulcus and surrounding mucosa of the tooth to be extracted. A second gingival sulcus sample is taken then extraction is performed. A second blood sample is drawn within 3 minutes of extraction. Growth and reduction in bacteremia were determined before, during and after extraction procedure. Results indicated significant reduction in incidence of post-operative bacteremia with povidone-iodine as compared with placebo (P = .01558) and significant reduction in growth of gingival cultures with povidone iodine as compared with placebo (= .65337). Povidone-iodine mouthwash used as a rinse and gingival sulcus irrigant reduced the growth of gingival cultures and the incidence of post-operative bacteremia in more specimen compared to the placebo.

The present curricula in dentistry are biased in favor of cure and technical capability ... individualism rather than promotive, preventive and community orientation. The team "approach" and "total patient care" concepts must be given emphasis in these curricula. Dentistry, being a profession, should accentuate service, rather than materialism and profit. The Philippine situation demands than adoption of a "New Horizon in Health" which emphasized positive health as part of human development. The educational system, organized dentistry, the licensing board, the legislators, policy makers, oral health providers and research formulators will have important roles to perform in the successful implementation of this "new horizon in health" concept. "Primary Health Care" is another strategy adopted to realize the global goal of "Health for all by Year 2000". This is a positive approach for both individual and community oral health intervention programs.

It is highly recommended that a routine dental examination be a part of the dentist's service to his patients in his private office. And this should also be rendered annually by school dentists in both private and public schools. Emphasis should be done in counting the number of erupted permanent teeth in the oral cavity and the non-erupted ones as well. The latter is performed by thorough roentgenographic examination (panoramic). This procedure can establish the number, approximate size, location and the path of eruption of other permanent teeth, especially the late eruptors, the maxillary canines. Unnecessary surgical procedures and prolonged repositioning of displaced canines by orthodontic procedures should be avoided. Hence treatment and/or management of displaced teeth will be less expensive and the time spent for treatment is reduced.

The removal of tooth structure during preparation results in varying degrees of pulpal hyperemia. The ability of the pulpal tissue to respond either by recovery or degeneration depends in part upon the adequacy and fit of the provisional restoration. The response of the gingival tissue also depends on a large degree on the success of the temporary coverage. Provisional restorations are commonly given less attention and importance thereby biologic, mechanical, and esthetic considerations are not adequately met. Since a provisional restoration must be made or improvised during the same appointment in which the abutment teeth are prepared, costly chairside time most often leads to an unacceptable restoration. Failures such as color instability, color incompatibility, inappropriate anatomic contours, fractures, occlusal disharmony, changes in tooth position, gingival inflammation, and unhealthy periodontal conditions are usually encountered. A technique of fabricating an exacting provisional restoration with compliance to optimum quality is presented.

Sixty-three patients from the Dentistry Department of the Philippine General Hospital were included in a study to determine the symmetry of bilaterally occurring impacted mandibular third molars. Radiographic evaluation was done in terms of depth in bone and angulation. There does not seem to be any symmetry (27%) in comparing the third molar to the contralateral tooth.

A clinical study was performed to evaluate and compare plaque removal performance of the two commercially available products; the Colgate Precision Full Head Soft toothbrush and Reach Full Head soft toothbrush. Twenty high school students, male and female subjects participated, each refraining from toothbrushing for 24 hours. Plaque was scored according to the Personal Hygiene Performance (PHP) Index of Podshadley and Haley, as modified by Martens and Meskin. Following screening, the subjects were divided into two balanced groups on the basis of initial plaque scores. At Visit 1, each group having refrained from toothbrushing for 24 hours, was evaluated for plaque before brushing for 60 seconds with the assigned toothbrush, after which plaque was again scored. At Visit 2, one week later, the same procedure was followed. Subjects were instructed to resume their normal routine and return to the clinical site for Visit 2. On completion of the study, the data collected were subjected to statistical analysis which indicated that the Colgate Precision Full Head soft toothbrush removed significantly more plaque than Reach Full Head soft toothbrush.
