One of the crucial problems in the competitive sports of our days is the illicit use of drugs in increasing physical performance. The moral, professional, and legal responsibility of the physicians having a role in doping is quite explicit. Sports medicine can significantly contribute to the repression of doping; due to the diverging interests, however, it will not be able to solve it alone. The paper reviews the development and background of doping and, relying on the list issued by the International Olympic Committee, on banned drugs discusses the intended and adverse effects of the drug classes used for doping. Cases of doping detected at the Seoul Olympic Games are presented and a brief survey is given of the means that should be used for check-up.

Anteovin biphasic contraceptive tablet has been used in adolescent and middle-aged women for contraception. Attempts were made with the tablet for the treatment of climacteric complaints. The tablet was found to be effective in both fields. References dealing with borderline cases and present interest in the question have been discussed. The author points out the importance of further analyses.

Fenofibrate subdoses were applied as an adjuvant therapy in 64 women for improving lipid metabolism. The women took different oral contraceptives mainly with progestin dominance and the prevention of the unfavourable metabolic effects with drug therapy was indicated for maintaining safe contraception which was absolutely necessary for health and other reasons. Protective Lipanthyl therapy seemed to be very useful for this purpose.

Recent changes in diabetic diet have been reviewed with special regard to the role of obesity, eating habits, carbohydrate content, and the ratio of simple and complex carbohydrates in meals, glycaemic index and fibre content of diet. The lack of standard conditions for comparing the results of different examinations as well as the need for the decisive results of long-term studies have been pointed out. The recommended carbohydrate content of diabetic diet is 60%, fat content 30-35%. The previous complete elimination of simple naturally occurring carbohydrates from the diet is not recommended anymore, these may be consumed in a wider field. The observance of glycaemic index and the use of high-fibre diet are of high importance--even if not primary--especially in type II diabetic patient. In general it is recommended to maintain/obtain an ideal body weight and to introduce a simple diet--planned not only for diabetics.

The clinical features of senile hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism differ from the general characteristics of these conditions. This may be explained primarily by the changed response of peripheral tissues to thyroid hormones. Because of the atypical clinical symptoms the recognition of these conditions meets difficulties and, in general, occurs late. Therapy raises further special questions considering primarily cardiac complications and other accompanying diseases (for instance arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus.). The authors analyse data of 171 hypothyroid and 219 hyperthyroid patients as a function of age, primary disease, and the most often occurring impulse generation, impulse conduction disorders.

Seventy two women were recently controlled who changed to Tri-Regol. The women had used other oral contraceptive previously which they had not tolerated well. The aim of the change to Tri-Regol was successful in 77.7% partly successful in 12.5%, and unsuccessful in 9.8% of the cases. According to the author's opinion Tri-Regol is of high value in improving the tolerance of oral contraception in justified cases. In spite of the good results the change from Tri-Regol to tablets of higher hormone contents may also be justified in individual cases. The importance of the use of low-dose, triphasic tablets when starting oral contraception for lowering the risk of complications and side-effects has been emphasized as a currently generally recommended method.

Iron deficiency is very common throughout the world. It is by far the most common cause of anemia, but even states of storage iron depletion and tissue iron deficiencies need iron replacement therapy. The effectivity of the therapy depends on the daily dose administered and on the duration of the therapy. Because of an optimal absorption and minimal side-effects slow-release oral iron preparations seem to solve this very important problem.

Rabenid (sulfinpyrazone) was used in 95 patients suffering from different diseases and treated at the departments could be demonstrated in association with or as a primary cause of the disease. Serum uric acid level was measured as an objective parameter. In response to Rabenid a drastic fall of this value could be observed. The drug influences favourably the serum cholesterol and triglyceride values as well. In patients exposed to the risk of thrombosis, new or recurrent thrombosis did not develop during the observation period and Rabenid was, in general, well tolerated by all patients. Attention has been called to the close correlation between hyperuricaemia, obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertensions, and hyperlipaemia and the therapeutic and prophylactic value of the examined drug has been emphasized from this respect.

Norcuron has been used for intubation and short-term relaxation in 21 cases and for maintaining neuromuscular blockade during major operations of 48 patients suffering from severe clinical conditions. The drug assured in all cases relaxation for the required period and longer operations could also be performed, if required, with the repetition of doses. According to the observations Norcuron proved to be a muscle relaxant of medium duration of action which may be combined with drugs commonly used for premedication, as well as with narcotics introducing and maintaining anaesthesia. The special advantage of the drug is that virtually it does not influence the circulatory parameters and its action may be reliably antagonized.

Cosilat is the sole Hungarian therapeutic food preparation which may be successfully used in several clinical conditions due to it's hydrolyzed protein and MCT fat content and the absence of lactose. In infancy it may be given orally, in older children in form of tube feeding. The authors have reported on their observations in healthy and diseased children. The required weight gain could be obtained with Cosilat in all examined groups. Side-effects were not observed. They recommend the use of the formula for the treatment of premature infants and in postoperative and malabsorption cases as well. All clinical conditions in which the use of Cosilat may be justified because of it's composition are described in the report.
