The conjunctival bacterium flora was examined during the preoperative and postoperative treatment of 200 patients who underwent intraocular surgery. Brulamycin eye drops (15 mg tobramycinum in 5 ml solution) were given to 100 patients and Oculogutta neomycin (50 mg neomycinum sulfuricum in 100 ml solution) to 100 patients. The effectivity, objective and subjective side-effects of the two drugs, and resistance to the drugs were examined. On the basis of comparative data and the observations of the authors, Brulamycin eye drops are recommended for the premedication of intraocular surgery.

The 20 mg piroxicam (Hotemin) capsule and suppository were efficacious and tolerable according to data of literature and own clinical observations in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, knee and hip arthrosis, as well as ischialgia. The increase in the daily dose is not accompanied by the more frequent development or aggravation of the adverse effects. Both preparations may be used as the first choice in the mentioned diseases and, moreover according to data of references, in case of other rheumatological diseases as well.

In order to assess the effects of Loderix (setastine) on the EEG ten healthy male volunteers were investigated in double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over arrangement. In addition to the test compound (Loderix) volunteers were treated with vehicle and with two referent drugs (terfenadine, Teldane, and chloropyramine HCl, Suprastin) possessing sedative effects of very different degrees. The different effects of the referent drugs on the central nervous system (CNS) were precisely indicated by the posterior alpha/theta ratio in the EEG. This marker parameter was affected by Loderix in the same direction as by Teldane and in the opposite direction as compared to Suprastin. In addition, Loderix increased the beta frequency range in the median areas of both hemispheres, moreover, it increased the total EEG power. The latter changes raise the question if Loderix has an "own" action on the EEG. (The observed "own" effect could not even be brought into connection with decrease of the vigilance level). The results strengthen the view that the action of Loderix on the EEG is similar to that of induced by Teldane, a drug very favourable in respect of the sedative side effects. Moreover, the drug did not affect the EEG power spectra in a direction that referred to sedative action. The spectral parameters in the "pharmaco" EEG recordings seem to be useful in the objective definition of the central (psychotropic) side-effects of drugs. This is a methodical achievement of the present study.

Sodium cromoglycate is a widely used drug for the prevention of allergic diseases, especially in bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. It inhibits mastocyte degranulation and has a direct effect on inflammatory cells and the bronchial obstructive reflex. The drug prevents the development of bronchial constriction caused by various factors and among others the allergen-induced late allergic reaction as well. Because of its few side-effects it may also be successfully used in childhood bronchial asthma.

Usefulness and prophylactic effect of Taleum (sodium cromoglycate) inhalation aerosol (EGIS Pharmaceutical Works) were examined in 34 children aged 8 to 14 years, who suffered from extrinsic bronchial asthma. The changes in clinical symptoms and respiratory function parameters were compared to the result of therapy with Intal powder inhaled with the aid of a spinhaler. The children learned the inhalation of Taleum spray easily. The use of this prophylactic agent was more simple as compared to the powder capsule. Considering all examined parameters, the effectivity of Taleum proved to be similar to that of Intal capsule used as a reference drug.

Problems of theoretical and practical importance of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug therapies have been reviewed on the basis of data of references. Recent observations, which may explain the differences in the clinical effectiveness and toxicity of the different products, have been emphasized. Attention has been called to the great individual variations in the patients' responses and the development of unwanted effects. The risks of the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in elderly have been pointed out. The author stresses the importance of a proper drug selection and calls attention to the fact that the continuous use of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents is not necessary in a great number of cases.

Nitromint aerosol has been used for controlling 464 attacks of 116 angina pectoris patients in emergency cases. The anti-anginous effect of the sublingual spray developed very rapidly and only caused mild-moderate unwanted effects, which commonly accompany the administration of nitroglycerin. In a comparison of the spray with the sublingual tablet, the majority of the patients found the aerosol more favourable. In addition to its anti-anginous action, the drug is an absolutely necessary means in emergency cases such as cardiac asthma and left ventricular failure.

Comparative examinations were performed with ketoconazole (Nizoral) 1% cream and clotrimazole (Canesten) 2% ointment in 41 patients suffering from superficial dermatomycosis. Twenty-one patients were treated with ketoconazole, twenty patients, with clotrimazole twice daily, for a maximum 4 weeks. The results of the clinical and mycological examinations showed no significant differences when comparing the two groups treated with the different products. Trichophyton rubrum was the most frequently isolated strain in both groups. Side-effect occurred in two of the patients treated with ketoconazole cream (erythema, burning sensation) which did not require the discontinuation of therapy. In the clotrimazole-treated group the therapy had to be discontinued in 3 patients because of dryness of skin, burning sensation, and aggravation of inflammatory symptoms.

The effect of Betadine solution and cream was examined in the treatment of burn patients (23 documented and about 200 non-documented) during the first six months of 1991. The laboratory examinations did not reveal changes in T3, T4, TSH values. Renal failure due to iodine absorption was not observed. Hypersensitivity to the agent was not recorded. Healing of superficial and deep second-degree burns was especially rapid in some cases. In cases of third-degree burns the wounds remained "dry" until the operation. Favourable effect was also observed in the pretreatment of the donor skin areas. The authors found Betadine to be definitely advantageous in the treatment of burn patients.

The results of Betadine treatment obtained in the course of a one-year period proved the usefulness of the bacteriostatic and bactericidal product as a disinfectant of the skin and mucosa in immuno-deficiency diseases, in our cases in AIDS (but supposedly in other similar diseases as well). In these diseases this new therapeutic means does supply a need. The solution was successfully used in patients in whom superficial decontamination is of high importance and whose cutaneous and mucosal infections had raised therapeutic problems for years. Side-effects were not observed. The product could be easily applied. If the germ count of the atrophying pathogen is not very high and the lesion is due supposedly to mixed infection, the product will be effective even in monotherapy. Similarly, in mild mycotic infections systemic therapy could be avoided. In cases of purulent alterations the solution is successfully applied as an adjuvant to antibacterial treatment and its continuous use prevents early recurrence. The long-term use of the product did not cause side-effects, irritation of the skin or the mucosa.
