We present an enzyme immunoassay for the determination of thyroid membrane bound antibodies. This assay can help to differentiate autoimmune and non-autoimmune thyroid diseases. We used 101 sera and compared our results with these of commercial assay kits. In this form we estimate with our test more than one thyroid antibody, but we found a good correlation especially to the microsomal antibody. We can give the results as an index at a constant serum dilution or in titers.

We examined in pigs after PC feeding the activities of the succinate dehydrogenase and the isocitrate dehydrogenase in the mitochondria of the liver, the fatty acid pattern of the liver, and the cell metabolism measured on the basis of selected parameters of thrombocytes and erythrocytes. A high PC proportion in the feed caused changes of the investigated parameters, in particular changes in the protein metabolism and the lipid pattern.

An inhibitor against blood clotting factor IX was observed as a very rare finding in case of an eight year old boy suffering from haemophilia B. By reason of a haemarthros a replacement therapy was successful done using FEIBA (Factor Eight Inhibitor Bypassing Activity). The haemostatic characterization of the inhibitor and its influence by therapy will be presented.

A method for the determination of catecholamines and their metabolites in the urine was established. The specimens were previously cleaned by ion exchangers and the components were separated by a 'reversed phase' ionic pair chromatography, determined by an electrochemical 'wall-jet'-detector. This method was applied in order to find a diagnostic marker in case of neuroblastoma diseases. In 85 per cent of the patients (n = 13) we stated an increased ejection of dopamine.

It is desirable to know the factors determining the large interindividual and interindividual variation of urinary enzyme excretion rates among normal individuals to allow a better understanding of pathological states. The following factors seems to play a significant role in influencing total enzyme efflux rates: urinary flow, age, sex, biorhythms, genetic factors, hormonal situation (including pregnancy), nutrition, and physical activity.

The degree of apo E sialylation in VLDL from serum of diabetics and controls was determined by densitometric scanning of the pherograms after isoelectric focusing of the VLDL proteins including treatment with neuraminidase. The distribution pattern of sialylation within the groups of patients and controls followed a Gaussian type. A significantly elevated level of sialylated apo E could be demonstrated in IDDM and NIDDM as compared to the controls. No correlation was found between the apo E phenotype and the diabetic state. From the correlation analysis including the parameters degree of sialylation, age, duration of diabetic state, and blood glucose pattern no significant results were obtained except a significant but only week correlation (r less than 0.3) between sialylation, age, and blood glucose in IDDM patients. Possible consequences of the elevated apo E sialylation in diabetes mellitus are discussed.
