ABSTRACT I n this study we evaluated the secondary metabolites, total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid contents (TFC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of salep orchids, Anacamptis morio , Anacamptis pyramidalis , Neotinea tridentata , Ophrys mammosa , Ophrys lutea , and Ophrys speculum . DPPH free radical scavenging assay was used to determine the antioxidant activities of n -hexane, chloroform, methanol and water extracts of the plants. The antimicrobial activities were also determined by the Broth micro-dilution method. The extracts were studied for antimicrobial activity by the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) approach against seven clinical pathogenic bacteria and two fungi. Phytochemical screening revealed that the presences of coumarins, flavonoids, flavanones, cardiac glycosides, proteins and quinones. The extracts had variable TPC and TFC, with values of 4.46 ± 0.19–45.83 ± 1.86 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight and 0.67 ± 0.04–8.64 ± 0.37 mg quercetin equivalent/g dry weight respectively. O. speculum had the highest (35.12%) antioxidant activity, followed by O. mammosa (33.17%). Chloroform extracts of all species showed significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. These bioactivities of the chloroform extracts were positively associated with the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. The MIC concentrations ranged from 0.156–20 mg/mL. The present investigation shows that the extracts of these species, especially chloroform extracts, could be used as potential antioxidant and antimicrobial sources.

A series of symmetric bis-benzoxazole derivatives were synthesized using one-pot cyclisation reaction between 4-fluoro substituted 2-aminophenol and suitable carboxylic acids. Synthesized compounds’ anticancer activities were tested by using MTT assay on human prostate (DU145) and breast (MCF7) cancer cells. Screening results revealed that all compounds possessed a high level anti-cancer potential by significantly decreasing the cell proliferation in prostate and breast cancer cell lines. Our compounds exerted their anti-proliferative effects in a dose and time dependent manner. Our results suggest that they can be highly potent since they were biologically active even at low concentration ranges. Our study presents a series of new bis-benzoxazole based compounds with potential therapeutic effects against tumor cells. Therefore, characterization of new generation bis-benzoxazole derivatives will have a significant contribution on the development of new era anti-cancer drug candidates.

The enhancement studies of antibacterial activity of antibotics is an important issue because of the increasing in multiple antibiotic resistant pathojen microorganisms. In this study, the synergistic effects of Punica granatum L. acetone fruit peel extract and antibiotics (Ampicillin-Sulbactam and Amoxicillin trihydrate) combinations were investigated. Disk diffusion method was used for determination of the synergistic effect. Pomegranate acetone fruit peel extract and Amoxicillin trihydrate combination showed synergistic effect against Escherichia coli, Stapylococcus aureus, Stapylococcus epidermidis, Salmonella typhimurium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis. Besides, the combination of P. granatum acetone fruit peel extract and Ampicillin-Sulbactam exhibited synergistic effect against S. epidermidis, E. faecalis, and B. subtilis. According to the results of this study, Punica granatum acetone fruit peel extract highly improved the antibacterial efficacy of Amoxicillin trihydrate and Ampicillin-Sulbactam.

In this study, responses of seedling growth of three flax cultivars to in vitro competition and stress were investigated. The findings showed that encouraged competition of seedlings by decreasing the distances among seeds sown per Magenta vessel elevated chlorophyll contents (chl. a, b and total chl.), seedling and root lengths significantly up to a treshold from where stress initiated and significant decreases in all parameters were observed. It is thought that competition among in vitro-grown seedlings which can be source of explants may be used to increase the success of tissue culture studies.

Azadirachtin (AZA), a plant allelochemical, is used against pest organisms and Lepidopteran species are quite sensitive to this substance. In this study, the developmental effects of AZA on model insect and greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae via force feeding method were investigated. To investigate the effects of different doses of pure AZA (0.2 5 μg/larva), seventh instar larvae were fed by a force feeding method. The results showed that all doses of AZA caused lethal and sublethal effects on the biological parameters of G. mellonella. Larval developmental time increased while that of pupa did not change depending on the increasing doses of AZA. In addition, adult longevity, and weights of pupae and adults decreased at all AZA doses in a dose-dependent manner. In conclusion, this study, using G. mellonella as a model organism, showed that AZA has insecticidal activity and causes adverse effects on the life history traits of Lepidopteran pest insects.

Algae (unicellular microalgae) are living things that are able to perform microscopic photosynthesis and live on the land and in the sea. They are evaluated to have started life and conveyed it to the land; and they are stated to have existed for 5 billion years by scientists. It is known that about 30,000 types of algae, estimated to exist in a range from 200,000 to 2-3 million types in nature, have been recorded so far; and that merely a few types of them have been able to be commercialized. Algae have highly rich carbohydrate, protein and especially oil acid content. Algae, rich in terms of nutritious value, are the most crucial source of nutrients, vitamins and trace elements for living things in water. They also supply necessary basic pigmentation development for fish and other sea creatures. The fact that aquatic products in seas and fresh waters are caught in extreme amounts has led to the increase in environmental problems and inland water pollution and decrease in the number of organisms living in these environments. Therefore, cultivation activities of algae growing have gained speed. In the plants where algae cultivation is carried out, algae culture units are the most important and inevitable step in larva feeding. Algae, one of the most significant food sources of marine life, are used as energy, food, agriculture, cosmetics, medicine and pharmacy, nutrients and mineral source. Also, it is known that they are used in numerous fields of industry such as forage, fertilizer, waste treatment, and dentistry, alcohol, pharmaceutical, paper, paint, rubber, textile, industry, and in their usage of solid and liquid oils and hydrocarbons and aquaculture and waste water treatment. The aim of this study is to emphasize usage of algae, one of the most important sources of marine life, and draw attention to the importance of algae culture and related industry.
