The introduction describes violence on cultural heritage workers and the destruction of cultural heritage in conflict and then pivots attention to the “more insidious loss of knowledge” attributable to improper recording, retention, and publication of data by archaeologists as they conduct research, along with the loss of sites accompanying global development (3). Despite the comparison, it is difficult to accept executions of cultural heritage practitioners and a lack of archaeological publications as equivalent. The aim of the book is to provide theories and methodologies for the use of digital tools in practicing digital preservation and “cyber-archaeology,” defined as a “digital process in which a virtual world is generated through interactions and interconnections” (4), with the intention of not only implementing proper technique but also maximizing the ability of these tools to engage with local communities (10). The 11 chapters are arranged in three sections ordered to provide a workflow akin to the practice expected: “Data Collection,” “Data Analysis and Presentation,” and “Data Curation and Dissemination.” It is worth considering how the organization of the book’s three sections aligns with the stated objectives of the book and the workflows described in the provided case studies.Opening the “Data Collection” section is a chapter by Wendrich seeking to contextualize the destruction of heritage occurring in evolving landscapes and the increased ease of public engagement with affected communities made possible through digital practices (ch. 1). Guillem and Lercari follow with an effort to set the theoretical framework for the cases and methodologies presented (ch. 2). Notably, Guillem and Lercari use the second chapter to confront the attitudes treating these new approaches as “digital solutionism” (26), and they further attempt to fit answers to several other important questions that deserve more space in a larger forum. The chapter draws parallels with other preservation workflows in practice today, while putting the onus on archaeologists to begin implementi

The Ta tablets are a series of Linear B documents from the Palace of Nestor at Pylos that inventory vessels, fire implements, slaughtering paraphernalia, and furniture. This article argues that all the equipment documented on the Ta tablets pertains to a single large-scale ritual cattle sacrifice and was not equipment for the banquet that would have followed the sacrifice. The argument is rooted in a reanalysis of the tables listed on the Ta tablets that concludes that they were used for the slaughter and butchery of sacrificial cattle. Discussion proceeds from there to the sacrificial ritual use of the other items listed on the Ta tablets. Finally, speculative conclusions are drawn about the political ceremony that employed these objects and a possible smaller event taking place within the larger ceremony. This study draws on a wide range of sources, including other materials found in the same archival room, relevant iconography, archaeological comparanda, experimental archaeology, and a study of comparative butchery techniques.1

In recent decades, studies of Roman domestic space have proliferated. The result is a rich but impenetrable picture, with scholars often favoring the use of ancient sources on one hand and finds from excavated houses or material remains on the other. Studies have emphasized how light can be approached to investigate space and its social meaning. At the same time, in the field of digital technologies applied to archaeological investigation, light simulation and analysis have proven to be advantageous tools. Based on the concept of light as a powerful social agent, this study presents new insights into social and spatial behavior in the Roman house through simulation of natural and artificial light on a digital 3D reconstruction of the House of the Greek Epigrams (V.1.18) in Pompeii.1

Architecture in Ancient Central Italy takes studies of individual elements and sites as a starting point to reconstruct amuch larger picture of architecture in western central Italy as an industry, and to position the result in space (in the Mediterranean world and beyond) and time (from the second millennium bc to Late Antiquity). This volume demonstrates that buildings in pre-Roman Italy have close connections with Bronze Age and Roman architecture, with practices in local and distant societies, and with the natural world and the cosmos. It also argues that buildings serve as windows into the minds and lives of those who made and used them, revealing the concerns and character of communities in early Etruria, Rome, and Latium. Architecture consequently emerges as a valuable historical source, and moreover a part of life that shaped society as much as reflected it.
