In this article we present the results of an investigation developed around a group of four sculptural marble fragments stored in the Archaeological Museum and in the Museum of Fine Arts of Cordoba but that be part of the same sculpture. The investigation was focused on one hand on the photogrammetric digitalization, virtual restauration and assembly of the fragments and on the other on the stylistic analysis, sculptural technique and hypothetical identification of the sculpture.

During 1996-1997 several rescue excavations resulted in the discovery of the main components of a Punic fish-salting facility located in the area of Pinar Hondo in the current city of El Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz, Spain). The results of the excavations were subsequently released in some preliminary reports that only featured a partial picture of the characteristics of the main structures and contexts of Puerto-19. The study of the items recovered (pottery, fishing gear, faunal remains, etc.) through 2008-2010 has made possible to review the first hypotheses and develop a new scheme of the evolution of the rural site, and as well to complete a deeper characterization of the material assemblages linked to the successive stratigraphic phases. Throughout three main stages, the settlement evolved from the second half of the 6th century until the last decades of the 3rd century BCE from a fish-processing facility (Building A) to a multifunctional structure (Building B), probably abandoned before the Roman conquest of the area during the Second Punic War.

EnglishDuring the archaeological fieldwork campaigns of 2003- 2006, in the so-called “Monte Castrelo” of Pelou (Grandas de Salime, Asturias), a Roman inscription was found among other surprising findings. It was initially considered a tabula censualis. The inscription is a list of about fifty individuals written down on a slate, a very common material in the western part of Asturias. Despite its significance, it still has not received a monographic study, so its official nature has been generally admitted as a part of provincial census. After the recent comments and observations made by Lopez Barja on this point, who defends that a census function is innapropriate in this case, we can approach the issue through landscape perspectives and a comparative method with other informal lists, which can forge new paths for a better understanding of this document.

We present the historical results derived from the first phase of research on this important site, conducted exclusively with non-invasive methods. The data recovered from pedestrian and geophysical prospecting have allowed us to verify the urban condition of the settlement, attested not only by its size, but also by its structural complexity and the nature of the pottery collected, which suggest specialized economic activities and the coexistence of different social sectors. The abandonment of the settlement around 200 BCE confirms the profound impact of the Roman conquest on the settlement patterns of the northern Iberian world.

Following the archaeological work done in Caceres Viejo (Casas de Millan, Caceres), we present the results and interpretations of a human occupation dated from the first half of the first century BC. Although the knowledge about this archaeological site is still limited, the vestiges of the occupation, the building architecture and the artifacts predict that it could have played a relevant role in the interactions between the two roman political groups and between romans and allies. Once classified as an Iron Age castro, until now we only testified a Late-Republican Roman occupation, undeniably verified by the presence of typical artifact from this period. Nevertheless, common ware not only prevail, but also reflect contacts and influences with communities from the Meseta. Other artifacts also allow consider a military presence in this hill which could show a possible juxtaposed relationship with the military camp of Caceres el Viejo.

Identity in the ancient world is a debatable matter but the funerary world is an undeniably excellent point of reference. The social complexity of death can be evaluated by studying an unusual funerary monument found in the necropolises of Cadiz. The object of study for this paper includes the monument itself, its location and context, and the associated inscription, reinforcing the possible connection between identity and certain funerary customs. These rituals may be linked to particular funerary topographies and cultures. The archaeological context, the use of local materials, the imitation marble covering, the possibility of colorant remains or the size and visibility of the piece make this find unique within Cadiz and the Iberian Peninsula more generally. This paper’s main objective is thus to identify how certain ethnicities/identities became dominant within this particular funerary world. Our discussion revives reflections on the presence of settlers, indigenous or foreign, in ancient Gades.

EnglishThis paper deals with the long-lasting debate about the orientation of Roman cities by combining two procedures: an analysis of a statistically significant sample of orientations of Roman settlements in the Iberian Peninsula and the results of the experimentation and re-construction of Roman surveying instruments. Specifically, the study seeks to reinforce, or reject, the hypothesis of the use of the varatio, and its possible mode of execution: a method based on the application of right-angled triangles with legs in proportion of integer numbers. The meridian line is also postulated as the generating line for each new project, including a possible procedure for obtaining it from the indications given by Vitruvius (De Architectura VI, I). The results derived from the statistical analysis show that orientations seem not to be randomly distributed but they tend to cluster around particular directions that agree with the expected values in case this geometrical technique was commonly applied.
