The long-term settlements in organic clay can create a kind of an engineering challenge that appear in most facilities design and construction in areas with deep deposits of soft clay. Peat ground is widely distributed throughout the southern part of Iraq. Peat contains a large amount of organic matter and has a very high natural water content. Three soil samples were collected from depths of 1.5 m, 2.5 m, and 3.5 m, below the soil surface in Halfaya oilfield, which lies east of Missan governorate southern Iraq. A series of tests were conducted in a large-scale model using a plate footing and considering three different percent of organic content. The percent of secondary settlement found is dependent on the stress level applied. A large fraction of the total settlement may be due to secondary compression. The assumption of a constant coefficient of secondary compression, Cα, may not be valid for a long-term settlement of peats. Laboratory data indicate that Cα generally increases with time. Thus, settlement predictions using constant Cα may underestimate field settlement.

The process of construction can be defined as an extensive system that builds the accommodations for people to settle in, as well as the construction of facilities that keep up the development process. Some of the main steps that the process would cover are the extracting and benefiting raw materials, manufacture of building materials and elements, the construction of the project run from viability to inspection, and the regulation and running process of the sites. The most profound challenges that many cities n Iraq share illustrate the consequences of urban growth. Thus, this study seeks to examine the aspects of sustainability that influence the decisions for the process of building up green building projects. A total number of fourty respondents have been requested to evaluate nine elements of building sustainability: life cycle evaluations, energy conservation and renewable energies, water conservation, environmentally friendly construction supplies and standards, depletion of waste materials, alleviation of toxic materials, adequate indoor ventilation, smart innovation, and sustainability in the development of the building process and ecologically friendly construction projects. The findings show that the respondents preferred the use of elements that could give better sustainability in the process of construction building to ensure a healthier and better quality of life. This preference is established from the concept of green building technology. The most chosen aspect for this concept is the efficiency of energy and the use of renewable energy, followed by the alleviation of toxic materials, adequate indoor ventilation, and water conservation.

Nowadays, due to development of hydraulic structures such as dams, the durability issue of concrete is very important parameter of hydraulic structures. Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is new technology gaining popularity in the recent years due to its low cost, rapid construction, and using opportunity of by-products. RCC is widely used in the world for dams construction. The key issue in this regard is the concrete resistance against erosion which is related to water/ cement ratio and the crystalline formation of the particles in concrete. The experimental program of this study was based on preparing specimens of three mixes of RCC with different water/ cementitious ratio and one mix of conventional concrete. An instrument was manufactured for exposing the specimens to different water pressure, different types of water, different angles of projections and different time intervals. The total erosion was measured, studied and analyzed. It was found that the studied parameters were actively affecting the erosion value of the roller compacted concrete.

This paper suggests and validates a simplified analytical method for the analysis of hybrid steel and FRP reinforced concrete beams. The proposed method determines the flexural strength of the concrete beams based on strain compatibility and force equilibrium of the beam section under pure bending moment. The suggested method was validated against different experimental test results with very reasonable agreement. Afterward, the validated method was used to conduct parametric study to investigate the effect of two important parameters on the response and failure modes of hybrid steel and FRP RC beams. The proposed method can be implemented in the analysis and design of hybrid reinforced concrete beams with different reinforcement materials.

The effect of using Portland cement, nano silica (NS) and /or micro silica on the mechanical and physical properties of concretes containing fine aggregate only is investigated. Two groups divided into five series each have been designed and tested. The first group was containing the nano-silica only, while the second group contained different ratios of nano silica and a constant content of 8 % of silica fume (SF) (by weight) as partial replacement of cement. Water cementations ratio (w/c) of all mixtures was constant and equal to 0.22. The cement content in all series was 800 kg/m3. Commercially available nano silica (NS) was used in the mixture for the partial substitution of cement at ratios of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2 and 3% by weight. It was found that the addition of nano –silica is significantly enhance compressive, tensile and modulus of elasticity of concrete. From the test results obtained it has been noted that the mix containing 2 % possess significantly improved mechanical properties, furthermore, the group samples of concrete containing binary cementations nano-silica and silica fume showed better results than concrete containing nano silica only.

The fatigue life of Asphalt concrete pavement consists of two components, namely the resistance to fracture and crack, and the ability to heal the micro cracks. Both processes changes with temperature and time. Such processes exhibit the sustainability potential of asphalt concrete pavement. Repeated traffic loading and environmental impact causes deterioration in asphalt concrete pavement mixes and exhibit micro cracking and decreases its stiffness. However, due to the crack healing phenomena effect, asphalt mixes can demonstrate strength recovery and prolongs the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures. Many studies have been conducted to characterize the asphalt healing and its mechanisms. The approach to study this potential requires implementation of proper additives to the asphalt cement which can improve the self healing property of asphalt concrete and reserve the quality of the pavement. The aim of this work is to thoroughly understand the cracking and healing mechanisms and to define appropriate laboratory tests and type of additives which can increase the healing potential and can be used for a reliable performance-related selection and characterization of the asphalt binders, and the suitable asphalt concrete mixture based on the traffic loading and the environment issues. It was felt that it is essential to evaluate whether it is possible to achieve accelerated healing in asphalt mixtures within laboratory conditions, which could represent the actual behavior in the field. It was concluded that the process of healing is a sustainable measure and can be used to balance the damage process. The influence of several additives on the microcrack healing concept was discussed. The amount and rate of healing of asphalt cement which depend on several properties such as; its healing potential, stiffness, and surface free energy was also analized.

Housing is one of the important necessities for people. It comes after food and drink according to Maslow’s pyramid of human needs. It also influences countries’ social cohesion, stability and development and at the same time is affected by their general conditions. Iraq has a housing sector crisis. The county experiences a large housing shortage. The Iraqi National Housing Policy identifies critical challenges in seven housing-related fields: housing production, land management, housing finance, infrastructure, construction materials, housing stock status and slums. This paper aims to present a better understanding of these housing challenges as a first step to the development of appropriate solutions. It presents a critical investigation of the housing sector’s issues through exploring a wide range of literature to build a framework that critically evaluates and identifies the problems. The paper also quantifies the current housing shortage at around 1 million dwellings. Based on the extrapolation of trends towards 2030, it is estimated that Iraq has to build around 230000 dwellings annually to satisfy future demand. Results confirm the importance of the issues identified in the National Housing Policy, which gives it more validity. The paper concludes by proposing a series of measures to address Iraq’s housing challenges.
